Updated Munch's Oddysee PC Port

Oddworld Inhabitants are releasing a new port of Munch's Oddysee to PC, mainly to address the bugs and problems it still has.

To avoid confusion. This is NOT the HD version.

What do they mean by "fresh port"?

Crashpunk 02-17-2016 03:07 AM

Another team is porting the game onto PC again from scratch. It seems the port was so bad, they just need to start from fresh.

Varrok 02-17-2016 03:25 AM

That was my first assumption too, but in the tweet they said it's a "port update" which kind of contradicts that

Alf Shall Rise 02-17-2016 07:29 AM

Yeah, "port update" isn't the most accurate phrase for it. Hope this new team does a good job at it because the MO port was pretty atrocious.

Varrok 02-17-2016 07:41 AM

If they managed to make a decent port of it, I'd gladly forgive them the sad memories of buying and using the current one (and a few funny memories too)

Alf Shall Rise 02-17-2016 07:49 AM

Ha, that's great. I wasn't even able to make it that far. My game would crash after about half an hour of playing.

Varrok 02-17-2016 08:07 AM

It was definitely completable on my side, but achievements (and many other things!) were totally broken

Havoc 02-17-2016 08:11 AM

According to 'Oddworld Admin' on the Steam forums, they are essentially porting over the mobile version of MO that they recently made to PC.

Vlam 02-17-2016 08:37 AM

So "fresh port" is newspeak.

Varrok 02-17-2016 08:43 AM

It's still fresh compared to current port. Sad it's not the HD version they promised.

Connell 02-17-2016 09:05 AM

Who did the original PC port?

Scrabaniac 02-17-2016 09:06 AM

I hope this isn't stopping their Exoddus production

Another Team is doing the Port.

Not sure, I know JAW did part of the fixing up effort after it was released in an even worse shape than it is now, though.

Scrabaniac 02-17-2016 09:25 AM

Cool. I can't wait for Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus HD Twice the amount of Flavour 2018

Vlam 02-17-2016 09:50 AM

Will you stop being negative? They are working their ass off right now.

Scrabaniac 02-17-2016 09:56 AM

I'm Joking..

Varrok 02-17-2016 10:47 AM

It'll be probably out around 2017. It's not a joke. Game development just takes a long time.

I remember crashing after exiting the first cave. It was like it for months.

Varrok 02-17-2016 01:03 PM

Oh, yes. Now that you mention it, I remember it happening to me too, but I managed to fix it. I remember they gave a small update with a launcher. Maybe that fixed it.

Paul 02-17-2016 01:10 PM

Hmm I would have just done this silently. Marketing "the port was so bad we've had to re do it so it actually works" isn't exactly great.

Varrok 02-17-2016 01:16 PM

It's a common knowledge. Also, I think publicly admitting mistakes (if they were made) is a good sign of a company in the eyes of customers.

Manco 02-17-2016 01:30 PM

I wonder how this will play with save files, do you think it’ll break existing saves?

Varrok 02-17-2016 01:39 PM

Without a doubt.

Wait. What?

Varrok 02-17-2016 01:49 PM

He meant that you should stop being such a negative nancy, OANST, and start appreciate their hard work on the game.

OANST 02-17-2016 01:51 PM

I'd like to change my vote for Most Accomplished Troll to vlam.

I think it's very likely that it will use the same save format.

Varrok 02-17-2016 02:23 PM

You do? But it's a different port made by different people apparently from scratch

Job McYossie 02-17-2016 02:46 PM

does anyone know when it'll be out? I kinda really wanna play it proper.

Varrok 02-17-2016 02:51 PM

Soon.
Valve Time.

EVP_Glukkon 02-17-2016 05:07 PM

This is good news, I look forward to playing it again now.

2017 only if you're optimistic. Probably mid-late 2018.

Varrok 02-19-2016 02:02 AM

We don't really know when they started and if the dev team changed mid-production

Manco 02-25-2016 03:09 PM

You can now opt-in to the beta of the new port on Steam. http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198073277469

Also of note: some of the assets in the beta are from the HD version, and they’re planning on adding Steam trading cards/badges etc.

Nepsotic 02-25-2016 03:28 PM

They should be paying me to play that shit.

it's a joke

Varrok 02-25-2016 03:36 PM

It's working.

With an abundance of small issues with menus, graphics and sound, but it's working.
It also lacks resolution options (at least for now), the older port had those.

I'll gather all the info about problems and post in in the bug reports. Wondering if they'll do anything about that.

Xavier 02-26-2016 02:47 AM

I tried it and it actually works on my 7+ years old laptop. It runs smoothly, plays great and looks good.

What resolution does it play at, then?

I should really try it out at some point, maybe later today.
