Fee Co. Rail Engine

Hi there,

I've decided to model the Fee Co. Rail Engine, from Abe's Exoddus, for a portfolio piece.

I'll update this thread with my progress as I make it.

Latest progress:

Hulaabeo 05-26-2011 03:48 AM

Watch, this will go unfinished.

Good luck anyways.

Skibur 05-26-2011 03:59 AM

I look forward to proving you wrong ;)

If anyone knows of any other people who have modelled or attempted to model this train, a link to the thread would be appreciated :)

STM 05-26-2011 07:00 AM

No one who has posted their progress but I think there are images, please don't tell me you need help?

Skibur 05-26-2011 07:55 AM

Na, I scanned the relevant pages from the art book.
I was just curious to see if anyone else had tried modelling it, based on the first response I got to this thread ;)

STM 05-26-2011 10:24 AM

FC has a terrible history of unfinished projects.

Crashpunk 05-26-2011 12:34 PM

It sadly does. Let's see if you can be a first.

CrissCross 05-26-2011 11:42 PM

that will be pretty tricky :) good luck

Skibur 05-27-2011 05:37 AM

So here's the concept art and a render of what I have done so far. I can see a few things I need to fix, and there's obviously a fair bit missing.
I seem to have caught a cold, and spent most of the day next to a heater, so I didn't get much done... Hopefully I'll make decent progress tomorrow.

This is going to be a lot of work... :D

CHECK OP FOR UPDATES

Hulaabeo 05-28-2011 03:14 PM

If you got this far, I doubt it will go unfinished.

CrissCross 05-28-2011 04:08 PM

Yay +1 internets :D

Fartuess 05-29-2011 04:36 AM

looks really good. I'm a bit envy because my high poly modelling skills suck :P

T-nex 05-30-2011 01:53 AM

Wait... if you're using it for a portfolio, doesn't it kinda require you to have original art?

Manco 05-30-2011 02:07 AM

Depends on the line of work, but in the case of a 3D modelling portfolio it's probably more the technical proficiency that's being showcased.

Exactly.
What's original these days, anyway?

As far as unoriginal originality, Oddworld is as original as you can get...

As for progress on the model, I was a bit slack today, and the phallus on the head of the thing was giving me grief.

T-nex 05-31-2011 03:49 PM

I was thinking in terms of copyright and such... But what do I know... X_x

STM 05-31-2011 03:56 PM

It's non-profit so it should be fine, so long as he acknowledges all the sources.

Skibur 06-01-2011 06:30 AM

Updated the OP with the latest progress. I might power into this tomorrow and get the modelling finished. Then the fun of the low poly and texturing begins... :/

Ready to start on something else.
I'm thinking about making part of the Fee Co. Depot next. Will be a good scene to show off the train in.

STM 06-01-2011 06:45 AM

What a sexy model, keep it up man!

Crashpunk 06-02-2011 02:22 PM

This is looking pretty good so far.

please please PLEASE finish it.

Skibur 06-04-2011 07:09 AM

So, boy have I been slack these last few days...

I've put up my latest progress, and I'm just about done with the high poly. Just need to add the last of the details and then a lot more rivets and bolts etc and then I can finally move on!

Havoc 06-04-2011 07:28 AM

Damn, that looks pretty good!

GlacierDragon 06-05-2011 11:51 AM

Wow, this looks great so far. It looks very accurate compared to the original concept art, good luck in finishing it.

Skibur 06-05-2011 08:16 PM

I have basically finished the high poly, but it was 30 million tris (that's a lot), so I've been optimising it and I have it down to about 10 million. 2x turbosmooth might be nice for a gun or something, but definitely not something of this scale :P

EDIT: So there you go. High poly done, well as much as I'm prepared to do, and that my computer can handle...

Now for the low poly and texturing... This has taken longer than I thought it would.

AvengingGibbons 06-06-2011 12:11 AM

really great work skibur :D looking forward to the textured version

STM 06-06-2011 08:20 AM

If you're going all out crazy you might want to make a platform as well!!!

... carriages should take priority over a platform. A train has no meaning if it has no carriages :)

Skibur 06-06-2011 04:39 PM

Ha! I've thought about making both, but I haven't even finished this thing completely yet, and when I do I will probably be quite over it ;)

STM 06-08-2011 03:16 AM

I can understand that.

brechtos 06-11-2011 01:35 AM

Very nice work!! Going to make an excellent portfolio piece. Would you mind uploading a wireframe of the model?

Skibur 06-11-2011 02:16 AM

I'm just finishing off the last part of the low poly and unwrapping now. I'll post everything, including wires, when I finish the texturing.

:)

Skibur 06-13-2011 07:48 AM

Looks like I can't edit the OP any more, so I'll post the latest right here!

Here's a shot of the low poly with normal and ambient occlusion maps, the same with wireframe overlay, and the beginnings of a diffuse texture!

The wires show that quite a few parts aren't as optimised as they could be, but I see this as probably being a pretty important part of a game environment, the player might even ride on it at some point, so I think the detail is necessary.
Normal and AO map need some manual fixing, and the diffuse is going to need a lot of love, but I'm excited to get this finished and looking great!

I'm loving this thing so much. :D

mlg man 06-13-2011 08:10 AM

That is incredible! Oddworld should hire you for there HD Remakes. :)

brechtos 06-13-2011 10:21 AM

Nice job. Edge flow looks fine to. Perhaps those doors could have been as stand alone objects instead of cutouts in the actual main body? Unless you want them to open ofcourse :). Looking forward to seeing the final texture.

Fartuess 06-13-2011 01:27 PM

Could you give some highpoly wireframes?

Btw. I see some baking errors on normal maps :P

Skibur 06-13-2011 04:36 PM

The doors are stand alone and yes, there are unfortunately plenty of baking errors that I need to fix up...

enchilado 06-13-2011 04:41 PM

Wow, though. It's looking amazing.

Havoc 06-14-2011 01:42 AM

Looking great! Keep it up!

Oddey 06-16-2011 12:34 PM

That... That's pretty damn awesome looking.

lloyd 06-17-2011 07:23 AM

Looking good! :D
