TF2: Mann vs. Machine
Team Fortress 2 is getting a HUGE update tomorrow.
Mann Vs Machine The idea of this Mann vs. Machine gamemode is that it's co-op. 6 people try and survive and defend a Mann Co factory. The enemies are robotic versions of all the 9 classes and some come in different sizes and have some unlockable weapons (e.g. Like the Huntsmen) So in a nut-shell, it's like L4D Survival only there's 6 of you and you have to defend a building. Valve even made a fantastic video showing RED and BLU teaming up and destroying the Robots. :D For any TF2 fan this is some exciting stuff and it sounds like a heap of fun. So what do you guys think? EDIT: Oh and not only that. The Steam Community is having a huge update too. |
Robots look cool, but it looks like the gameplay's gonna be L4D.
|
Oh this should be pretty epic. I like how they are fleshing out the TF2 backstory a lot more lately.
And yay Steam Community update :D. |
Aw, they didn't go with zombies... Game Industry C-c-combo Breaker!
I'm interested - as always, I love to see the new TF2 video and related comics. The gamemode sounds intriguing, kinda like a defense-only Awesomenauts/LoL/HoN/MOBA game, with the robots dropping money (that's their fuel, apparently) which serves as your source for upgrades in-game. It would serve as good ground for making something for the OWFCommunity channel, supposing that someone is able to film a session or two. |
I found theory videos on this yesterday (before the reveal)
I just thought it was going to be another team to fight in the game, looks like I was wrong. like the idea of the teams combining though. |
This update has been hinted since The Engineer Update; which was a long time ago! Valve must of had this idea for quite some time.
Also this is sounding like a conclusion to the TF2 storyline but I highly doubt it is. It won't be the last update that's for sure. |
More like the final chapter in the story I think. Red and Blu finally settle their differences to fight a common enemy (until the end of time, of course).
|
TF2 has a story line?
|
It has, just not a very apparent one. It's quite deep, actually. You can find it on the TF2 wiki.

There's some hundred-and-fifty-year-old dude that wants to get pregnant or something. You can't make this shit up.
|
It started out as a barebones Excuse Plot. Over time it evolved into a more elaborate Lampshade Hanging of an Excuse Plot. Rather than trying to extend the existing backstory to explain new gameplay, they've just introduced ever more ridiculous elements to the story to highlight the fact that it's not really important.
|
You have to give them credit for writing a pretty elaborate story just to emphasize that the story is so ridiculous that you shouldn't pay attention to it.
I think the guys at Valve just can't stand a game that is just a game, there has to be a story. Left 4 Dead could have just been a zombie shooter, but that has a fairly elaborate story and backstory as well. |
Bits of details have been released about the abilities of the nine classes for the co-op mode, along with info on various types of canteens (i.e. potions).
Also, as usual, there is a hidden link on the Mercs page that will reveal even more about the upgrades screen. |
|
So much for my subtlety and allowing everyone else to find the link on their own. Oh well. :P
I'm actually looking forward to this one. Aside from comics and the odd video, I haven't been too excited about previous updates. |
Notice there's a Demoman tab, where you probably can upgrade base stats, like health or whatever, not just weapons
|
You'll probably need all the upgrades to survive the highest waves. Would me fun to have those stats in a regular round though.
Anyway the update should happen in a few hours when Valve opens its office. Who's up for a match when the update is live? |

So day 3. The game mode is free, but there is a premium game mode that gives you rewards for completing a mission which costs $0,99 per ticket.
And of course people are completely going batshit over this because OMG VALVE ARE MONEY HUNGRY BASTARDS. I'm getting so tired with people sometimes. |
Speaking as a non-TF player, I'm confused. Does this mean that TF2 will always be humans vs. AI for ever now? Or will they revert to team-based action? Or is it Red vs Blue vs Robots?
|
No it's just a new gamemode beside the already existing ones. You can play it for free, but you can also buy a ticket to play the premium version of the gamemode which gives you a reward upon completion and tracks your stats.
|
From what I understand, you receive your first ticket free of charge. And that's how most addictions start.
Anyway, when I get back from work later today, I might harass some of you on Steam to give the new gamemode a try together. |
I'd be up for that, if it's a reasonable time here.
|
I've got to go to bed early so I can get up for a flight at 1, but I'm awake now.
|
I also tried to play this new mode but after waiting for 20 minutes for the game to find me a match I quit. It's great!
|
We had the same experience, except we looked for MVM servers in the Servers menu, and succeeded. It is indeed great.
|
Finished my first mission, Coal Town and Decoy are hard as fuck.
|
I found out that the Fan O'War for the Scout is an amazing weapon for this mode. Try using it on Tanks, Sentry Busters and Big Robots.
You hit something and it gets Mini-Crits on it "marks them for death" so it's a bit like the Jarate only it's better because it's a melee weapon and once Mark runs out, you just have to hit them again. |
