What do you think about skaters?

I think they're much cooler and more skilled than scooter and bike riders. And I really dislike scooter riders. They're fucking everywhere.
I also ride a skateboard so I know how hard it is to look cool on one :D
What is your opinion on this?

Nate 08-14-2011 01:49 AM

On the whole, I don't think about skaters.

STM 08-14-2011 01:49 AM

I used to fucking love skateboarding, I got really good too, up to a point where I could do kick flips, grinds and manuals...then my board snapped in two. I bought a new board two or three years ago and could barely even keep my balance so I lost all the good stuff I learnt.

What started my passion for skating was THPS 1 not surprisingly, you can't beat completing a 720 kick flip to indie nose bone with a guy that probably has no more than 1000 poly's on his body. ^_^

Mudokon_Master 08-14-2011 02:08 AM

Yay! I can almost varial kickflip :D
But I have major wheelbite and have a huge fear of my board snapping on me too.

STM 08-14-2011 02:33 AM

Boards don't usually snap man, it's just my one wasn't very good, nowadays they are built with grinding more in mind, if you're getting wheelbite you need to change your bushings but make sure you keep them loose so you can manoeuvre better.

Daxter King 08-14-2011 02:37 AM

Bitch, I've seen shit riding my scooter that you can't even fathom on your safe little skatey-board. I only have two wheels, you have four, if one of mine blows out, Im a dead man. You just be riding a tricycle if one of yours blows out, which it wouldn't, since skateboreds aren't extremem enough for that to happen. One time I saw a man achieve 88 MPH on a scooter, his name was George "motherufuckin" Washington and he was the first president of the US of A. Call me when you guys move past Tony Hawk and Deadmouse5.

Peace.

Mudokon_Master 08-14-2011 02:48 AM

I like to call people like you 'scooter rooter'.

Do I think skaters are cool? No, I don't. Do I think they're extreme? No, I don't. There's only one sport that is cooler than all other sports combined.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qGhv70SDFU...00/parkour.jpg

STM 08-14-2011 03:10 AM

I wanted to do parkour and free running but alas I'm too pussy.

Ridg3 08-14-2011 03:15 AM

Parkour and freerunning?

They're the one sport.

STM 08-14-2011 04:37 AM

No.
:

Wikipedia: Parkour is often mistaken for "Freerunning". They are often used interchangeably even though these terms refer to distinct disciplines. Comparatively, the aim of Parkour is to enable the practitioner to move quickly and efficiently past obstacles, while Freerunning employs creativity through the use of tricking moves such as aerial rotations and spins

Ridg3 08-14-2011 04:56 AM

Click on the 'see more' bit of that article. They are the same sport and even though they say that there is very little differences between the two, I fail to see any differences. To me it's one fluid, unencumbered motion to get from A to B.

STM 08-14-2011 05:55 AM

I think the differences are minor but are nevertheless there, parkour is more about stunts while free running is just to get somewhere as simply as is possible.

Ridg3 08-14-2011 05:57 AM

Other way around I think you mean.

Dynamithix 08-14-2011 06:01 AM

So... you only skateboard to look 'cool' for your friends? What a nice sport.

I dislike skateboarding, every time I walk to school, there's a bunch of skating fags on the way who keep screwing up the 'tricks' and they just fall down and yell 'fuck fuck oh shit broke my leg fuck' and the next 10 seconds he's up and yelling 'bro look at this look at this fuckin sick man'.

Can you be anymore dumber?

Crashpunk 08-14-2011 06:23 AM

I don't tend to think about them. If i see a good skater I'm kinda impressed with the tricks.

Parkour is more impressive to me.

JennyGenesis 08-14-2011 06:26 AM

I used to have a skateboard, it was given to me by a friend because he got a new one even though I had no interest in skateboarding. I did quite frequently use it as a means of transportation. I wasen't into performing tricks.

Dixanadu 08-14-2011 10:33 AM

I used to like laying on a skateboard then throwing myself down steep hills.

I stopped when I realised plummeting into the side of the road at high speeds is quite hazardous to one's health.

Ridg3 08-14-2011 10:37 AM

The more brave of us would stand up on the board.

STM 08-14-2011 10:52 AM

I did that then went up another hill, came off and bent my back backwards. I couldn't breath for about a minute which was quite scary.

Laser 08-14-2011 01:48 PM

The only time I ever thought about skaters is when I think..."Thank God I am not a skater, those guys are fuckwits"

Bullet Magnet 08-14-2011 01:57 PM

I'm with Nate. This isn't on my radar.

I still felt the need to log in and say that though.

Mudokon_Master 08-14-2011 09:56 PM

I got into parkouring for a bit, even though I sucked at it. Me and my friends basically just ran around the school like retards jumping over and climbing anything we could.
We got quite a lot of stares from the other students.
Apparently I was quite good at it out of my friend. But I just realized how fucking stupid it all was, I mean, running around a school jumping over shit just seemed a bit plain.
That's when I got into skating.

Ridg3 08-15-2011 11:10 AM

Were you parkouring in school to get to a designated location? If not, that's why it was boring. Parkour is >9000x better than skating.

Jordan 08-15-2011 11:13 AM

My cousin had a couple of skateboards once. We were always too pussy to ride it standing up, but we had shit loads of fun sitting on it and rolling down a big ass hill.

^ this, If I could be as good as Tony Hawks or....the world's best parkourist, I;d be the parkour bloke.

Bullet Magnet 08-15-2011 01:14 PM

Parkour + martial arts + costume = real life superhero.

Sekto Springs 08-15-2011 01:55 PM

Don't you mean "sk8rz"?

Like any youth culture - it's not the culture itself that is annoying, but the youth. I think if you can actually skateboard, you've earned your right to have a "skater" aesthetic. This isn't actually the case for most skater's I've met. They can barely ollie and suddenly they refuse to wear any apparel that isn't Vans and have accepted Bam Margera as their personal deity. Ugh.

Like any youth aesthetic based around artistic or physical talent, the actual talent takes a back seat to the "look". Same goes for body mod culture, music cultures, etc. If you're going to become invested in a lifestyle, do it because you have an affinity for it, not just because you think it looks good.

STM 08-15-2011 04:48 PM

That's why I don't do anything.

Except rugger, but even that was for my Dad for a good few years when I despised every single Sunday morning training session.

T-nex 08-16-2011 12:50 AM

I love watching parkour.... I wish I had the determination to learn it... What stops me is this general idea that being 22 is too old to really learn it. Specially since I was never big on sports in my life time...

Is anyone in favor of renaming this thread to "extreme sports"?

Crashpunk 08-16-2011 02:17 AM

I used to do Parkour when I was younger and I used to go to this group that meet up in Nottingham called 'PK Notts'. The people there were just off in a flash, up a wall, seen later jumping over buildings.

It was amazing.

I've heard of PK Notts when I was looking around to see if there were any groups. There's one in Hertfordshire but I came to the conclusion I'm too pussy, nor am I limber enough to manage running around roofs etc.

Mac Sirloin 08-16-2011 09:33 AM

I think Skaters are semi entitled to be dickish about it if they work hard. I've found myself shouting a few vocal shitiots down to size after they tried to make a snark about my riding a bike.

Mr. Bungle 08-16-2011 09:38 AM

Yeah, I don't mind skaters if they have skill to justify their seemingly badass and rebellious attitude. But most of the skaters around here don't have that, and instead try to do flashy shit that a four year old could pull off in order to look cool. Or they just stand outside Tim Hourton's on a skateboard to impress chicks. Eesh.

Strike Witch 08-17-2011 12:39 AM

He was a sk8tr boi
she said see you later boi

Mudokon_Master 08-17-2011 12:56 AM

Well skaters are rare in Australia. We mostly only get scooter rooters and bike riders.
But the skaters here are mostly decent people, and they're good at it too.
So I look up to skaters.
