Cars

Right. After Nate completely back-handed me for making the 'anything' thread, I began my annual Nate murdering dreams, one involving repeatedly running him over with a red 'n' green car, the 'moron mobile' if you will. And then I started wondering if anyone here actually owned a car themselves. So, here's a thread for boasting about cars, specifically ones you own. Nate may do nothing for this is a valid subject.

BEGIN!

Nemo 01-24-2011 10:19 PM

You have no right telling Nate what he can or can't do as you do not have any power on the forum, regardless of whether or not this is a valid thread.

Nate 01-24-2011 10:30 PM

I have no car, ever since my last one died in a horrible cloud of smoke three years ago.

MarsMudoken 01-24-2011 10:32 PM

See, if I were Nate, I could kill you for an off-topic post. Look, I don't like the guy, so just shut your trap and talk about cars, it's not that hard.

EDIT: Nate came in here while I was typing, and I gained immense satisfaction knowing that his personal, possibly expensive, property was destroyed horribly. Jolly good.

enchilado 01-24-2011 11:09 PM

Probably getting a learner driver's license tomorrow (if I pass the test)... then I might save up for a car.

MarsMudoken 01-24-2011 11:15 PM

Good for you! If you pass, I'll give you a waffle!

Strike Witch 01-24-2011 11:34 PM

Topic Closed.

MarsMudoken 01-24-2011 11:37 PM

Much as your dreams are justifiable, no change has befallen said topic. Your efforts are in vain.

DarkHoodness 01-24-2011 11:55 PM

I want a car soonish... I hope to get my driving lessons done this year, before they put even more restrictions on it. I'm waiting for this to come out:

Gordon Murray T.25 info (link)

Crash Test results (Link)

Why do I want such a small, slow, ugly car?

The trouble with travel is that public transport in the UK is stupidly overpriced for what it is, and they keep rising the damned prices (£5 to go 8 miles on the train?! Are they stupid??). I actually would like to cycle everywhere, but because of the bad attitude towards cyclists by motorists, and the fact that there are barely any safe cycle paths, let alone a decent cycling infrastructure, makes cycling unsafe (I've lost count of the near-misses I've had with cars even when using cycle paths - It's not funny anymore!).

Fuel prices are rising through the roof, and set to rise even further (I heard a rumour that peak oil may even have already happened, but it's just a rumour), so I want a vehicle that's as fuel efficient as possible. Mopeds and motorbikes can carry less than a bicycle, and are unsafe. If what they say about this car is true, the running cost of the petrol version of this thing may even be cheaper than public transport.

Plus another advantage is that it won't have used as many resources to build as a conventional car, and most of the parts are easily replaceable due to its design, unlike most cars. Here's to hoping this way of building cars gets off the ground, and that this will be the future of motoring (other, larger cars can be built in the same resource-saving way).

Crashpunk 01-25-2011 03:57 AM

MarsMudoken? you returned? Fuck

also I'm not driving for a while. There isn't any point.

List of things you have to fork out for:
  • Lessons
  • License
  • Test
  • Car
  • Petrol
  • Insurance
  • Road Tax
  • M.O.T.
  • Stupid repairs
If you happen to crash into someone
  • Stupidly high insurance after claim.

I may have left out some things, but I'm not including any types of fines you'll get for speeding or bad parking. And you car will vary on how much fuel it chows down on and you'll most likely by a starter car which will om nom nom your wallet.

Paying for public transport is a hell of a lot cheaper than owning a car and owning a car has only a few upsides; you don't need to share with stupid, smelly people and you have the luxury to fuck off to wherever you wish at your own convenience.

And by the way, five quid for eight miles is actually not that expensive.

Dixanadu 01-25-2011 06:04 AM

I hate cars.

Dynamithix 01-25-2011 06:13 AM

I don't have a car. Though, my age might have something to do with it.

STM 01-25-2011 08:33 AM

I have a car...a toy car, it's a wind up. Nah but I'm getting a moped then a bike if anything.

OANST 01-25-2011 08:35 AM

I was going to buy Nate a new car, but now that I know how much Mars hates him, I'm not going to. Take that, Nate. Maybe next time you won't be so mean to Mars.

Havoc 01-25-2011 09:02 AM

Current car:

OANST 01-25-2011 09:17 AM

That's the car that I was going to buy Nate.

Havoc 01-25-2011 09:21 AM

You can buy it for me?

OANST 01-25-2011 09:24 AM

Does Mars like you?

Havoc 01-25-2011 09:25 AM

I certainly hope so.

OANST 01-25-2011 09:31 AM

Get him to write you a letter of reference.

And by the way, five quid for eight miles is actually not that expensive.

Ultimately I'll never get what I want from transport - It's all about compromises.

Public transport annoys me because it can't always get me where I want to go, or if it does, I often have to wait hours to traverse such short distances. It used to be a lot cheaper too, and now I'm paying twice as much or more for exactly the same sub-standard service, while the prices and restrictions continue to rise. It isn't worth its value by a long, long way, when it used to be, I find that unacceptable.

Cycling is cheap and gets me where I want (sometimes even quicker than public transport), but as I said earlier it sacrifices safety for convenience, since there isn't much of a separate infrastructure for bikes, and they don't mix with cars on roads that aren't designed for them.

I realise a car would be more expensive in the long run, and yes there are rising prices and restrictions too, but at least I'll be getting what I pay for since it's private transport that can get me, a passenger, and some luggage, anywhere I want where there is a road, and exactly when I want.

I feel driving lessons are more of an investment in a skill rather than an expense. Most jobs where I live seem to want their applicants to have a driving licence and a car, probably because public transport here sucks.

If the T.25 does what they say it'll do, it should be cheaper to run than a standard car, due to its low price (£6500), it's high fuel efficiency (90-100 MPG, approx. 5p-7p a mile on fuel to run), the way it's built (components are designed to be easily and cheaply replaceable and serviceable), its weight (lightweight reduces component wear), its size (it's tiny with one of the smallest turning circles ever, it should be easy to park), it won't cost me road tax, and also it should, in theory, be cheap to insure (but since it's not comparable to any other car on the market today, not even those shitty SMART things, I can't get an accurate quote).

http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1295987197

Still expensive, but it seems like a pretty damned practical transport compromise to me, and well worth its value. I'm hoping it's as good as they say it'll be.

Havoc 01-25-2011 11:56 AM

Are you seriously considering driving one of those monstrosities? How can you take yourself seriously as a man when you own one of those things?

I don't see cars as a status symbol - They're a tool. And I want my tools to be as practical and efficient as possible (did you see the vid I posted earlier?). If it's as good as they say, I'll be able to take myself seriously because I know I would have made a practical choice for myself.

MA 01-25-2011 02:01 PM

NO YOU'RE LESS OF A MAN

OddjobAbe 01-25-2011 02:02 PM

I don't own a car anymore. I crashed it around Christmas in 2009 because of black ice. The car got written off. Luckily, I was not injured. I didn't like it much anyway, though. It was just a way to get to and from work and the pub.

Phylum 01-25-2011 03:09 PM

MA doesn't need a car. He can drive a goddamn forklift.

I'm turning 16 in a year-and-a-bit, so that would be the earliest I'd consider a car.

Dixanadu 01-25-2011 03:41 PM

Just stick with a horse and carriage. It's free, requires no fuel, and is waaay more fun.

Requires no fuel? What do you call hay then?

Phylum 01-25-2011 04:26 PM

Free? Do you know how much it costs to maintain a horse?

Until you get in an accident or, god forbid, catch a gust of wind.

Nate 01-26-2011 01:20 AM

"It it's as good as they say," neither of those things will be a problem. Did you bother to watch the video?

An attractive car is not necessarily a safe car.

Havoc 01-26-2011 03:14 AM

No, but bigger cars generally are. When that small car is involved in a multicar pileup, they won't find it until they pull the wrecks apart :P

Straw.

Straw.

no. hay.

its a bit like prolonged use of red diesel in a standard diesel car. eventually, one way or another, you'll regret doing it. people say it doesn't do anything but save you money, others say the higher sulphur content will eventually fuck your car over. personally, i believe the latter.

True, but like I said, it's a compromise. The alternative for me is cycling or a scooter - I think I'm better off in this thing. (Crash test results again) At least I probably won't get killed in 30 MPH collisions...

Don't forget the time it'll eat up to maintain and look after the animal, the vets bills, the fact that you can't leave it alone for a few days like with other pets unless you stable it (expensive) or get someone to look after it for you - Horses generally need more than straw as food, too. :P And you still have the problem of roads not being designed for horses and carts and that they don't mix with cars, like how roads aren't designed for cyclists.

metroixer 01-26-2011 05:02 PM

I drive a ford focus ZX3, 2003 model I believe. Funny thing is that it's manual, and I was never taught or expected to drive a stick until my parents found it at a good price.

It's ok, it's a nice flashy yellow so it's easy to spot out. I already got rear ended, which ended as a hit and run to my dismay, among other issues. But I guess if you're first car isn't a total wreck that you have to fix every couple of months, how else would you get the experience for newer ones?

Drinking and driving isn't cool.

OddjobAbe 01-27-2011 08:09 AM

If I got dunk, I walked. In fact, somebody had let the tyres down once when I walked back in the morning to pick it up. That was a real hassle.
