Sports...Do you partake or watch?

Any one play sport here? Or watch, or hate? Discuss.

I played Rugby for a total of 12-13 years now at two different clubs. Lordy me, just started again and realised I actually have a fair bit of pace...only I also have the stamina of a panda. And I guess that isn't much.

Havoc 05-12-2011 12:05 PM

Partake in sports? You must be joking?

Okay, I just work out. No actual team sports or anything that requires you to run over an actual field instead of a threadmill.

STM 05-12-2011 12:06 PM

I do both, I am going to the gym again but I do crunches at home until I can get a membership. But I haven't been to a gym for nine months so I won't be able to bench shit, then again I only need to do stamina work so meh.

Wings of Fire 05-12-2011 12:08 PM

I used to do HEMA and I'm looking to get back into kendo next year.

STM 05-12-2011 12:14 PM

I really wanted to do kendo but I didn't want to travel miles for the club. =( seems fun.

Wings of Fire 05-12-2011 12:15 PM

It is fun, but like fencing or really anything involving a weapon it's way waaaaaaayyyy harder than it looks.

Also armour is fucking expensive, which is the reason why I quit first time round.

STM 05-12-2011 12:23 PM

I did fencing once and won one out of the two tourneys so I wasn't great but Kendo seems, in my humble opinion, more interesting, a fight can last seconds or ten minutes!

Did you not get the armour free with the club though? Or like a one of payment? Seems funny they'd make you cash out so much.

It's actually better for you to run a field than it is on a treadmill. More air resistance for you to push through.

I used to be really health conscious and still am a little bit. My main sport was Kickboxing and I'm currently sitting on Brown Belt 1st Dan for the last three years. I'm considering going back so I can get my Black in it but my flexibility is shot now so if I want to do it, intense fucking training is ahead of me.

I also used to play basketball and I used to play it well but I gave up on that because I didn't really enjoy playing for a team, I'd play it now-a-days if it was a one on one or two-on-two with one net.

And no, you have to pay for the gear because it is so expensive, but you buy it through the club so you'll get their discount on it.

STM 05-12-2011 12:26 PM

Street basket ball is fun, I entered a tourney for that too but everyone else was 6'4+ and black so I was pretty beat.

MeechMunchie 05-12-2011 01:14 PM

Swim, Gym, keeps me slim.

Also a bit of Rugby, but that doesn't rhyme. Plus I walk everywhere.

But I despise televised sports. Either play it yourself or do something more constructive.

Crashpunk 05-12-2011 01:29 PM

I don't like a sports, Football is the worst. I can't stand how the players get paid so much money to kick a ball around for 90 minutes.

The only sport I do is Parkour which also known as Freerunning. Its fun to see what you can do in diffrent locations and you don't have to buy specal equipment to do it.

JennyGenesis 05-12-2011 01:34 PM

I hate sports. But I like to watch motorsports. I dont know if that counts.

Wil 05-12-2011 01:54 PM

I'm a runner traditionally, but I haven't done any since school, more because of the effort of putting on some trainers and heading outside than anything else. I did go to the gym for a few months last year, but I didn't gain any weight, so I quit.

Other than that, the only exercise I've had in the past five years has been walking and dance.

Watching sport? Couldn't give the vaguest of tosses.

Wow. Does your uni have a kendo club? I'm hoping to pick that up next year; it looks cool. How long did you do it for?

Maxy, are you still in the swing dance club? I remember there was a video of you all dancing, you were really good. :)

I used to be really sporty as a kid but then I became an awkward teen... Ah well. But I'm going to take up the gym over the summer, my immune system is rubbish and I'm hoping some regular exercise should help it improve.

I don't usually like televised sports but I do enjoy the superbowl. It's just so big and loud and unBritish-y, I think it's really interesting.

Only a few months I'm afraid, the cost of armour and the fact I was also in a medieval club which taught more diverse weapons techniques killed my enthusiasm. Plus the fact I was shit at getting up for practice.

And yeah. Our university has clubs for most things.

Awww, thank you! Yep, still in it, although I won't be once I graduate. Hopefully I'll still be able to find some classes and socials wherever I end up.

Nemo 05-12-2011 05:11 PM

I like to play tennis, but that's about the only real sport that I'm any good at. I used to fool myself into thinking I was good at baseball, but thinking back, I don't think I've ever actually scored a hit.

Steamer_KING 05-12-2011 05:30 PM

I practice Shotokan Karate for, around, 15 years and played basketball for 4 years. I also like to go to the gym and just mainly swimming and running without clubs or associations. But since now I'm in University, I don't do these things as much as I'd like.

Watching sports? No thanks, too boring.

Mudokon_Master 05-12-2011 06:06 PM

I've never taken part in sport, and I never am. Not interested. I eat a shitload of food everyday and I post on here everyday and I'm as skinny as a freaking stick.
Is there something wrong with me?
Oh, right, I'm posting from school again O.o

Nate 05-12-2011 06:15 PM

I go to the gym and ride my bike.

Other than that, I don't really like sports. I was always way too uncoordinated to be any good and I'm not by nature a competitive person. Also, I really don't understand the point of spectating other people doing sport.

Mudokon_Master 05-12-2011 06:20 PM

That's also me, I have abs to impress the ladies:)

Phylum 05-12-2011 06:42 PM

I'm too afraid of injuring my arm or face and not being able to play my flute to partake in sport. I considered kendo for a while, but I soon decided to put my flute first.

Mudokon_Master 05-12-2011 06:59 PM

Wow, that is so nerd O.o
I must admit, even I don't play the flute.

I watch football a lot.

I play FIFA a lot.

MMMHMMM

CrissCross 05-12-2011 08:25 PM

Dynamithix 05-12-2011 08:44 PM

I don't really have a hobby, but I swim a lot in the summer. At least once every day. It's fun!

Mudokon_Master 05-12-2011 09:21 PM

I hate the water. It's always cold for me, even in the summer.

Dipstikk 05-12-2011 10:46 PM

SWEATY MEN HUGGING EACH OTHER? I AM SO IN THAT I AM IN.

Mudokon_Master 05-12-2011 10:52 PM

I seem to remember having this conversation about rugby and men hugging eachother in the mud a while back.

Rex Tirano 05-12-2011 11:40 PM

Mudokon_Master, there's nothing nerdy about playing the flute.

I get really bored swimming lengths, I wish I had the patience because it's really good for you.

Aww. Are you sure they won't let you be sneaky? ^_^;; Any idea where you'll probably end up? Are swing classes popular, d'you know?

My uni has very little clubs avaliable, and anything that happens to be abit different (like cayaking or snowboarding) costs alot. Snowboarding cost £25 per session, and you still had to get your own equipment and my friend spent over £200 getting enough equipment for cayaking. I joined Mountineering (rock climbing and outdoorsy stuff) but I couldn't afford the climbing shoes that were about £60 so I stopped going.

I can always show up in Sheffield classes, in fact I hope to, because I've got loads of friends here. But because I'll either be in Norwich or, hopefully, Leeds, it'll take some travel. But it's ok, there's swing dance classe in both places. But Leeds is better. :D

I'm too afraid of injuring my arm or face and not being able to play my flute to partake in sport. I considered kendo for a while, but I soon decided to put my flute first.

I'm wondering would sport help with your breathing to be able to play wind instruments better or would that make you use the wrong breathing technique?

Mudokon_Master 05-13-2011 03:05 AM

I think the way you play the flute, you need to have some really nice lip muscles ... I'm not sure how much breathing has to do with it ...

Ridg3 05-13-2011 03:08 AM

Ah right, so you kiss the flute to make music. Sorry for asking silly questions.

Mudokon_Master 05-13-2011 03:09 AM

All is forgiven Ridg:)
No but seriously, my old music teacher told me something weird like that.

Phylum 05-13-2011 04:13 AM

You require both good breathing and embouchure to play any woodwind or brass instrument well. The flute embouchure is harder to get right than most woodwinds. It also requires fine control of the lip muscles, which is why flautists make good kissers.

Anything that improves your general fitness is good for playing any instrument. It in no way hinders your breathing – if it did, idly breathing would too.

I completely forgot that I go 10-pin bowling in a league once a week.

metroixer 05-13-2011 11:09 AM

I used to do competitive swimming but dropped out recently when I realized that children that are 5 years younger than me can swim faster than me due to ridiculous training programs. I'm gonna start swimming just for the sake of being fit when university starts for me, until then it's just been a lot of long walks with the dog and skimboarding. I can't stand running, I have a case of spaghetti legs so when I do something as simple as jogging they just flail all over the place.

I like watching hockey
