Lacy Hemsmire 10-27-2008 09:11 AM

Aaaart. ;)

I've just gotten into drawing Oddworld creatures and so I need the practice. Please critique or whatever if you want. This is my second time drawing a slig/slog - much less anything Oddworld. .-.;

http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/r...Picture056.jpg

My friend asked me to draw her Slig character Malice in exchange for her drawing a picture of VP Aslik. This is what I came up with. All I have to use is a camera so the picture is not going to be good. I don't have any art programs or a tablet, so you're going to have to deal with colored pencils and outline.

Please though, minus that, please tell me what you think of it - even if you think it's absolutely awful. The more I get into drawing the better it shall become, hopefully.

OddYouko 10-27-2008 01:45 PM

Awful?! It's not awful! =O
I like it very much Lacy Hemsmire. :)

I fail at backgrounds...but you're really good. And I can't decide weather to color my pics or leave them blank.
I hope to see more of your art Lacy Hemsmire!

Lacy Hemsmire 10-27-2008 03:35 PM

Thank you. Uh. xD

skillyaslig 10-27-2008 09:24 PM

Sloggie! lol, gotta keep those pants squeaky clean XD

Havoc 10-28-2008 02:05 AM

Consider using a ruler for those straight lines. Looks very good otherwise.

Lacy Hemsmire 10-28-2008 05:04 AM

Haha I know about the lines. Unfortunately I don't have a ruler but I've got a lot of things that'll work as a substitute. :]

scipionyx 10-28-2008 07:07 AM

Hey Lacy this is super cool, it is awesome not aweful, I wish I could draw sligs like you can draw them! keep it up ;)

GlacierDragon 10-28-2008 09:46 AM

Great work. I love the Slig's mask. The Sloggie is cute :D

Wings of Fire 10-28-2008 11:12 AM

I <3 penciled drawings, they have a certain charm to them :) and yours is no exception.

Might I advise you do some work on perspective next?

Lacy Hemsmire 10-28-2008 03:35 PM

...LOOL. Yeah. Will do. I'm really getting into trying to draw them better. Better as in, detailed perspectives, shading, and all that stuffs.

I might plug my scanner back in.

crazysteef 10-28-2008 05:32 PM

Its not half-bad! Did you use colored pencil to color it in? I'm just getting into the medium myself, and I hear its all about layers, layers, and more layers. Your art of Oddworld will help you figure out how to make all the little details that make a work stand out. I know I'm using my copy almost constantly (@_@)

Lacy Hemsmire 10-29-2008 08:07 AM

I did use colored pencils. I'm not that great at it, but I'm trying my best. I'm practicing as much as I can (although I've got lots of other things I should be doing) so I can get them to look right.
I can't wait until it gets here. I'm trying to prepare myself by drawing the critters beforehand so I'll know what to expect. I ezz so excited!

crazysteef 11-02-2008 10:29 AM

As they say (whoever they may be) "practice makes perfect". And nothing you'll ever do will prepare you for the oddness you'll soon experience.:fuzvamp: I have to say you're doing very well for not having any models! Can't wait to see what comes next.:fuzwink:

totor 11-02-2008 11:44 AM

That's really good:). We can see that you shade pretty good. I've read that you did have no rule. It's pretty hard to draw something without a rule (espescially an industrial facilitie indoor). That's good you just need to get some good instruments to do not an "awful" ( as you said before) work.

Lacy Hemsmire 11-02-2008 01:07 PM

Thanks, haha. I'll probably stop posting art on here, but you can find it at the DeviantART account on my profile. That's where I'll continue posting it.

OddYouko 11-02-2008 01:47 PM

Stop posting art here?! Why?! :( Your art is really good.
I like it. Please atleast post one more picture.

scipionyx 11-03-2008 09:12 AM

why do you want to upload your art just at deviantart? , please don't stop posting your art here :(, I think your art is great please keep it up :fuzblink:

Lacy Hemsmire 11-04-2008 01:57 PM

O:

IMAGE HEAVY.

If you insist. I don't have a scanner. I've tried hooking it up but the tower I'm using..I can't hook it up to it. Believe me, I tried. D: It's old and the scanner is new. So until I get it you'll have to deal with these hideous things. They might look a little better if I had a scanner. D:

They're not perfect, I know. Some lines are off-center. Perspective might be off. I'm still practicing. I've got the artbook and things have been much better since I started using it as a reference. So expect much more to come. Hopefully they'll start looking uh, better. -Writes something about a ruler on the back of her hand.-

I forgot to switch pens. Originally the scrabs were supposed to be fighting. But now they're apparently admiring their recently-acquired.... appendages. I PROMISE this was unintentional. D: Still, it seemed funny so why not.

http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/r...Picture066.jpg
My Intern character TOAST. I love him. <3

http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/r...Picture068.jpg
Gluk practice. Could also be what became of Molluck. >> << Even their vacuums emit noxious vapors. Just wait until it reaches his cigarette. 8D

http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/r...Picture067.jpg
Drog! :D From my fanfic, Vula's Oddysee.

I have others I haven't put here which you can find here: http://s470.photobucket.com/albums/rr65/Sligette/

There's a comic there too. ):

scipionyx 11-04-2008 11:02 PM

Whoa this is so great!!!:D

I really like them all, they are cool, gee but the glukkon is the funniest and the Slig is the coolest!

I also like Elsa and the Scrab on photobucket.

whaaaa you can draw sligs so well!!!!!!!!!!

Wings of Fire 11-05-2008 12:07 AM

A tenner says that you've done the very first Rule 34 of Oddworld ever.

Also good :p, but seriously O_o wtf?

Lacy Hemsmire 11-05-2008 06:33 AM

LOOOOL. SWEET. I've always wanted to do a Rule 34 just for kicks. xDD Who knew it would be from Oddworld?!

I didn't mean to though. All my future scrabs have much thinner lines - and less of them - in that area.

Whoops lmao.

Tidus 11-05-2008 09:46 AM

Awesome! Maybe you have to round the shapes a bit more in the chests (in the scrabs pic), but it looks really good.

Have you tried to paint them with Photoshop? I know you haven't it got but it can be easier to paint, and you can draw complex backgrounds with it. I think there is people here who can help you with that, if you want. You can try to make 3D backgrounds too (:D).

Lacy Hemsmire 11-05-2008 10:06 AM

I used to have Photoshop and I'm very familiar with 2.0 - it's all I've ever used. But I've had to replace my old computer and it doesn't run... well, much of anything new. D: I'm also really bad with a mouse - in particular this one. I don't have a tablet either, so... I've kind of gotten lazy 'cause I don't have time to sit down for 897678969 hours and paint like I used to. Haha.

crazysteef 11-05-2008 12:35 PM

Nice job with the anatomy and coloring! I loved the one of the vacuuming Glukkon; that one really made my day!:D

OddYouko 11-06-2008 05:40 AM

Those pictures are really good Lacy Hemsmire. :D
The Glukkon made me smile! And the Scrabs are cool too!
Your Intern looks really good...I'm really warming up to those guys. =P
And I ♥ the Slig!

Hey me too! :D I also have no tablet work with a pc mouse and used 2.0 untill two weeks ago, now I use photoshop elements 7 and it is a really cool programm... well what ever, keep up the good work! ;)

GlacierDragon 11-07-2008 04:00 AM

I like all of those pictures, but my favorite has to be the Intern. Great work on the Glukkon.

Lacy Hemsmire 11-08-2008 06:23 PM

http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/r...Picture082.jpg

Uh... here's a concept on what an Intern queen might look like. I used refs from Interns to Maggie/Margaret, the Glukkon queen, from the Oddworld artbook. It didn't take me too long, but I'm growing very fond of Interns. D: I messed up her breasts by accident and just decided to cover them up instead of dragging them down under that really odd-looking sheet on her hips.

The dripping stuff is from the uh, other end. >_o; There's some kind of cushioned roll cart that catches the eggs - with help from either other interns or whatever else is there to help, and they're moved off to a ... place. Oh forget it.

If they're not a superspecies... uh... I'll draw a variation of that. o_o Or something. Lawl.

GlacierDragon 11-09-2008 01:32 AM

Great work! She looks a bit bored.

scipionyx 11-09-2008 02:52 AM

great! You become better and better in drawing Interns :D

OddYouko 11-09-2008 01:41 PM

Awesome Intern queen! Yeah I'm liking them too. :3
She does look rather bored. lol :D
Awesome job Lacy Hemsmire! You can definitely draw Interns better then I can.
I looove the detail in all your pictures!

The Intern named Toast finds himself rudely awakened by an over-cuddly Achsah. Achsah (Ock-sah xD) is a Silox, some created creature I made up forever ago. She's a cub.

http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/r...Picture087.jpg
I'M SO PROUD OF THIS xD Nameless female gabbit. I'm sure it's been done 89734893274 times but it's my third attempt at a Gabbit. [8 The second will never be seen by human eyes.

http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/r...Picture083.jpg
It's Munch. It needs to be darkened, eep. I'm going to digitally color this one - AND REDUCE THE SIZE OF MY IMAGES LOL. I used this stock photo as a reference.

GlacierDragon 11-11-2008 09:09 AM

That female Gabbit has to be one of my favorites so far. I'm not sure why, I just thinhk it's really good.

Achsah id cute :D

http://s470.photobucket.com/albums/r...t=weecolor.png

Lolwhut.

Uh. I'm rusty with Photoshop so there's some things I'll correct over time. It's my first digitally colored Oddworld... er... thing. |D Woo.

And thank you so much for the comments, by the way. D: I really appreciate them.

scipionyx 11-12-2008 06:45 AM

:D hey great the female gabbit is really cute I like how you coloured her ^^

and Toast is also cool :D

Matriar 11-12-2008 09:44 AM

The pencil drawings look like screenshots of an animated movie WIPs. :D

OddYouko 11-12-2008 02:49 PM

Awww Toast and Achsah are cute!!

And the female Gabbit  she's really good both with color and without color! :D
-two thumbs way up-

Annd the Munch picture looks really good too! A little blurry but good! =P

Manteau-De-Nuit 11-13-2008 10:04 AM

Your draws are totally amazing! I should try to draw Sligs and mudokons, it would be the first time! Great job! I admire!

mlg man 11-13-2008 12:41 PM

i would be happy to turn your level art into actual levels for the game

This is excellent! You know why? BECAUSE YOU HAVE VARIED LINE WEIGHTS! If it were all the same thickness/opacity, it would hardly be as impressive as it is.

Remember this, all you aspiring artists.
