Abyss Odyssey

Is it just me or is the name of ACE Team's new game, Abyss Odyssey, a bit too similar to an other certain game?

http://www.polygon.com/2014/3/5/5473...tudio-ace-team

JennyGenesis 03-06-2014 07:19 AM

Bit funny how this has come about given that New N Tasty isn't far from release...

Varrok 03-06-2014 07:48 AM

Oh come on. Just a coincidence.

Manco 03-06-2014 09:05 AM

The title sounds oddly close, but I think that’s just coincidence. The game itself doesn’t seem anything like AO, stylistically or gameplay-wise.

TheOddgamer98 03-06-2014 09:29 AM

Hmmm..... Thats, thats a little bit confusing. Anyways they should change the name of the game :)

STM 03-06-2014 10:17 AM

HOW FUCKING DARE THEY.

Pirfsich 03-06-2014 10:41 AM

I seriously read "Abe's Odyssey" in the title and wanted to correct you...
That is an odd coincidence, indeed (pun intended)

Crashpunk 03-06-2014 11:57 AM

Honestly, I think this is just a strange coincidence. I highly doubt this was done on purpose.

I would be more suspicious if it had Strangeworld or Weirdworld in the title. :)

Pirfsich 03-06-2014 12:14 PM

Wierdworld: Abyss Odyssey"
and the follow-up game made in 9 months,
"Wierdworld: Abyss's Exadus"

Dont forget "Unknown's Fury"
or "Ranger's Bath"

lol

JennyGenesis 03-06-2014 01:21 PM

Or Munchies odyssey? The marijuana themed game of the series.

Job McYossie 03-06-2014 03:42 PM

The and all the good guys will be green.

I don't think it's trying to get a ride off of OW, but I do think it should be changed.

Havoc 03-06-2014 05:15 PM

Pff, how cheap. That name is too similar to be a coincidence if you ask me. Not sure what they're trying to do, ride along with the hype around Oddworld or something? I don't buy that any self respecting game developer does not see this title is similar to that of a cult classic that happens to be remade at the moment...

OddYouko 03-06-2014 08:31 PM

Seriously?
I think someone is jealous of our good pal Abe..

Yeah, because ACE clearly knows about Abe's Oddysee and don't have popular any games on their own

STM 03-07-2014 12:34 AM

It does sort of remind me of Gary's Incident. But hey ho.

Crashpunk 03-07-2014 02:00 AM

These are the devs of Zeno Clash, a somewhat successful series that began as a HL2 Mod. Not some shitty studio making crap iOS knock offs. They aren't stupid enough to blatantly replicate another game's name.

If I see good evidence that this is actually rip off, My point stands. It's just a coincidence.

Varrok 03-07-2014 06:19 AM

Also, Rock of Ages.

You have to be living under a rock as a game developer to not know some of the most classic titles in your own profession. Especially 2D side scrollers. Them saying "We have no idea what Abe's Oddysee is" might actually make them suck more as developers than blatantly ripping the title.

Varrok 03-07-2014 07:23 AM

No. What you're saying is stupid and I don't agree.

Jordan 03-07-2014 07:35 AM

I agree with Havoc. Any game developer will have most likely done a fair bit of research into the type of game they're creating before actually starting production.

Varrok 03-07-2014 08:23 AM

Have you seen the gameplay trailer of this game? It's nothing like any Oddworld game.

Xavier 03-07-2014 08:28 AM

Well now that they have announced it I guess they will notice (if they did not before) that there is a huge resemblance. Simply look at the comment of each site reporting this announcement and you will see a lot of people saying they read it as Abe's Oddysee.

But honestly, unless this is a game about an Odyssey in the Abyss, I think the name is too silly to be a coincidence.

Manco 03-07-2014 08:38 AM

Well it’s a roguelike, so that’s pretty much exactly what it is.

Would buy.

No connection to Abe's Oddysee... I actually don't know anyone in the design team who's even played it, so for sure no.

JennyGenesis 03-07-2014 02:13 PM

Givr0en the popularity of Oddworld I find that highly unlikely.

Crashpunk 03-07-2014 04:04 PM

The Cun't Spill is so strong. You added numbers.

It's been more than 15 years since AO came out. Even among people who played the game it's now more of a historical footnote than a cherished memory. Hell, just two weeks ago I was talking to someone about classic games and out of the blue he asked me if I had heard of 'Abe's Oddworld'.

Pirfsich 03-07-2014 04:42 PM

"No connection to Abe's Oddysee"...
Sure...

New 'n' Tasty will be released on 17. April 2014!

Who would believe me?
...
Exactly.

When you pronounce "New 'n' Tasty" it sounds a bit different than "Abe's Oddysee", and it's the former which is more used in marketing now. They might even have heard about it but didn't know it's the same thing.

It was surprising how often people I knew used to call it 'Abe's Oddworld'. Is it easier to say/remember than 'Abe's Oddysee' or something?

RoryF 03-08-2014 05:39 AM

Probably because they found Oddworld and Abe easier to remember, being that they're the first two words in the title and Abe is the main character in it, as well as Odd and World being used more than Odyssey.

I thought it looked quite a bit similar.

Saw this on Gameinformer earlier in the week, was toying with whether to make a new thread to discuss it or not, so I'm glad someone did!

I agree with Havoc, a games company should indeed have enough knowledge of their field to be aware of similar names. Hell, anyone creating a brand should do at the very least a quick search online to see if anything similar already exists.

Even if the similarity was not intended (I'm skeptical) it's still trademark infringement. The test for infringement is whether reasonable members of society would become confused between the brands. Even as a longtime Oddworld fan who knows the brand well, I myself (as others here also seem to have) only went to the article thinking it was Abe's Oddysee related. If that's not confusion I don't know what is.

Especially with New n' Tasty coming out so soon, this seems a bit dodgy. If Abyss Odyssey ends up with bad press/reviews etc, it could harm the success of New n' Tasty.

Weirdworld sounds too much like Waterworld :p
Its not as clear cut as say The War Z or the voxel based 'Craft/Mine' clones

Basically this ^

Intended resemblance or not I think that seeing everyone is confusing it for Abe's Oddysee they should have the decency to come up with an other name in order to avoid confusion.

JennyGenesis 03-10-2014 04:02 AM

There was once a court case between THQ and Activision with one of them claiming that the other copied their box art, probably didn't help that both games are based on the same sport and were released less than a month apart from each other.

http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/ph...aja_covers.jpg

The result of the case was that Activision then changed the box art of their game to this

http://static.gamespot.com/uploads/s...619_screen.jpg

I find it highly unlikely that J.A.W would take things down that route, but I'm sure that a friendly suggestion to the developers of Abyss Oddysee wouldn't hurt.
