Anime.... Seriously, you guys?
|
Well if you can't tell from my constant references to Japan and my huge post I just made above it's definately one of my biggest hobbies that I've been following for nearly seven years (before it was cool).
But I'm not just into animation I also like live-action shows and the game-shows are hilarious sometimes. Sometimes I'll even watch the news just to see the excited anchor women ![]() I'm also a fan of Japanese music, while I haven't really kept up for the last couple months because I've been getting back into "American" (English) music again. Japanese food is also my favorite (although Americanized Chinese is right behind) my favorite dish of all time right now is unadon which is a bowl of fresh water eel over rice and this sauce to KILL for... so as you maybe can see Japan is a big part of my life and anime is with it...SO WHAT ABOUT IT?!! |

One things for sure though, I'm dying to get into more of it. Im still sort of an anime "newbie" condidering I only have access to Toonami (Blech!) and DVDs that are WAY too expensive. Eibu's huge list makes me sad... ![]() |
Hehe :o I got lots:
Dragon Ball/Z (I havn't seen GT yet) Neon Genisis: Evangelion Princess Monoke Outlaw Star Phantom Quest Corps. Final Fantasy:Search for the Crystals (or something like that) Orange Story Tenchi Muyo Battle Arena Toshiden Record of Lodoss War Card Captor Sakura Big O Escaflone Flint the Time Detective Ninja Scroll Whew, I know I like more but I can't remember the names of them, oh well. |
I used to like anime last year. One of my favs was Tenchi Muyo. *Blinks*

I like GT in some ways. Yes true they did have their highest budget with it (even though it virtually flopped, just goes to show what happens when you milk something too much, next up to bat Pocket Monsters! *hopefully*)
But the parts I thought were neat about it were a teenage Pan, further relationship with Bra and Vejita, some of the old characters we don't hear much about came back for brief cameos: RR Army, Nappa, the President, etc. The relationship between Mr. Satan and Mr. Boo could really be felt in his final hour. Basically all the stuff Dragonball doesn't represent in the minds of the masses (ie fighting) is what I enjoy most, when these super-human characters are just being regular family. One of my favorite GT episodes is when Pan is trying to make Super Oozaru Goku remember her and she shows him that picture. They go into a flashback scene when all the main characters were spending a day at the beach, I thought that was pretty neat. Also the last episode was touching...Saraba, Goku. Ano hi made... Wow I haven't talked about Dragonball this much in years...it's funny to talk to Japanese people I know because they all think it's weird a nearly 20 year old show is being idolized like something new. America is so behind. Almost every major country in the world has already shown ALL of the original DB, ALL of Z, and probably ALL of GT years ago... [ December 12, 2001: Message edited by: Eibu ] |

Not to mention we get some horrible dubbed episodes of the series. I wish they had an anime channel on Cablevision that showed unedited anime. Man, that would be great.
|

Yeah, I know :(. They should at least show more anime then Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim. It's still edited, but not as much. I'm dying for them to put some DBZ episodes on it, but I doubt it, since CN thinks DBZ is for kids and kids don't stay up that late .
|
Even though CB is only mildly censored, the bastards skipped like 4 episodes! They need to put Ranma 1/2 back on the air. I believe it is already dubbed. In fact, I think that they used to play it here in America a while back...
|
What's Ranma 1/2 about?
|
I haven't seen the anime, but I read a couple mangas a couple years ago. From what I remember, the story was about a boy who cahnged into a woman when he was in cold water, and then changed back to a man in hot. Or vice versa. Whatever.
|
I have Ranma NiBunNoIchi in English only because it's cheaper (which doesn't make a whole lot of sense) but anyhoo...
Old friends Genma Saotome and Soun Tendo agreed that their children should get married someday in order to carry on the "Anything Goes School of Martial Arts" and take over Soun's dojo. Right before Genma and his 16 year old son, Ranma, were to meet Soun and his three daughters back in Japan Genma took Ranma to a training sight in China. It turns out this training sight, Jusenkyo is a cursed springs. now here is the gimmick Every pool has a curse in it and if you fall in from then on when you came into contact with cold water the curse would transform you into whatever drowned in that pool. Hot water changes you back to normal. It just so happens Ranma, a stubborn sort of guy (like all of Takahashi-sensei's characters), fell into the spring of drowned young girl and his dad fell into spring of drowned giant panda. The two go to Japan and meet the Tendo's where somehow it's decided Ranma and Soun's youngest daughter, Akane , were betroved. (Akane is the same age as Ranma and is the only daughter who practices martial arts). From then on much comedy, semi-romance and strange martial arts ensue and along the way Ranma gets 1000's of fiances. My favorite characters are Shampoo, a Chinese Amazon who wants to kill Ranma's female side and marry his male side, she also happens to turn into a cat (which Ranma happens to have a fear of). The other is Mousse, also from China, master of hidden weapons, and has a thing for Shampoo. Too bad he never wears his glasses and always confuses Shampoo-chan for a pig or statue which pisses her off. He also turns into a duck (Mu-chan). There is so much to the story I could go on all day but there is the gist. It really has to be read/seen to believe. BTW those who are following the anime release in America be warned, the animated version does not come to a conclusion like the manga did. So don't be dissapointed when all they do is wave goodbye at the screen leaving you sitting there and going "WTF, aren't you two getting married?!" |
My favorite is Outlaw star too.My favorite thing in Out law star is the castier gun it was so cool.My favorite castier shell is #3 :)
|
Outlaw Star was pretty good... but of course Toonami made it crap. :p And they skipped Episode 26: The Hot Springs of Tenrei.
|
That episode is actually 23 (26 is the final eps.) and yeah it was great, fan service, gotta love it!
Not only does Gene's determination and lust come through in that episode but it also explains how he obtained those rare shells... You can't blame Cartoon Network too much but I still think it sucks they "castrated" Gene so much and his "wild ways"...at least they are making Kamesennin/Mutenroshi *seem* more interested in girls than before... |
:o
Ack, how embarrassing... Well, I haven't watched in forever, so I guess that is an excuse. And I could download it too! That is, if my modem wasn't slower than a snail duct taped to a cinder block. |
I don´t like Macross the movie...i think the movie 1 and 2 have the same story.
1.Armitage 2.Ghost in the Shell 3.Streetfighter 4.Tekken 5.Blue Submarine No.6 6.Plastic Little 7.Record of Lodoss War 8.Golden Boy 9.Fencer of Minerva 10.Vision of Escaflowne 11.Neon Genesis etc. TBS |

Which Macross are you guys talking about?
Macross:Ai Oboeteimasuka? (original, SAY ROBOTECH AND I WILL NEUTER/SPAY YOU!) Macross 2 Macross Plus Macross 7 Macross Dynamite 7 The Macross 7 series is one of my all time favorites!!! ORE NO UTAU O KIKE!!! I own just about every Mac 7 CD except for: Galaxy Network Chart 2 KareOK Fire!! First Fire!! Mylene Genius sings Lynn Minmay But other than that I have 'em all (which is a lot) The Macross 7 movie was neat but wasn't spectacular, it could have been just another episode (it was only 30 minutes, which is more than an episode w/out commercials). Probably none of you know what I'm talking about so I'll stop. I wish I had the power to expose people to stuff which isn't commercially released outside of Japan because there are so many quality shows that just never reach here and by now many of them are probably too dated. Hell I'm surprised RuroKen is now just leaking out. It sort of sad, 50% of the stuff out here has only been released because it has one or both of the keypoints that sell, sex and violence and the quality programs that DO get picked up is because some of that does make it in (like Eva with "fan service"). I don't know how Lain made it out here but I'm so happy it did, and on DVD!!!! I give a little *sigh* whenever I see people my age running around and thinking DBZ or 80's Cyberpunk stuff that still gets released is praised on high only because that's all they have access too. So many people who won't know the joy of Akazukin Chacha.... |
Robotech.
![]() I am talking about Macross Plus. I didn't think it was very good. |
It all really depends on your taste for each Macross is a little different...
Macross is a classic late 70's mecha following close to the now even more classic Gundam series. Overall it's a Mecha show but with Minmay's influence there is a considerable amount of music. I'm going to ommit love from any of my discriptions because 98% of Japanese stories have something to with love. Macross II is more or less the same. It was simple OAV/Movie that was more about a character driven story than mecha or music. Macross Plus was definately more of a Mecha fans delight (the final dogfight is pretty awesome). Though the show if full of funky tunes and techno beats and Sharon Apple's eclectic music stylings. I liked Plus but mainly for the Mecha and fan-service rather than the music, though I own all the Plus albums. MACROSS 7!!!! If you can't tell I love this show. Definately a Music show! But more than that the characters are awesome, or at least my animated hero, Basara, is to be idolized. Producing more lyrical songs than any other Macross ever and it's J-Rock stylings are to my taste. The story may seem a little immature for the series norm even though we're talking about a series whos major war ended because a teen-idol's singing. So if your a fan of J-Rock/Pop, a little fan-service (few&far-between some episodes), stubborn characters Takahashi-sensei could've created, mecha that don't kill, and little furry things then Mac 7 is for you! It's for me!!! |
Exactly. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.
Now that I think about it, it was Macross II that I didn't like, Macross Plus was pretty cool. |
I'm totally into Sailor Moon..... I still like it after 5 yrs or something... I luv Cardcaptors, Dragon Ball Z and I really h8 Pokemon.... It's really dumb and Ash is gay....
![]() Bye, ~Number 15 |
I'm just curious: 15-san, how old are you?
Yeah I occasionally go back and watch Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon (it's rare now a days), so many themes English viewers will never know, like Zoisait and Fisheye are actually male, Sailorstars (the entire series), the more "horrific" plot (like everybody dying in the past, love tragedies), and the "mature themes" like breast jokes and C. I have to admit Sailormoon was my gateway anime seven years ago and started me on the path to my Japanization. Now I don't see it like used to but still appreciate it. I've explained my feelings on Dragonball by already. I collect the Japanese movies of Pocket Monsters and some choice episodes that either weren't shown or heavily edited in English or that seemed "cool". I also admit I enjoy the Gameboy games but don't "battle" many kids (except my nephews) feeling both overexperienced and silly. Ash's name in Japanese is Satoshi, who is named after the creator of the craze, TAJIRI Satoshi. Another interesting bit of trivia is Gary's Japanese name is Shigeru, who is named after the Father of modern Nintendo, MIYAMOTO Shigeru (creator of DK, Mario, Zelda, etc.). See how they could be "rivals"?! |
