Artists...
I think there was a thread made eons ago by Lady Elum, but I couldn't be bothered dredging it up. I know there are a few people here who enjoy art, so who are some of your favorite artists or designers? A favorite of mine is Mark Ryden, he has some really cool looking art. Here are some examples of his work:
http://www.markryden.com/images/gall.../boyblue31.jpg Detail: http://www.markryden.com/images/gall.../boyblue31.jpg http://www.markryden.com/images/gall...arge/birth.jpg http://www.markryden.com/images/gall...rge/corkey.jpg Go to www.markryden.com for more. I enjoy Heironymous Bosch, Brett Whiteley and some of Van Gough. As for designers, David Carson has some really nice stuff, and of course there's the obvious Andy Warhol. |
That artist is cool. I like drawings with freaky stuff in them, like those ones.
|
i UNDERSTAND THE FIRST AND LAST ONE, BUT THE SECOND ONE LOST ME...
I like any art, artists have different ways of viewing things, the fun part is trying to see things their way |
Eeeww, weird!
I like...Rach, Claudia, Em, Abby, Akya, and everyone else who does art here. I don't know any other artists names, but I did like most of the stuff at the Tate Modern. |
Wow. I wish I could draw like that. I haven't gotten to see very many pictures here, because it takes my computer half an hour to load the pictures!
|
Hey great pictures. My favorite Artist Doug Chiang. He is a concept artist who works at ILM. He works on the Star Wars movies. I think his art is spectacular. Mann I can't wait to become a concept artist.
|
Very wird buttt............VERY COOL
 |
Wow, those paintings are really beautiful! I don't really have a favourite artist [I'm a little uncultured when it comes to Art, I'm afraid] but I like to think I can appreciate good art when I see it. I might be wrong, of course...
|
the first one is wierd and the second is just plain disturbing... in a good way of course. the second one lost me as well :confuzzled:
oh yeah forgot to say favorite artists... Julie Dillon. and the other ones are on this forum. [ December 07, 2001: Message edited by: Kroenig the Glukkon ] |
Yeah, I really like Mark Ryden. I didn't think any one would start a topic about him, as he is fairly obscure... he is definetly one of my favorite pop/surrealism artists. There is also an art book called "The Art of Mark Ryden: Anima Mundi" full of his art. Very good book.
As for other artists, I love surrealism. Dali is a big favorite of mine. I also like Bosch, Van Gough, H.R Giger, Buniel, Andy Warhol, and many others. Another cool artist is Dave McKean, who designed some amazing photography and illustrations for some of Niel Gaiman's graphic novels. mmm... art... |
I have about three favorite artists, excluding our own members that are extremely talented artists: Goldenwolf, Sidian Silverhawke, and ShadowWolf.
(This may take awhile) First is Goldenwolf. She's an excellent were/furre/wolf artist. All of her drawings are clean, and totally amazing. I've admired her art for quite some time now. Here's a sample of her work: http://www.goldenwolfen.com/myart/2001/gryphons.jpg http://www.goldenwolfen.com Another artist that I absolutely adore is Sidian Silverhawke. Sidian is a fellow dragon/were dragon, but something that makes her unique is that she only has one eye in real life. Her artwork shows no signs of this, however, and she never fails to amaze me. Erk, her site is down, I'll post something of her's when it's back up. Lastly, a friend of mine whose art is amazing. ShadowWolf has her own cool little wolfie style that makes her pics stand out. (Let's see if this works) http://www.side7.com/art/shadwolf/IceMoon2.jpg She did this one for me of my character Ice Moon (yes, that is a wolf with a long mane ;) ) |
I don't really have a favorite artist either, but I do love to draw. Thats parcticly all I do in my free time. If I had to choose a favorite artist I would have to say Leanardo Davinche, I love to look at his inventions think to myself about how far ahead of his times his inventions where.

?
Erm.................... that pic.................
|
I wonder why I haven't posted here yet...
Anywho, my fave artist (of "real" museum art) is Xu Bing who makes brilliant artwork out of the chinese alphabet, and invented square caligraphy. |

No offense but I find these pictures to be very abstract as well as very disturbing, my favorite artists are ones who paint or draw still life or the famous impressionists, and ones who have the actual ability to draw........
|
Art is more along based with creating what doesn't exist, thats of the powers. True, those look different then what most of us tink about, but can't you accept and aknowledge the skill involved? Who cares if they look creepy and scary, the're of the mind and show no boudries on what things can actualy be, and I think those pictures were actualy drawn (and ones who have the actual ability to draw........) I'm taking it as you didn't think the pictures posted here were made with people that had the ability to daw.
|
Personally I do not think these people had the actual, natural talent to draw so they resort to more abstract and other ways to express. This is not neccessarily bad but I think a good artists needs both, and I like an artists who shows they have both, and I admire artists that are like this.......It is not an attack against them though.....
|
Art is the artists view, what may seem cruse or disguesting to you maybe a masterpiec to someone else. You may have to look at it from other perspectives, to see the true picture.

Murphy, could you name some artists that you like? |
As a fellow artist I think it is much harder to paint, draw or make things more realistic and make them look as a photograph... Anyone with a mind and some talent can make abstract things, I know this but I was saying I admire artists that can create things that are realistic (in terms of real life) and can make things proportionate-as real life.....These artists demonstrate natural talent and apply them to their realistic paintings....To replicate something exactly is amazing.......This is my ultimate goal...then I could see moving on to abstract.....Its just my opinion.....Not always but most artists who cant draw realistically draw abstractly.....Or the artists just has the emotion and not the talent with it.. Sometimes I admire the beauty rather than the emotion or what the work holds......
|
Murphy, I never would have guessed you were an artist... But soemtimes people aren't inspired by drawing whats in front of them. THe abstract art posted in this topic is extremely detailed and well made, I hope you notice that. Abstract is to let loose imagination and creativity, not because you just can't draw things in real life. I'm sure the abstract artists mentioned in this thread just went "O, i can't draw real life stuff, I'll jsut make up a bunch of crap so my crap will look decent!" I find your statements abotu abstract art to be very ignorant and false. And to replicate something amazing would be cool and all, but would you rahter see a McDonalds drawn with absolutely every detailed brick scratch and chip drawn in, or or fantasy pictures of creatures and imaginary heavens. Abstract art isn't a fallback you dolt, its a form of art itsself people enjoy.
|
I do not think it is false , being a fellow artists because ,drawing that mcdonalds picture is not what I had in mind but, is much harder to create.... I could draw a great picture of mystical dragons and such that look good but I do not admire this that much, but making something like this that looks like a real life creature whether it is really real or not I could admire.....Its just my opinion of a fellow artist.....An abstract artists has no boundaries to work within, the realism one does though, and the other question is then could this abstract artists use this talent you say to draw the incredibly hard realistic art in terms of looking like a photograph-(best ex.) even though it may, please do not see this a an offense to artists you like it is just my opinion as an artist..... Im sorry im just saying making things perfect is much harder.....

Don't get me wrong, I'd hang a Fragonard in my living room before a Dali (don't quote me on that) but I believe there's room for all kinds of art. Sweeping all non-realism art into the bin would be a tragedy. |
:
I also think that creating photorealistic recreations takes technical expertise, but I don't see anything artistic about it. |
:
I define "art" as anything that a person has obviously spent time over. Morph might think that Mark Ryden isn't a very good artist as he doesn't paint "realistic" things, but who cares? I wouldn't be able to paint like that for years, maybe ever. And truth be told he probably CAN paint still lifes and suchlike (after all, all the "abstract" work, as Doug pointed out, is actually very realistic, just rather surreal) he just finds them dull as hell and wants to stretch his talents a bit. After all, if all I did was sit painting fruit all the time I'd have given up drawing years ago. |
You're right, Doug. The figures in Mark Ryden's paintings aren't abstracted, they're just exaggerated.
|
The key is teal could you paint that fruit perfectly..........

Oh crap...I was supposed to ignore you. |
Well, I think it would be interesting to give a shout out to artists who aren't painters. Well, I gotta give a shout out to steve purcell, the creator of Sam and Max:Freelance police. Holy jumpin' mother of god in a side car with chocolate jimmies and a lobster bib, this guy is talented. Kepp your eyes out for the new Sam and Max game for the XBOX. Other gifted individuals I can think of off the top of my head: John K, "Swampy" Marsh, Dav Pilkey, Van Halen(Music is art and eruption kicks ass!) The entire bands of Primus, Tool, RATM, Megadeth, and Faith No More.. Boycott Taco Bell and always stay fresh! I myself don't like abstarct or shock art, I think it sucks donkey but if you love it I don't mind, whatever floats your boat! Though that picture with the naked girl was some sick twisted shit!
|
I see your point this is correct too I just view it a different way you all bring up good points thoughm I could discuss more but I found it would end up a stalemate, but rest assure I plan on being the first to make this perfect picture.....dont think Im not ready to fully back myself up because I am but usually these discussions outbreak into an argument and I rather have peace for now.

I myself am an artist. I do oil paintings and concept drawings all the time. This summer I am going to sell my work and start an online portfolio of my work. I am also taking coarses in school to get an art dagree. I am pretty good at art, you should see my work it is very good. But unfortainitly I can't post it yet. But I will.
This past semester I did like a 20 min drawing of a vacume brush and we had to use charcol. Well my drawing turned out photo realistic. and I got an A. Right now I am working with drawing with movement in them. Like if you were to take a pencil or a rular and wave it around like a fan then draw that movement. Thats pretty hard to understand at first but once you see how to do it, it's pretty easy. You get that trans parent look to everything when things are moveing. It's pretty cool. I can say that my inspiration for my work is HR Gigar. I love that nightmarish gothic look to his work. :fuzblink: When I was in Junior Highschool I took a graphics class and all of my work was Oddworld related. I did a mirror etching of the Oddworld inhabitants simbol, I also did a air brushing of Abes head comeing out of an old green shirt I have. Underneath his head it says "hello!" I also did a cartoon of Abe standing in the back ground of Necrum Mines. And I have another shirt with a Mudokin Skeleton imprinted on it. |
I'm mostly into realism and I can't understand some isms at all. But I'm becoming more open minded the whole time...;)
I like the Finnish painter Helene Schjerfbeck a lot. Here are two of her works, but I couldn't find my favourite ones...:( http://www.freenet.hut.fi/taide/schjerf/toipilas.jpg "The Little Convalescent" http://www.freenet.hut.fi/taide/schjerf/tanssik.jpg "Dancing Shoes" What comes to myself, I wouldn't call myself an artist...:o Far from it. But I draw and paint with oil colours a lot. |
So Morphy, you would rather have bland imitation than actual imagination? I submit that it takes a lot more skill and talent to paint a Surreal picture than a Realistic one. Of course, I don't think that I would be able to achieve either with any degree of skill, and I severely doubt that you could, either.
|
First Doug any one can be right and this is not worth discussing because it will end up as a argument most likely and is a matter of view...(but thank you for the positive comment) and I will achieve it Danny.........
|
Friggin Aye man, that abstract naked children nazi shit is no good.
|
Anybody read the Spawn comic books? Well the artists that the Spawn comic book recruits are ****ing off the hook. I defy any abstract artist to kick more ass than the Spawn comic book.
