first hybrid shark discovered

This is so big I think it deserves its own thread

http://www.springerlink.com/content/147031537857tx27/

"Detection of interspecies hybridisation in Chondrichthyes: hybrids and hybrid offspring between Australian (Carcharhinus tilstoni) and common (C. limbatus) blacktip shark found in an Australian fishery"

This could be a sign for a class reacting to the global warming. pretty amazing, huh? evolution in action.

No pictures = I don't care.

Glad someone informed me there were no snaps. Just saved me 12 seconds of my time I can now fap in.

OANST 01-03-2012 05:05 PM

I perform a valuable service here.

Sorry, I already had the fap.

Oh wait, I see what you meant.

Strike Witch 01-03-2012 05:27 PM

I just watched Deep Blue Sea last night.

Coincidence? I think not.

OANST 01-03-2012 05:29 PM

Are there Japanese people in that?

Bullet Magnet 01-03-2012 05:31 PM

Well I found it very interesting.

OANST 01-03-2012 05:33 PM

You ruin everything.

Bullet Magnet 01-03-2012 05:48 PM

I ruin attempts at ruination. This is known as rescue.

OANST 01-03-2012 06:05 PM

It's known as wet blanket syndrome.

Bullet Magnet 01-03-2012 06:29 PM

Tomato, potato.

What if it was just really desperate for a root?

Mr. Bungle 01-04-2012 12:37 AM

That's pretty cool. I hope they don't turn into mutant super-sharks that plot to kill us all.

enchilado 01-04-2012 01:20 AM

Man, those fucking chondrichthyans. That's basically zoophilia right there.

Let's just hope great whites don't cross with whale sharks.

Crashpunk 01-04-2012 02:59 AM

I don't know what any of them sharks are, Nor do I partically care. Unless this 'new' Shark is the size of a whale or something.

Bullet Magnet 01-04-2012 05:17 AM

Imagine a shark that is part this

http://www.prionace.it/Car_limbatus.jpg

and part this

Sekto Springs 01-04-2012 05:52 AM

So basically it would look like a shark, is what you're saying.

This.

Nate 01-04-2012 05:56 AM

The point is that this is like a Tiglon or a Liger, only aquatic. And naturally occuring, rather than man-forced.

Or a mule.

Do we know yet whether they're sterile?

MeechMunchie 01-04-2012 06:00 AM

Yes, it would look like a shark... but a shark that looks like a shark.

EDIT: Double ninja'd

STM 01-04-2012 06:29 AM

Get rid of the bastards by dropping a few Japanese into their habitat. Bring things back to their natural balance.

no they can reproduce themselves.

Crashpunk 01-04-2012 08:15 AM

Bullet Magnet's sig is very appropriate.

Sekto Springs 01-04-2012 08:32 AM

When the cross-breeding of sharks results in such evolutionary traits as head-mounted laser guns and razor blade fins, let me know.

Sekto Springs 01-04-2012 09:27 AM

Exactly.

Bullet Magnet 01-04-2012 10:00 AM

Ligers grow much bigger than both lions and tigers. This may be because of imprinted genes that are only expressed when inherited from a certain parent, the upshot of which is that they either get a boost in genetically-ordained growth or miss out on a growth inhibitor. The same thing sometimes occurs in dog cross-breeds.

It is not inconceivable that a viable shark hybrid is possible with a similar effect, that could lead to giant sharks. If that doesn't interest you guys I don't know what will.

Sekto Springs 01-04-2012 10:42 AM

But we already have giant sharks. Albeit extremely docile ones.
They still don't have laser guns though.

Tomato, potato.

so whats your problem with potatoes, huh? you think that just because you're some identical shark scientist you can start relating the steadfast, hardy potato with the GIRLY blushing-red tomato? is that what this is? you with your shrimps and seagull shit having a pop at potatoes?

Giant is relative. That's not giant for a whale shark.

But suppose a hybrid of mako and mackerel shark exhibited this form of gigantism. You would sit up and take notice, and wonder if it's big enough for lasers yet.

How many generations of evolution would it take for it to be noticeably disproportional? Will any of us still be alive?

Bullet Magnet 01-04-2012 07:09 PM

One.

moxco 01-05-2012 03:23 AM

The article didn't say, but are the hybrids fertile?

Phylum 01-05-2012 03:25 AM

[...] they can reproduce themselves.

Although reading that again I can't help but think they'll get to a point at which they just split into two smaller sharks.

moxco 01-05-2012 03:36 AM

Whoops I missed that. So do biologists consider this genetic pollution desirable or not?

Bullet Magnet 01-05-2012 11:23 AM

Depends on your standards. This sort of thing is a natural phenomenon, but sometimes it is a result of human action, be it the introduction of invasive species that can breed with the natives, or altering the environment in a way that makes two species' natural ranges overlap. The effect can be the extinction of one or both of the original species, but in some cases can create a whole new species in a single generation. This usually happens in plants.
