Oddworld betas

Does anyone know much about oddworld betas? I'll give a few examples:
Whatever happened to the elum trap? Most people say that only one image of it exists, and is probably just a concept image, however, a certain avatar on this site depicts abe in a different position, suggesting that at least two shots were taken.

Of course, that's only one example, and probably one that doesn't matter, anyway. Then again... nah, who cares, just post anything you know about oddworld beta screens! And I'd prefer you don't mention the betas for the ps2 version, because those have been discussed TO DEATH :fuzvamp:

Oh, you have no sense of humour, Xav.

Anyway, I don't get what you mean by "Oddworld betas", smartiamppost. Could you (or anyone else) explain exactly they are?

Xavier 06-14-2010 01:17 AM

Aaand a well deserved spam infraction for enchilado.

An early build of an Oddworld game, back in the days of Paramite stockyards and that wired part of Rupturefarms that can be seen beyond the electric fence in the demo.

MeechMunchie 06-14-2010 07:32 AM

The Elum trap was replaced with honey, I believe.

STM 06-14-2010 09:31 AM

Can you show us a picture of the wired bit Phylum?

Crashpunk 06-14-2010 12:55 PM

Didn't Abe's Exoddus originally had Elum in Necrum?

Never heard of that I have to say.

Holy Sock 06-15-2010 03:55 AM

I always wondered why they didn't include paramites in the stockyard section of the game ( apart from those secret areas).

Xavier 06-15-2010 07:56 AM

I guess it's because it's better to introduce enemies one at a time and not all of them directly. You know keep things fresh.

STM 06-15-2010 08:09 AM

I can agree there, they exorcised sligs, bats, various industrial machines and then scrabs in two levels

Holy Sock 06-15-2010 12:54 PM

I have another query now. Why Bats and Bees? They went out of their way to design rather interesting and original creatures for Oddworld but then they just shoved in bats and bees? Was there a reason for this lack of "oddworld spin" on both these creatures?

Wil 06-15-2010 01:18 PM

Lack of necessity given they're only a few pixels in size, plus they play no satirical role. Plus their behaviour is pretty simple, and the names Bees and Bats possibly serve to help players to have an intuitive understanding of how they operate in gameplay.

The Art of Oddworld Inhabitants shows that at least the bees had an interesting concept design (albeit called Wasps).

Holy Sock 06-15-2010 02:20 PM

I need that book...

Like max said, plus we never saw them closely, so they might be different than the ones on earth, we just don't know it.

Same thing is true for the birds.

STM 06-16-2010 07:38 AM

Bats kill you so I guess there at least a bit different on oddworld INSTANT DEATH

Wil 06-16-2010 08:52 AM

Like most other Oddworld creatures and their Earthian ecomorphic equivalents.

Holy Sock 06-16-2010 01:34 PM

That's because Abe has the biological sturcture of tissue soaked in water.

smartlamppost 07-11-2010 01:31 AM

Wow, saudi I haven't replied at all; usually when people reply it comes up in my email account :/ aww well, shanks for the memories!

ODDWORLDisTHEbest! 07-11-2010 11:13 AM

when they changed it to scrabs why did they still use pictures of paramites on the back of the cover?

Xavier 07-11-2010 11:25 AM

It's a little thing called "mistake", ever heard of it?

ODDWORLDisTHEbest! 07-11-2010 11:41 AM

nope, so back to my question?

Wil 07-11-2010 11:51 AM

It was a mistake. So you'll have to look it up.

ODDWORLDisTHEbest! 07-11-2010 12:50 PM

yes but if it was, surely they would have noticed it.

OddjobAbe 07-11-2010 01:00 PM

They clearly did not. Or perhaps they did, but didn't expect so much of a fuss to be kicked up about it.

Holy Sock 07-11-2010 01:07 PM

What's this mixup we all whining about?

Wil 07-11-2010 02:26 PM

If they did notice, they either didn't care or it was too late to do anything about it.

I'm not sure why you're being so adamant that they left screenshots from removed and altered gamescreens on the packaging intentionally.

Luskan 07-11-2010 03:47 PM

Maybe they just left it in to get people wondering if there was a secret area they had missed.

Due to Oddworlds immense size the gravity would be much greater than Earths. If what you said was true, the Abe wouldn't be able to walk, let alone hop.

Ever heard of a joke?

smartlamppost 07-12-2010 01:12 AM

What's the point of including a title to a reply? Bah, whatever...

Yes.

Please don't double post, smartlamppost. Use the edit button which is located in cluster of buttons at the bottom right of each post.

Wrong.. The size of a planet (ie. it's volume) alone cannot indicate it's gravitational field strength. However, if you knew the size and 'density' of the planet, then you'd be able to estimate the gravitational pull it exerts on the beings and objects on the surface of the planet. Tadahhhhh!

I think them bats must have teeth that work like tazer guns :D

Right, Mr. Serious. My joke was a comedic observation that a single bat can kill Abe immediately. Therefore, I comically compared his biological structure to that of a tissue soaked in water, comically pointing out how fragile Abe and other Mudokons seem to be.

I heard it in this forum but can't remember when though but. I think i remember hearing that they couldn't fix Elum into AE because the game was already big enough?

and i made up the Necrum part as that would be the most logical place for him

Nate 07-13-2010 04:07 AM

They couldn't put Elum in to AE because the modified A.L.I.V.E. engine took up more memory and they couldn't fit him in.

As far as we know, there was never any plan to include him in any specific area of the game.

K100 07-14-2010 02:24 AM

Hi. I have found something that can interest you.
Someone claim to have a beta version of Abe's exoddus.
More informations here: http://forums.hidden-palace.org/view...9a9096ad49501d

There is no download link, but there is some screen comparaison between the beta and the final version:
http://i1.fastpic.ru/big/2010/0108/9...b86fdb4197.jpg

And sorry for my english, I'm french. :)

Wil 07-14-2010 02:52 AM

That is interesting! Thanks for sharing! Hopefully they can get ahold of it for redistribution.

The second screen comparison, of where QuikSave is introduced, on the left is how that screen looks in the PlayStation demo.

Phylum 07-14-2010 02:56 AM

Wow. This look promising, nice find!

Nate 07-14-2010 03:12 AM

It just looks like the same screens but the backgrounds have been swapped with ones from elsewhere.
