What happened to the Oddworld Library?

subj :fuzconf:

Fred The Fuzzle 09-08-2012 03:29 PM

Apparently it was infected with viruses and had to be closed.

Wil 09-08-2012 05:10 PM

And then I cleaned it of viruses and it went back into operation.

And then the domain name expired and my registrar hasn't renewed it despite my paying them to.

MeechMunchie 09-08-2012 06:09 PM

Someone stole our internet! Quick! Get the network hacked back online!

It's not working! Use maximum access clearance!

Phylum 09-08-2012 06:51 PM

enchilado 09-08-2012 09:10 PM

[sudo] password for Phylum:

It's not responding!

Crashpunk 09-09-2012 02:54 AM

Oddworld Library.exe is not responding
Windows is checking for a solution to the problem.

useretail 09-09-2012 03:54 AM

Viruses?! Have you heard about Linux? :)

Phylum 09-09-2012 04:14 AM

I was actually making a joke about the terminal password prompt making whatever you type invisible and the confusion it causes people.

Breaking news: There are viruses that affect files hosted on Linux servers.

Well, some viruses (especially worms) act by themselves, otherwise your site was simply hacked (meaning not infected)

Nepsotic 09-09-2012 05:05 AM

I'm relatively certain he knows what it was.

Nate 09-09-2012 06:24 AM

I'm completely certain that the virus is old news.

The domain registrar just needs to fix the DNS settings and all will be good.

useretail 09-09-2012 02:30 PM

I hope content is safe :)

Wil 09-09-2012 02:31 PM

It is. The host is quite separate from the domain registration. In theory you should be able to access it with an IP address, but I can't find what that IP address is.

Havoc 09-09-2012 03:36 PM

Then you have a shitty host ;)

Xavier 09-10-2012 07:53 AM

Any idea, when it will be back up?

Nepsotic 09-10-2012 10:01 AM

Dem non-standard commas.

MeechMunchie 09-10-2012 02:33 PM

Make a wiki instead.

Make a wiki instead.

Should we start from scratch or fix the existing one - the Oddworld Wikia at the moment is lacking a lot of information.

I've even offered to make the staff here admins of the Oddworld Wikia, but they weren't quite interested.

Xavier 09-10-2012 11:48 PM

I am actually still very much interested and I think revamping the oddworld wiki might not be such a bad idea. As much as I love Wil's articles they just take years to be written, and now that he's an insider I am not sure if he'll be able to write them anymore.

Adrelvis, does the offer to make us admins still stand?

Who are the current admins?

useretail 09-11-2012 01:53 AM

IMO wiki is good for text information, for an articles. I'm interested in redesigning old Oddworld Library (not wiki)

Crashpunk 09-11-2012 03:13 AM

I would love to see a fresh new design on the Wiki. Hell, I'm still waiting for a new style for the Forum :)

Havoc 09-11-2012 03:23 AM

Wil has said on multiple occasions how much he hates traditional Wiki systems due to the way the coding and syntax's work. Personally I think a regular wiki page, like so many game franchises have these days, would be just fine.

In fact, just go here and edit whatever needs editing.

http://oddworld.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

Seems to serve its purpose well enough?

Wil 09-11-2012 03:50 AM

I'm determined to get the encyclopedia section of Oddworld Library full to the brim of information. I just don't know how to get an authoring environment that doesn't piss me off massively.

STM 09-11-2012 08:31 AM

authoring environment.

What do you mean by this? I'm curious as to whether I might be able to offer some assistance or at least information. =)

Nepsotic 09-11-2012 08:59 AM

I like how when you hear the word 'author' or anything else to do with writing, your ears always prick up.

A way to edit Wiki pages that isn't shitty.

I’ve heard good things about Whiskey, the CMS used by Giant Bomb, but I don’t know if that’s licensable at all.

On the other hand, does Oddworld really have such a rapidly increasing amount of information associated with it to justify having a full wiki to house it?

Wil 09-11-2012 11:53 AM

It has an 18 year history, the majority of which I am very familiar with. I could write hundreds of articles, if only it weren't so tedius to do certain things, which is what I mean by 'authoring environment'.

References is the biggest problem. I can source references fine, I can (in my head) know perfectly where they should go. I can write the actual reference list. But marking that all up in any wiki code I've come across is just dreadful.

Sanssouci 09-11-2012 12:04 PM

If that's the main problem, why not write articles in the academic style with references simply, for example, (Lanning 2003a) and the list at the end. You could worry about linking them later or not at all

I'm not sure how you are trying to do it, but on this Wikia page all that is needed is the following code:

:

<ref name="IGN.com">[http://uk.games.ign.com/articles/122/1222894p1.html '''IGN.com:''' ''The Near-Death, Rebirth, and Future of Oddworld'']</ref>
Which to me seems as easy as it is going to get. It turns it into the little [1] thingy and automatically lists all references at the bottom of the page.

How exactly are you trying to do it?

OANST 09-11-2012 04:34 PM

He's trying to do it the right way, you cheating son of a bitch!

Havoc 09-12-2012 01:51 AM

I was not aware there was a 'right' way?

Jordan 09-12-2012 02:55 AM

I'd love an 'official' wiki. I just find it a little hard to trust wikia sites sometimes.

Wil 09-12-2012 04:24 AM

Oddworld.com needs a universe section, too. God damn I wish I had more time.

Nate 09-12-2012 04:29 AM

You can't just take the Universe section of the old site and make it work on non-IE browsers?
