Doing an LP of the whole OddBox
 

Hey there! I've decided to start a Let's Play of the OddBox! If you don't know what a Let's Play is, it's kinda like a walkthrough, except I sit there and talk as I play, pretty much to be annoying or so you can hear me cry when I get to hard parts. If anyone would like to come watch, just visit my channel in my signature! You don't have to subscribe if you don't want to, but I'd appreciate some feedback on the LP. I'm starting it right now, so the first parts should be uploaded by the end of today or tomorrow afternoon. Thanks for reading, and I hope you will come and watch! Advertising leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but I still want you guys from OWF to watch, at least you will appreciate OddWorld.

I think I could watch an LP done by you; I imagine each and every video would be wall-to-wall commentary on Oddworld facts, speculation, and the latest from Lorne's Facebook.

Yeah, you should do it! I just want to hear all of the stuff you know about OddWorld, because I'm sure it's a ridiculous amount :D

Quantity does not equal quality but it's on youtube so I guess it doesn't matter.

The watermark is because I upload walkthroughs for GameAnyone.com, and they require the watermarks. Also, there is no voice audio on the Spore let's play because it's NOT a let's play, it is a mini-walkthrough, And the 3 parts of NWN that you viewed don't have voice because I didn't have my mic on, if you actually would read before commenting. Finally, I have 3 LPs going on at once because I don't want to sit and play one game for hours. I like variety.

I too like variety. I have 2 at the moment, Half-Life 2 and Minecraft (which is finished pretty much) and i plan on doing Abe's Exoddus like I said and Pokemon Gold.
If you can upload more then one LP with Equally good quality you'll be fine.

And because he forgot the second asterisk, and everyone knows without both of them the magical transformation from text to action can not take place.

If you had no microphone on, why didn't you redo the videos? I will give you the spore thing, I kinda just glaze through walkthrough and automatically assume "LP" these days.

Enough about that though, let's take a look at the oddboxx lp!

Well, 30 seconds in you talk about how your recording equipment wasn't working and how ~boss~ you are at taking care of it. I would have paid more attention, but that FRAPS FPS counter keeps blinking and let me tell you that sure is distracting. I say, if I had no idea what this game was I would be pretty confused right now!

What the, did you SERIOUSLY skip through the whole opening cutscene? Like, to give people that don't know anything about the game at least SOME context as to what's going on? Awesome. "don't know why I skipped the cutscene but whatever" cause re-recording those precious 50 seconds would have been so hard.

So, I'm at 1:45, and you STILL haven't started the game. You are instead fiddling around with the controls and your emulator memory, fucking fascinating. It's not like you could have done this off screen or something, I guess you're too boss. I will give you credit for fixing the loud game sound.

Also, I thought let's plays were supposed to have commentary? I mean, maybe I'm just weird but saying "Crap goddamnit!" over and over doesn't really count.

But hey! It's the first video, everyone makes mistakes, let's look at your newest one, part 3.

Part 3 starts off abruptly, apparently you died? It's good for the viewer to have a bit of a short introduction over where you are and what's going on. By short I mean 10 seconds, that's not too much right? Better than to leave us guessing over what the hell just happened. Also that FRAPS counter is still there, why don't you turn that off!?

Are you playing this blind? As in, you've never played Oddysee before? Cause you don't seem to have any idea on what you're doing. While it's humorous to watch someone mess up on a bonus due to a surprise slig the first time, it all gets kind of redundant. I love the tongue noises you start making by the way, it really feels like I'm in your mouth (that's the point of these videos right????)

So I skip ahead to 3 minutes and you're STILL at that secret, buddy, haven't you heard of a thing called editing? I don't care if you use windows movie maker, or camstudio, or virtualdub, or sony vegas, just cut out all that shit! We get it, you're awful at the game! We've seen enough of your failures, now show us your success! Well.... At least not for that secret because you apparently gave up... Why did you bother to leave all that in then?

Halfway through, and I'm just about bored to tears, you're spending far too long on one of the easiest puzzles in the game (two slig patrols and having to blow one up) and at this point I'm just skipping around the video. You have nothing interesting to say, you are awful at the game and it is not LOL FUNY to watch, and if this is what gameanyone.com wants, well quite frankly their standards are shockingly low!

Are you sure that's a let's play? Because that sounds like a guy sitting there reading a wiki on the game as he plays, instead of enjoying the game. That's why I don't edit, because I think that a let's play is supposed to give someone the experience that the person has while playing it. Last time I checked, I don't sit here and read wiki pages as I play, and I certainly can't magically poof past all of my deaths. Parts 1, 2, and 3 are 1 part split into 10 minutes so that I could use it on GameAnyone, which is why part 3 starts abruptly. It's not blind, but I haven't played the game since I was about 7. I don't care what your opinion is. There are 370+ people who like my let's plays, which isn't much, but one person who doesn't like them does not affect me at all. I would appreciate if you used constructive criticism, though, instead of being a fucking asshole about it.

EDIT: Also, I didn't redo the 3 NWN parts because nobody complained about it. They asked why it didn't have voice, I told them, and it was fine.

Another thing, if you are talking this much you must be the greatest fucking thing to happen to the let's playing community since FRAPS, so where are your awesome LPs that are perfect? Could I have a link?

See, I don't think you understand the point I'm trying to make here. Let's play videos were started for the reason of showing off a game, or to have a viewer who has played a game learn about new tricks from the game. Barring that, a let's play tends to be more humorous full of witty drunken (not required) antics that entertain everyone.

Your videos are neither of those, you are not informative. You are not funny. Your videos are boring.

If you think me being blunt about it is being a fucking asshole, well....

Ask yourself this, if you were a random viewer, and you ran into your videos. Would you really watch them to the fullest? Would you yourself watch a guy on the internet die over and over who doesn't have anything interesting to say?

Also, I'm afraid I came off the wrong way. I'm not tearing apart your videos for the sake of being mean. I'm doing it because I care about oddworld, I know you care about oddworld, and the last thing oddworld needs is someone to look at a video and go "wow, this game looks really dumb and unfairly hard."

Just... a bad first impression you know? It's also why the guy who sounds like he's reading a wiki (he's really not honest!) is doing oddworld the way he does, because he cares about it.

I was hoping to have guests from here on the whole OddBox LP, but since everyone didn't take my other topic seriously, I knew that nobody would be a guest, because I need help with the oddworld knowledge. If you know anyone who would want to be on, TELL THEM TO MESSAGE ME.

How are you suggesting a guest-spot would work out?

Over a Skype call using Skype screen sharing. I've done this with many LPers before on their LPs and also my LPs.

I would be a guest if ya like. I love Oddworld and I do LPs and other Oddworld Videos.

Using "I have subscribers" as a measurement of quality AND using "well let's see YOU do better" as an argument.

Just to say, yes I do let's plays.

I do, however, acknowledge that it is a dumb as hell hobby and those that I have made have there very own issues, and I work to fixing them. Also, when I started let's playing myself, I, too, got ripped apart for how terrible everything I did was. I sucked it up, I learned from it, I'm much better because of it.

So, yeah.

the fuck are you talking about? that's a totally different scenario. they are being paid to make good food. its their job and responsibility. if they aren't doing their job, they aren't earning their pay and you have every right to punch them in the face.

on the other hand, i don't believe this person is being paid to make LP's. it isn't their job, and they are not responsible for any tantrums people may throw. its something they do out of their own free will, and they do not need to make them to anyone's specifications. if you don't like them, stick it up your arse. if you're going to rip them apart instead of being constructive, be prepared for them to ask for your own amazing shit.

bad commentary and why it is bad

See, the thing is Xavier says it's always good to have more oddworld on the web. I totally agree with that. Yet, if it's putting oddworld in a bad light, what good is it going to do?

Sure, you're not being paid, but is that an excuse to just put crap on the internet and call it good?

You were being constructive, but a constructive asshole. Like a construction worker that does cat calls but gets the job done in the end. And the FRAPS counter can't be helped. Or the commentary for that matter, until I get guests.

EDIT: And MA, are you saying they should shove their computers up their asses, or my Let's Plays? Because, the LPs already stink enough, and shit stains won't help.

Being free doesn't excuse bad quality - no, he's not getting paid for it, but he should still be aiming to produce a high quality video series, and learning from criticism is a part of that.

And no matter what, being a critic doesn't require you to be an accomplished expert at what you're criticising.

Him being an asshole doesn't mean you can ignore him.

You can disable the FRAPS counter.

You shouldn't have to rely on guests to improve your commentary; the core issue is you. Try cutting out unnecessary footage, so you don't end up running out of things to say.
