The Binding of Isaac

MOD EDIT: This thread split of from the 'What are you playing right now?' thread.

Finally completed Binding of Isaac with Eve. The game's only going to get harder, so I need to get the worst characters out of the way first if I want a decent completion percentage.

And here's almost everyone who died to make this runthrough possible.

Phylum 12-19-2011 02:45 PM

I've never been able to win with Eve. She has some really good starting items, but I can never get much farther than The Caves. I really like playing as her, but I just can't haven't had a decent run of items.

My best run was easily the first time I beat The Womb.

http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1324338231

I went on to get some more cool stuff after that, too. Brimstone made the final dungeon way too easy.

MeechMunchie 12-20-2011 12:49 PM

First time I got Brimstone I also had Chocolate Milk, which eliminated the charge time. That was the only time I had found a runthrough easy.

And Eve does not have "really good" items. Dead Bird is quite good, but you only notice its effectiveness because Eve's own attacks are so weak. Also the enemy detection range is really short. The Whore of Babylon seems really useful at first, until you realise that it only activates when you're about to die, meaning you'll rarely get to use it for more than twenty seconds. I've been saved by a Cube of Meat more often than WoB.

But who cares, I'm done with her now. Judas FTW.

Phylum 12-20-2011 04:26 PM

Given that they're starting items and aren't designed to break the game from level 1 I find them really handy. Happy?

I love Judas. He is easily my favourite character. Because of his low health I make a real effort to take no damage in boss fights and end up with lots of Devil rooms that I can't do anything in without killing myself. My last playthrough with him saw me finding Technology really early on and stampeding through down to The Depths, where I trod carelessly and was squashed by a giant foot.

Are the achievements on Mac supposed to be fixed yet? I'm still not getting any. I've reinstalled 3 times and still nothing. I hope I won't have to fight Krampus again to get the Christmas one.

How many Mom Kills are you on?

MeechMunchie 12-20-2011 11:08 PM

Without checking, I think I'm on 3 Mom kills - Cain, Judas and Eve - though Cain doesn't count because the Womb doesn't unlock until the second playthrough.

For some people, the achievements just don't work. They don't work for me either, but STM's unlocking them fine.

Anyway, Judas is my fave because he directly appeals to my mantra: "A dead enemy can't hurt you". Damage output will always be the most important thing.

EDIT: Actually 4. First was with Isaac.

There are other characters?

Isaac, Cain, Magdalene, Judas, Eve, ???.

STM 12-22-2011 09:24 AM

As MM has probably noticed, I can't play rogulikes for shit! That being said I absolutely love BoA to bits, it's just I've only completed it once is all. XD

Phylum 12-22-2011 01:51 PM

I just had an amazing run as Judas. I finally unlocked Cain, too.

The notable items I found in the run were, in no order: the Small Rock, Chocolate Milk, SSssSSSs, Sister Maggy, Carm of the Vampire, Steam Sale and The Battery. It was the best Judas run I've had, but I decided to commit suicide in The Depths and go to bed because I have performances on today.

Crashpunk 12-22-2011 01:57 PM

I've never played this game but I really want to. I've noticed that the top menu is exacally the same as the NES Legend of Zelda.

Phylum 12-22-2011 08:11 PM

Holy shit! that must mean it's good!

enchilado 12-22-2011 11:48 PM

I still don't think I've figured out how to play this game. I tend to run around a bit, try to fight a boss and die.

Crashpunk 12-23-2011 01:50 AM

I didn't say that I'm only intrested in this game because of the Zelda menu now did I?

No, that's how the game's supposed to work.

However, as you play more, the time between encountering an enemy and dying will slowly increase.

Phylum 12-23-2011 02:15 PM

You'll also get to know what most of the items do and when it's a good idea to use them. The game is fairly overwhelming at first, but eventually you'll get a good run of items and kill Mum. After that everything gets a bit easier.

MeechMunchie 12-23-2011 02:18 PM

She's Mom, not Mum.

Threatening:
Mom
Mummy
Mother

Not threatening:
Mum
Mam
Mammy
Mommy

Wings of Fire 12-23-2011 04:00 PM

I think Mammy is kind of chilling in its own way.

STM 12-23-2011 04:47 PM

Mummy is cute not scary!

Phylum 12-23-2011 06:13 PM

Mummy is cute to the point where it can be scary.

MeechMunchie 12-24-2011 07:02 AM

I associate it with clingy middle-aged psychopaths. Like 'Mummy Issues'.

"No, Mummy. Of course not, Mummy. I could never kill someone... again."

Now Mommy, that is cute.

STM 12-24-2011 10:13 AM

But it sounds almost exactly the same.

Wings of Fire 12-24-2011 10:19 AM

Dunno what accent you have then.

STM 12-24-2011 11:39 AM

South Eastern XD

On topic, I just beat mum's heart for the first time. I feel rather proud right now, Judas is tricky to play though.

Phylum 12-24-2011 12:59 PM

Learning to play as Judas will do you wonders. You will be a master bullet dodger by the time you get a mom kill with him.

You'll want to smash every X rock just in case they drop soul hearts.

MeechMunchie 12-26-2011 05:43 AM

I do that anyway, so long as I have bombs to spare. A Small Rock early on can really get a good run going.

The real trick is learning to locate secret rooms.

Phylum 01-10-2012 08:09 PM

I just started a game with Judas. I found Technology in the first item room. It was the fastest I've ever descended without the shovel.

I died in the Mom fight, sadly.

MeechMunchie 01-11-2012 02:44 PM

I had a great Isaac run where I got Inner Eye first level, and proceeded to find nothing but speed and tear upgrades, plus a bit of health up and range up. And a damage up. But mainly speed and tears. Odd Mushroom #2, The Belt and Wooden Spoon, I believe. Then I traded two hearts away for the Ouija Board, which in retrospect wasn't a good idea since there aren't many walls in The Womb. I only had 2-1/2 hearts left when I got to Scrolex, and soon died.

In other news, Lemon Mishap is surprisingly useful.

Also, this was this time yesterday. I'm surprised I remember it with such clarity.

That was my best run (I've had about >12 more soul hearts off-screen)... I wish the game was harder :/

MeechMunchie 01-15-2012 12:50 PM

*Sparkle*

Your wish is granted.

(Also it does that every time you complete it). You've got to complete it 12 times to actually complete it.

If you want 100%... Good luck. Try getting through The Womb without taking any damage.

Don't get me wrong:
http://steamcommunity.com/id/Varr0k/...b=achievements

The game is STILL EASY for me

MeechMunchie 01-15-2012 01:58 PM

Three possibilites:

1) You are some kind of gaming god.
2) You have a very high boundary for what you call 'easy'.
3) You are full of shit.

Someone help me choose.

Varrok 01-15-2012 02:02 PM

I wish it was 1) but it's probably 2)

MeechMunchie 01-15-2012 02:11 PM

Tip: If it was hard, it probably wasn't easy.

Varrok 01-15-2012 02:17 PM

Oh, I did understand 2) as "What you call easy, is hard in general"...

BoI wasn't really hard for me, but I am an active gamer since 15years ago (I got my PC when I was 4), and I completed Castlevania1 just before starting Isaac, which surely affected my opinion about its difficulty

I wouldn't call myself "A Gaming God" - I had problems with I Wanna Be The Guy (didn't complete, I would if I had more time and will to)

MeechMunchie 01-16-2012 01:11 PM

Had a few of these now. Pretty cool.

IWBTG is not hard, because it's impossible to predict what's going to happen. It's just trial and error.

As for BoI, I haven't got past the fourth level yet. I think I need to pay more attention to dodging stuff and less to hitting the enemy.

Why is it that as you play more, harder enemies appear higher up?

MeechMunchie 01-16-2012 11:00 PM

No. Harder enemies appear lower down. Enemies that were perviously only in the Caves start creeping up to the Basement etc. I'm getting mini-bosses in The Caves on a regular basis.

Also enemies get faster, smarter and do more damage.

Don't underestimate the 'smarter'. The quality of the pathfinding on the red zombie guys is directly proportional to how difficult they are to beat. Previously I could just lead them in circles, now they ambush me in pincer formations when I try to do that. And they're about 50% faster than they were when I started, regeneration and all.

enchilado 01-16-2012 11:04 PM

I KILLED MOM

MeechMunchie 01-16-2012 11:04 PM

Great! The game is now two levels longer and a lot harder.

Phylum 01-16-2012 11:36 PM

Yeah. What MM said. I've only cleared the womb twice in countless hours of playing.

Those guys are bastards. Especially the ones with the eye.

The enemies that continue to get the better of me are the hopping guys with blood around their neck. The ones that can send 4 bullets out when they do a large jump. When there are more than 4 of them in a room I'm guaranteed to get hit. The really fast worm things that first appear in The Depths are fairly annoying, too. Roomfuls of them become really stressful.

I've been struggling with some of the odd combinations in The Womb in my last few runs. The enemies that shoot lasers from their chest in conjunction with just about anything freaks me out. The eye-worms that move through rocks are the worst. Luckily they're still really rare for me.
