"Rise of the Tomb Raider" XBOXOne-exclusivity bullshit!

Hello,

I really need to let off some steam here...

I watched XBoxOnes/Micro$ofts press conference at the gamescom today and I'm soo angry. SO ANGRY.
They pulled off the most assholiest move in video game history for me.
For those who don't know yet:
The next game in the "Tomb Raider" series will be exclusively on XBOXOne.
We don't know anything about PC-Versions yet, but it's unlikely to get one.

Micro$oft paid into Crystal Dynamics and basically told them to shit on their fans and take the money to develop Tomb Raider for XBOXOne only. I can't blame Crystal Dynamics so much, who wouldn't agree to this deal? Get money to compensate the less profit. Good chance.
But the real thing I'm angry about is the reaction from this lead developer or whatever in this post:

http://tombraider.tumblr.com/post/94...-raider-update

Qoute:

"This doesn’t mean that we’re walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4."

I mean, WTF? Does he really want to tell us fans that grew up with the series, the ones that even played the games as 4-year old children together with their parents, the ones that played every game so far, that Temple of Osiris and future "Lara Croft" (!) titles is a compensation for the possible loss of a whole franchise?
It's hard to believe that people can care this little about their fans and potential customers, but money is stronger.

It's a shame where the gaming industry is going. And I'm so glad that Oddworld didn't went this way.

I've lost much faith in the gaming industry and in my second favorite franchise today.

Man, first Robin William's death and now that.
Can we restart this day, please?

Crashpunk 08-12-2014 08:14 AM

It's such a shame. I loved the first reboot Tomb Raider and I was excited to play this one.

It's also pretty fucking dumb as well. Making it an exclusive to Xbox has literally killed all chance of it doing well.

Pirfsich 08-12-2014 08:18 AM

It would have been like this, if it was an PS4-exclusive aswell.
Exclusivity is bullshit, why not let all gamers play it?
I hate saying this and it hurts, but I really hope this game is a flop. So that Crystal Dynamics sees it was bad to do this. But they probably got enough money...

Crashpunk 08-12-2014 08:26 AM

Whilst I agree. Exclusivity won't go away any time soon. They are a Unique selling point. Without it, it would be harder for the companies to sell their systems.

But yeah, This being exclusive does suck. Especially how the original wasn't. (I guess this is how people feel about Bayonetta 2...)

The only exclusive games I don't mind are Nintendo's. You usually buy a Nintendo console to play first and second party games.

Wings of Fire 08-12-2014 08:36 AM

Exclusivity is something the industry needs right now. All the consoles are too homogenous, since Nintendo are the only first party developer that ever try anything different that sticks.

Microsoft in particular kind of needs a unique identity. Right now it's 'All the FPSs with better online support.'

Jordan 08-12-2014 08:42 AM

I'm pretty fucking gutted. I thought TR 2013 was an awesome reboot to a franchise that had been stale for a while and was so pumped for the sequel. I hope to god there will be a turnaround down the line which will mean more people can play.

Pirfsich 08-12-2014 08:49 AM

I pray for Sony to kick Microsoft's butt in 15 minutes.

OANST 08-12-2014 08:54 AM

Grow the fuck up.

Pirfsich 08-12-2014 08:56 AM

Shut up. :*

Man, first Robin William's death and now that.

Wow. Because a beloved actor's death and a fucking video game being exclusive (possibly a timed one at that) to another platform are comparable.

Pirfsich 08-12-2014 09:24 AM

It adds up, you know.
Just like 2+594

OANST 08-12-2014 09:36 AM

Haha. But, seriously. Stop being such a child.

Job McYossie 08-12-2014 09:37 AM

You could see about if one of your friends has a Xbone, and ask to go over and use it. Then you would just have to get the game. I plan to raid a friend's ps4 when the next MGS exlusive comes out. Assuming she gets a PS4, that is.

Why should I? I behave like I do. Stop complaining about it.

MeechMunchie 08-12-2014 11:06 AM

I'll be damned if I'm having the "pissing people off with your personality faults is not their problem to fix" conversation again.

Connell 08-12-2014 11:13 AM

Fucks sake. Another reason to have disdain for Microsoft. That's a real shame, I thoroughly enjoyed the last TR game even if it was rather linear and easy. I recently played through the original and I still can't find every secret. This will be the first Tomb Raider game I won't own since the series' inception.

Serious kick in the teeth. Even used to own all the classic big box PC versions.

Oh, my god. You really are a fucking child.

Pirfsich 08-12-2014 11:16 AM

What have I done wrong in your opinion? Posting it in the first place?

Job McYossie 08-12-2014 11:23 AM

I have the first tomb raider on sega saturn. That's about it though, the new one didn't really interest me too much.

Nate 08-12-2014 10:02 PM

OANST, stop it.
Pirfisch, stop feeding the troll.

JennyGenesis 08-13-2014 12:37 AM

Admin is back, fuck, we must behave now :/

Exclusivity is something the industry needs right now. All the consoles are too homogenous, since Nintendo are the only first party developer that ever try anything different that sticks.

But that's because the hardware is very homogenous. I doubt Tomb Raider is an exclusive because of some brilliant new innovation which only works on the Xbox; I'm sure they could compile the game for PS4 relatively simply, but don't because of some bullshit deal with Microsoft.

Crashpunk 08-13-2014 01:06 AM

Exactly. Microsoft knows that's the Xbox is being outsold by the PS4. So they need all the help they can get, Reaching out to companies with bags of money and asking for exclusivity.

It's actually laughable that Microsoft thinks that this is going to be their "Uncharted" and just because a new one is coming out on PS4, they gotta quickly find Xbox's equivalent. it's actually kinda pathetic.

It also just shows me that the Crystal Dynamics obviously doesn't give a shit about their fans on the other platforms and are willing to go ahead with this deal, which CLEARLY will make the game less popular and fewer sold. I guess Microsoft must of given them the deal of a lifetime to agree to something obviously stupid as that.

Whatever. We'll all look stupid once we find out it is an timed exclusive.

Let me know when you find any third party exclusives in the last three console generations you can't say that about, kay?

I never said otherwise; willfully restricting who can play your game is a shitty thing to do. I inferred that you approved of exclusives due to the consoles being too alike.

Crashpunk 08-13-2014 05:00 AM

Microsoft confirms Rise of the Tomb Raider Xbox exclusivity deal "has a duration"

lol

Varrok 08-13-2014 05:29 AM

Pirfsich 08-13-2014 05:56 AM

Very funny, Crashpunk. I laughed alot. ha. ha.

Jordan 08-13-2014 06:37 AM

Thank fuck for that. Had me worried there for a second.

Crashpunk 08-13-2014 01:47 PM

Sorry. I didn't link the URL: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...has-a-duration

Connell 08-13-2014 07:26 PM

Oh my god thank god everyone god exist I love god great.

Slog Bait 08-13-2014 08:11 PM

Praise de lordah

Nate 08-13-2014 09:30 PM

All video game contracts have a "duration". If nothing else, the publishing rights revert back to the third-party developer after a good number of years.

Bear in mind that Munch's Oddysee was an Xbox Exclusive. Technically its contract had a duration, that being the amount of time until the rights reverted back to OWI. It took a decade to actually appear on another platform.

My point being... saying that the contract has a "duration" doesn't mean you'll be seeing the game on another platform any time soon. Or ever.

MeechMunchie 08-14-2014 06:31 AM

:

"I have Tomb Raider shipping next holiday exclusively on Xbox," Xbox head Phil Spencer told Eurogamer, possibly while salivating. "It is Xbox 360 and Xbox One. I'm not trying to fake anybody out in terms of where this thing is. What they do with the franchise in the long run is not mine. I don't control it." Eurogamer do not mention if, at this point, Spencer's eyes narrowed, as if daring the universe not to bend to his will. "So all I can talk about is the deal I have. I don't know where else Tomb Raider goes."

That last statement came after many preceding statements, including lines like, "My job is not to talk about games I don't own", "I didn't buy the IP. I didn't buy the studio. It's not mine", and "I don't own them building Tomb Raider on other platforms."

All of which finally led Spencer to this: "Yes, the deal has a duration. I didn't buy it. I don't own the franchise."

Spencer finished by not revealing how long the exclusivity deal's duration will last.
