The Great Odd Race

I just thought of an idea that someone probably thought of before, but I'm going to propose it anyway. How about a race to see who can beat AO the fastest? I mean, I assume some people here have it for the PC, or at least a PS1 emulator. And I'm sure some people kind find a way of "obtaining" FRAPS. So we could all record it and I could use my amazing (mediocre) editing abilities to put all of them together, switching from peoples' viewpoints. Maybe the people from the race, or at least some, could commentate over the footage? Just a stupid idea from a stupid person, but I'm sure that there are some intelligent mods or admins here that could help.

OANST 01-26-2011 12:19 PM

How about a race to Lorne Lanning's house?

STM 01-26-2011 12:29 PM

Too late, am posting from his wardrobe now.

skittlesaretasty 01-26-2011 12:35 PM

So I guess you guys don't take anything seriously around here? You can just say it's a bad idea and Necrum it, instead of semi-trolling.

STM 01-26-2011 12:39 PM

To be honest, I don't think this will generate any real interest...then again I'm a stingy git so don't take my word for it.

Are you.....crying?

STM 01-26-2011 12:52 PM

Shh, be nice OANST, so what if he is?

skittlesaretasty 01-26-2011 01:44 PM

*wipes tears* NO!!!

I don't cry........

Xavier 01-26-2011 02:34 PM

Guys, keep it clean and stay on topic.

Some people don't however some do. like me for example, I'm interested in a race. Only that I would like it so its not the whole game because it would take too long, just up to a certain point of it
And no, this isn't a bad idea at all.

Xavier 01-27-2011 02:40 AM

I think a race per level could be good.

I think a race per level could be good.

It could happen in stages, like the Tour de France.

MeechMunchie 01-27-2011 03:08 AM

At first I was going to say that since there are plenty of speedruns out there already we'd be unlikely to be able to improve on their times, but Xavier's idea has me intrigued.

Since it's naturally easier to memorise, perfect and execute a perfect run of one path than an entire game, I think together we could set a new record.

Phylum 01-27-2011 03:51 AM

If we were all trying, we could set quite a few sequential records.

leocrow 01-27-2011 09:32 AM

Including the hidden levels?
Although the problem would be that if a different person does each different level, they would have to use the level select option, thus making the boards showing bad numbers. That's a very minor problem but it is annoying

Crashpunk 01-27-2011 09:36 AM

We wouldn't save any Mudokons in the race so there isn't any need to the hidden/secret levels

Elmatto753 01-27-2011 12:33 PM

This could be interesting. I'd compete, if only I had a recording device. And my game worked consistently.

Mr. Bungle 01-27-2011 08:42 PM

I'd join in on the fun, but I'm not very good at playing games quickly.

Phylum 01-27-2011 11:34 PM

I can't run games and recording software at the same time without a framerate below 5.

leocrow 01-27-2011 11:58 PM

Not saving any muds? Then, i believe i can join!

Crashpunk 01-28-2011 12:54 AM

I am not too fast on AO. if it was AE then i'll be a lot better (Know the game better)

Xavier 01-28-2011 01:18 AM

Well I think we could have two categories, one with mud saving, and the other without any unnecessary mud saving.

GlukkonGluk 01-28-2011 12:36 PM

Switching to different perspectives wouldn't be a good idea without commentary- it would just be the same thing: Abe running along and (presumably) not dying. And if there was commentary, it would have to be interesting stuff. Other than that, you might have something here :)

skittlesaretasty 01-28-2011 12:41 PM

Where is there NECESSARY mud saving?

EDIT: And obviously commentary would be there!

A couple of times when saving muds opens doors. Happens in Exoddus too.

LDG519 01-28-2011 02:20 PM

although there are many speedruns for AO and AE there isn't any runs for MO (except mine : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiwOcwQhp_I) although I think I should probably make a new one as I'm talking all through this one

Xavier 01-30-2011 03:53 AM

I'm starting to think this thing could be very entertaining if correctly handled.

What kind of program do you guys recommend for the recording?

MeechMunchie 01-30-2011 03:56 AM

http://camstudio.org/

Wins over the more popular Fraps for simplicity of interface.

Phylum 01-30-2011 04:07 AM

I have Camtasia 2.0 registered on my computer. If you can handle a low framerate I may enter.

NovaMan 01-30-2011 08:12 AM

http://www.bbsoftware.co.uk is the best one.

Mudokon_Master 02-02-2011 09:57 PM

So this could be a really good idea! I'd say we can all use recorders to suit our computers. Some of us can handle FRAPS and some can only handle Camstudio. It's all the same and I'd really like to participate this it sounds fun. I hope we don't all forget about this.

Can it record games in Full-Screen?

It can't record games in Full-Screen.
Use DxWnd over oddworld for getting window mode.
And then you can record the window mode. 640x480

LDG519 02-05-2011 02:13 PM

will this be using glitches? if so you can use the ledge trick in feeco to bypass the security and head strait for soulstorm brewery, theres a secret area just under the set of electric fences blocking soulstorm brewery, use the ledge trick to get in early and then come up on the other side of the fences, it would give the abes exoduss run a record time

Elmatto753 02-05-2011 02:18 PM

Glitch exploitation would most likely result in disqulification.

moxco 02-05-2011 02:55 PM

How do you know it is a glitch? I mean you can't prove it.

this glitch allows you to climb down through the floor at any point, I'm pretty sure it can be said to be a glitch.

I don't think the use of glitches should result in disqualification, using the cheat codes and or some sort of cheat engine would but if it is some thing that absalutely everyone with the game can do without putting in a code or accessing a cheat engine then I don't see why it should be invalid

Xavier 02-06-2011 06:15 AM

Because it's not how the game was meant to be played?

skittlesaretasty 02-06-2011 10:52 AM

I also do not think that there should be glitches used.

that's fair
