I love awful 40 year old Hannah Barbera cartoons.

I feel the same way about them that you feel about Disney movies.

Oh, man. That's disturbing. And so very wrong.

I'm actually sort of with Joe on this one. I don't like The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Scooby Doo, or really anything Hannah Barbera is famous for. I do like Tom & Jerry to an extent, but I'm not a fan of those overproduced, cheaply-animated cartoons they churned out in the 60's-80's. They were all cut from the exact same mold, and very few of them were genuinely entertaining. With the exception of perhaps the three I listed.

But you named their three worst. What about Top Cat, Wally Gator, Magilla Gorilla, Atom Ant and Secret Squirrel, Yogi Bear, Jabberjaw, CAPTAIN CAVEMAN, AND HONG KONG PHUEY?

That shit was great.

I admit to holding some fondness for Hong Kong Phuey and Wacky Races.

I didn't really like any of them. I've seen them all, make no mistake. They just don't click with me.
Part of it might be that I really don't like the art style. The thick line, hyper-simplified look just isn't my thing. Even in the case of more modern shows like Dexter and PPG, which clearly emulate those classic cartoons, I always resented the animation to some degree.

Dastardly and Muttley in their Flying Machines is the real shit. I have always loved the fuck out of that.

I forgot that one. That was also fucking awesome.

Laff-O-Lympics was the only Hanna Barbera garbage that satisfied me, probably because there was just so much shit to process. I always used to watch (and never remember enjoying) Scooby Doo, except for on the weeks leading up to Halloween. That's when they broke out shit like 13 Ghosts, which is still one of my favourite things to catch every year. I remember bursting out in the car when I was little saying "WAITAMINUTE--every episode of Scooby Doo is the same!" and going into one of those thoughtful child cycles that annoy the hell out of me from youngsters these days.

I didn't hate 13 Ghosts. Even as a kid I hated all of the other Scooby Doo shows, though.

The only Scooby Doo anything ever that was good was Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island.

If it wasn't for Scrappy's existence, the rest of the franchise would be worth it for that.

I remember those Laff-o-Lympics. They'd air them on Teletoon every time the Olympics rolled around. I used to get so excited for the Olympics just to watch those cartoons.

Then I realized they were mostly just recycled from older cartoons. Ah, maturity.

I don't remember waching many cartoons when I was little because my childhood was filled with Doctor Who.

It was pretty terrible. You don't recognize it for how terrible it truly is when you're a kid though.

It starred Vincent Price as himself, so it was hard to hate. I did hate that little asian(?) kid they tacked onto the cast. As if Scrappy Doo wasn't annoying enough.

My girlfriend summed up the Scooby Doo umbrella pretty well;
"If Shaggy is wearing a red shirt, don't watch it".

Catch the Pigeon was the shit.

Wacky Racers was always my favourite Boomerang program. That and Tom & Jerry, that was the SHIT.

What bugs me about boomerang is that they're showing shows i watched as a kid, like Courage the Cowardly Dog, and Dexter's Lab. Those shows aren't that old...

And maybe it's because i was born in a different time, but the jetsons and the flintstones never were that funny to me. I liked the pink panther though.

Why does it bug you that they're showing funny high quality cartoons that you grew up with?

And just because it's not old doesn't mean it doesn't belong on the channel alongside other great cartoons.

I wish I could've grown up on Cartoon Network. I mean, we still got most of the shows here in Canada on other channels, but still. It's not the same.

I really liked the Hanna-Babera smurf cartoons. However they were originally gonna add a Smurf sized dog in the cartoon because they thought dogs brought more attention to other audiences. I swear. Pretty much all their shows have dogs.

I miss The Weekenders and Fillmore! Those shows were the shit.

We got Yvon of the Yukon in the UK for a while. It wasn't that bad.

Angela Anaconda can fuck right off though.

I worked that out by Wiki'ing Bis, a rubbish pop band who used to cameo on it.

I used to love a cartoon called Brandy and Mr Whiskers when I was 7. I have fond memories of waking my dad up at 6:30 to watch it with me in the six weeks he was at home after his heart attack.

I saw it again a few years later and thought it was shit.

Also, I remember BB3B. I used to think it was dumb, but my dad enjoyed it so I ended up watching quite a bit of it.

People tend to remember cartoons from their childhood with fairly thick nostalgia goggles. Myself included. The other day my friends and I were trying to remember all the children's programs on the ABC from around the turn of the century.


Do any of our Australian members remember this? Those cabbage wings apparently cause thousands of epileptic seizures.



My father was head of construction on that movie. That movie paid off our mortgage. That movie is good.

I loved that when I was 3/4. When I saw the name I remembered the music instantly.

Tom and Jerry, Jesus looking back at how violent it was, I'm surprised they even aired most of them.

Now, Johnny Bravo. That was a good show. Same with Weekenders and Recess. Probablywere probably the only shows I watched on Family channel, other than Dave the Barbarian but that got old really fast.

Angela Anaconda was so weird. She like had those crazy revenge fantasies and it felt like she could snap at any time.
