Announcement

http://www.oddworldforums.net/announcement.php?f=9

I know there's going to be arguments and petty stone-throwing from people who think its their divine right to splurt their jizz all over the forums. Get it over and done with, so I can get back to banning you all.

Wings of Fire 11-06-2009 03:47 PM

A redraft of the OWF rules would be nice, they seriously need reviewing.

Strike Witch 11-06-2009 03:49 PM

Nate's having a responsibility attack.

At least it's better then when Hobo has one.

But in all Siriusness, it's fine, we can deal.

Amen.

Amen without lie.

Amen and Amen of Amen.

This is a good idea.

Wil 11-06-2009 04:02 PM

I have been working on redrafting the OWF rules for some time. On and off, mostly off. Unfortunately, I have very little free time to put into it. But rest assured that work has been put into what you're requesting.

Hobo 11-06-2009 04:50 PM

This needs a name. Also; fuck off Ghost.

Strike Witch 11-06-2009 05:09 PM

Aww, poor bubby.

T-nex 11-06-2009 07:44 PM

I approve this message :D

No seriously... I think this is needed, because the amount of spam has even managed to make me facepalm myself more than once... Which is weird.. Cos I usually endorse innocent spam. But it IS getting out of hand.

Leto 11-06-2009 09:20 PM

I uh

I should probably leave now

slig# 5719 11-06-2009 11:48 PM

I have only been here for a few days so I don't know how effective the current rules are though I see that people agree that the rules should be reviewed, but even I know spam rears it's head in many threads.

As for the trolls I havn't been bothered by them guess i'm just lucky.

Though I think reviewing the rules seems to be a good idea.

MA 11-07-2009 02:49 AM

well i'm predicting i'll get a week ban by next week, if not permabanned.

just not very tolerant at the moment.

Wings of Fire 11-07-2009 05:58 AM

It's easy, instead of taking your angst out on threads and newbies, take it out on blogs and your facebook status.

OANST 11-07-2009 06:11 AM

I can still berate people who join with the intent of only talking about zoophilia, right? If so, we have no problems.

shaman 11-07-2009 06:22 AM

Of course you can. Christ we're not barbarians.

used:) 11-07-2009 06:25 AM

Just to let you all know, I have a moral obligation to spam AIN's threads.

OANST 11-07-2009 06:26 AM

I knew things had to be coming to a head. I was all like "Damn, Nate. Two negreps in a row?" After I dried my eyes, I said to myself "Self, this is your fault. You've disappointed him. You've let him down. He isn't drifting from our love. You've been pushing him away from it". And then I cried some more. You know, for the tragedy of it all.

Wings of Fire 11-07-2009 06:28 AM

You'd think the gravity of this thread would hold the implication 'DO NOT SPAM IN THIS THREAD, I MEAN YOU STRIKE WITCH, AND YOU SEKTO AND YOU USED!.

Srsly guys, learn to read subtext.

used:) 11-07-2009 06:32 AM

Except we're not spamming, we're easing around the topic enough to stay within the parameters of on-topicness.

And to make that clear in this post.

I think perhaps we should consider the existence of anti-spam, as it very well might change our entire outlook on the modern theory. And let's not even get into the OANST-Boson.

And yeah, I'm tired of seeing red sprinkles in my sea of green. OWF memes stay though.

Go suck a barrel of yeasty dicks.

Pilot 11-07-2009 08:15 AM

.....you guys think the forums are dead now?

Our only options at this point are to talk about Oddworld or the same straightfaced political crap that appeals to about 5 active members. Clap.

We should start a new forum, free of the tyranny of the current forum administrators. It shall be called The Ass Asylum.

Not to be argumentative, but Pilot does have a point. I think that the main reason that we spam as much as we do is that we aren't exactly overflowing with personnel, or fascinating topics. I'm not saying that our spam isn't annoying. I'm not saying that we don't take it too far. It's just that it's so fucking dead in here.

MeechMunchie 11-07-2009 08:46 AM

I approve of this announcement. I needed a good hard slap in the face, I've been acting like just because these aren't face-to-face conversations I don't have any of the same obligations.

I'm not exactly the most on-topic person myself, but we've been doing perfectly fine playfully spamming for months earlier in the year and that was all good and fun. It just kind of seems that the spam is turning very cliquey and hostile, also I object to people spamming in OD. I hardly post there, but that part of the forum is kind of our public face, and I think it should be kept as realistically pleasent as possible.

Also, when I joined I recieved a bit of a baptism of fire from yourself and Kastere on my very first two days, I was kind of expecting that and I felt good that I didn't let it beat me, that I was very quickly welcomed as a contributive member and that all the other members were very pleasent and accepting. If I joined the forums as they are now, I'd have left after a few days. Simple as.

abe is now! 11-07-2009 09:00 AM

I don't think OWF is dead now, what I understood of Nate's message is that we can "spam" a little (I mean we can go off topic but without upsetting the entire thread) without exaggerating, insulting and trolling newbies, helping newbies to join te community without mocking them. I think it's not a bad thing and that it doesn't kill all forums' joy and fun.

Wings of Fire 11-07-2009 09:07 AM

And AIN just summarized the situation much better than I ever could, how often does that happen?

T-nex 11-07-2009 09:07 AM

Yea.. I think a little off topicness is fine, as long as the whole topic doesn't get ruined beyond repair... It's just sometimes someone says something that has absolutely nothing to do with the topic and they think it's funny, when it fact it just serves to derail the topic even more... And this happens with perfectly discussable(I know it's not a word) topics too.

Edit: yes.. AIN is god :D

MA 11-07-2009 09:08 AM

i +repped him.

There has been a bit of hostility about, and we could probably take that down a notch. I'm just so used to being the measuring stick for how hostile the forums are that when I'm not being hostile I feel like everything must be okay. In retrospect though, yeah, bitches be hatin'.

Wil 11-07-2009 09:16 AM

Of course the mods have been more lax on spam over the last five years because in the absense of any steady stream of Oddworld news we've only got our community to keep us coming back here. But whatever the state of on-topic discussion, there's always going to be a point where the spamminess reaches unacceptable levels of aggression and cliquiness. That line, uh, point has been crossed.

We are tempering recent escalation, not modding the community back to the stone ages.

Pilot 11-07-2009 09:35 AM

I don't think that anybody's being unreasonable here. I'm one of the biggest purveyors or pointless memes and random pictures that litter the threads in Off Topic, and the mods have never acted immaturely or been hostile about it in any way.

What I can't stand is purposefully telling a new member to leave or that they're not welcome. I'll just razz 'em quite a bit. We're here to have fun.

OANST 11-07-2009 10:50 AM

I don't like the fact that Necrum'd threads takes away from your post count. I'm not sure how that's relevant. I just thought I would mention it.

Havoc 11-07-2009 12:32 PM

Spamming can be fun, it can even be on-topic when you post a funny pun or picture at exactly the right time in a thread. Some people have that skill, some people don't.

And then of course there is the issue of bashing newbies into the ground, which is probably what sparked the mod team into a temporary state of 'ZOMG WE NEEDZ RULEZ!'. Cuz... I remember this same situation not to long ago... 6 months to a year I think? Yeah that went perfect, good work! Lets try it again.

Mac Sirloin 11-07-2009 12:35 PM

Wait, how did I give you a trial by fire, WOF?

Oh it was those PM's.

I forgot about that.

Anyway, this seems like a good idea. I'mma clean up my act.

I agree with this, when i joined the forums by my own admition i was an idiot. But it's better that people object at that point than wait until the person in question is a productive member (?) and then knock them sideways. It is humane and useful when you first join, but yeah we have been a little snappy. :p

We don't do week bans any more. You stay banned until some of your infractions expire, which can take up to 3 months. It probably won't take that long though, unless you get infracted three times in the one day.

To be honest i've been anxiously hoping that there will be another media dramatisation of another member's post.

Do I need to reiterate my letter?

And I'm with Pilot. I even see mods pulling shit like that. I remember seeing Max once post the infamous "What?" after I got negrepped by Nate for it. But I won't get into the whole "preferential treatment" thing. Last time I remember that happening, there was a whole shit storm of petty internet drama that I don't want to go through again.
