I HATE soulstorm
I need to blow of some steam!
I almost threw my controller through my TV just now. Playing the 'loading crane' is absolute horror! Since when is Abe an action hero! The one that designed this level completely ruined Oddworld for me. I HATE IT. Double jump? To go from hanging position to a platform right above you. Total nonsense. An achievement for throwing grenades like hell while dodging all the time? With clunky controls? I HATE IT. Just used up your Shrykull power a tad too early? Maybe you want to replay the entire level. I HATE IT. Abe used to outwit his enemies. But what happened to stealth? Hiding in a locker? Yeah right. Stupid crafting system takes all the flow out of the game, especially when the give a sh*tload of items AFTER a save point. Let's craft it a hundred times again. I HATE IT. And that is just the rant about 1 level, but there are a lot other frustrating moments passed. I'm not even calm enough to write proper English I fear. Pfff. I really hate it. |
I suspect they were so confident that their ideas were great that they didn't bother playing the game before releasing it.
|
You hate SoulStorm, but you have it easy; I hate Oddworld.
|
I dunno, I think hate seems like a pretty strong reaction. I've not personally played Soulstorm myself yet, but having watched pretty much an entire casual playthrough it doesn't seem like a game that's going in a direction I personally care for. I can see why they've changed what they've changed, but it doesn't feel like the sequel I wanted.

That blue bastard and his double jumps
|
i kinda liked it

Oh and it's okay that the dialogue is unintelligible due to poor sound mixing because it's also unnecessary because they're usually describing what's immediately in front of you on the screen. And then they repeat it three times. |

Yeah but you are wojtek and like being contrarian so I do not believe you justice for NNT

Everyone that likes Soulstorm is a CRINGE WOJACK/WOJTEK

Soulstorm pained me as well. While I did successfully play through the entire game, as I love the series and always have since I was a child, I'll never play it again. The best thing about it was the gorgeous cutscenes. It would've made for a better movie if anything as the gameplay is just ass.

And from what gameplay I've seen, I think I'll just stick with the original Oddysee and Exoddus thanks. Really wish they'd be released on the ps4.. I'd buy'em in a heart beat. |

I have a question. Why don't mudokons instantly start killing sligs at the Old Trellis in order to protect escaping mudokons?
|
You can arm the ones that follow you and tell them to, but they're really bad at it.
|
How do I tell them to start fighting?
|
The Gamespeak command that makes the red orb of hate come out of Abe and infect every follower mud in its vicinity

@MA,
The truth is stranger than fiction, and I wasn't kidding about its existence. Though the name for it was my own invention |
SoulStorm pros:
- The cutscene animation and design SoulStorm cons: - The cutscene dialogue - The game |

buying an xbox just so i can play the vykkers labs level
|
The funny thing is that you could say that about MO too and be just as disappointed!
|
The sad thing is that you can play both MO and the Soulstorm's Vykkers levels on other platforms than Xbox

Oddworld: Soulstorm depresses me.
I waited like six years for the game that I was sure would finally spark the love I had for this series as a kid and all I got was the bitter realization that the people left at Oddworld Inhabitants don't understand what actually made the original two games good. The worst part is that I can see the attempt to address complaints about New 'n Tasty, so it's not like they don't care. I think they legitimately made the best game they could that would satisfy fans of the series. And it sucked. It's a bad remake of Abe's Exoddus. It's a bad spiritual successor to the classic two games. It's a bad new direction for the series. The writing is terrible. The tone is all over the place. The gameplay is repetitive, annoying, bloated, and boring. Legitimate puzzle rooms have been replaced with crafting items and throwing them around like an idiot. Every location looks the damn same. Somehow the game makes the same mistakes about Mudokon followers that Munch's Oddysee made two damn decades ago. Oddworld will never be good again. The world, characters, and series we imagined long ago will never be brought to life. I'm an adult now, an entirely different person than I used to be. I thought for a brief moment that I could somehow go back to a life I left behind just for one game, re-experience a joy I haven't felt in ages. But no, it's dead. And maybe it should be, for real. This should probably just be the end of Oddworld. They haven't been able to get it right once since the PS1. Stranger's Wrath was alright as a weird spin-off but every attempt to bring Abe forward has been trash. also anime sucks lmao |
what the fuck, you're that person with the anime avatar
|
What if we made our own Soulstorm, with drugs (Soulstorm brew) and hookers (BBW super queen Sam/Skillya VR action)?
|
we'll get Paul to make one with blackjack and VR hookers don't worry.
|
funny how this was possibly the last thread here and it was how bad the game was
|
Exactly as it should have been.
|
It was meant to be.

Time to make my final post in the Oddworld section of these forums!
I've played through Soulstorm from start to finish. I played the entire story, did my best to rescue mudokons, still got the bad ending, and downloaded a full clear save file to see the last two levels. I haven't played the DLC, but I've watched playthroughs. Soulstorm is in many places frustrating, tedious, grating, and overall disappointing. Not just as an Oddworld game, but as an experience in and of itself. I think what makes it so disappointing is that on paper, so much of what it's trying to do is interesting and has potential, but it's constantly let down by too many game mechanics that aren't meshed well together, abysmal level design that lacks focus and spikes wildly in difficulty, controls that feel too slippery to ever fully master, and a plodding story delivered with grating voice acting. The only thing that shines through for me is the art direction, and even that gets let down in places. It utterly fails to surpass Abe's Exoddus by any metric, save for graphical power and how many mudokons they can billboard on screen at once. And considering one of these games was made in less than a year while the other was in the works for at least 4, that says a lot. I do hope that whatever the next Oddworld game is, the developers can learn from the mistakes made here. But it seems pretty clear that the people holding the bag for what went wrong with Soulstorm are the people running Oddworld Inhabitants - Lorne Lanning holds complete creative control over the company and this game, and frankly he has no one else to blame any more. I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed in what the series has become. |
