Recently he made the coverart for the latest Psycroptic album:

According to their latest blog entry

:

Ob(Servant) was mixed and mastered by former MACHINE HEAD and SOULFLY guitarist Logan Mader (DIVINE HERESY, GOJIRA) and recorded once again by guitarist Joe Haley. Drummer Dave Haley commented on their upcoming release:

"'Ob(Servant)' is definitely our finest hour (well, finest 49 minutes and 49 seconds anyway). It's of course a cliché of every band to say that their newest album is their best and so on, but we are very proud of what we have done on this album. The writing process was a little different for this album, with Joe (guitarist) writing pretty much all the material. This gives the album a very coheisive and flowing feel, and this album is definatley our most diverse material thus far. The artwork is also amazing, having been completed by Raymand Swanland (DEEDS OF FLESH). Those not familiar with his work should check it out – you will be amazed!

It's a mixture of everything we have done, as well as adding in new elements to continue the progression we are on as a band. No point releasing the same album twice, right? Like "Symbols of Failure", Joe engineered the album, but this time we enlisted the help of metal guru Logan Mader to mix and master the album...and that was probably the best decision we have ever made. The album sounds huge! Since we are currently on the amazing Summer Slaughter tour in the US at the moment, we had been receiving mixes while on the road. After our LA show Logan took myself and Joe to his Dirty Icon studio and put the finishing touches on the mix. Huge is one word for the sound he achieved."

I don't mean to be a hemroid, and I know how great Swanland is and the terrific Oddworld concept art he's done, but what does this have to do with Oddworld?

Xavier 08-24-2008 10:05 AM

You are kind of right, I'm turning this in a more general Swanland thread.

He recently did the Heavy Metal poster that was handed out at the San Diego Convention:

Alternative version of Psycroptic's (Ob)servant:

and a Clean version of the first one

Wil 09-24-2008 05:31 AM

Thank the gods of decency there’s a clean version. I was flagellating myself every time I scrolled past the filthy version above.

That small, alternative (Ob)Servant cover reminds me of Sam.

Of course, he's on the set. He seems to have primarily designed and illustrated the visuals of the Jund shard.

Raymond Swanland's art is pretty amazing. He seems to really like illustrating dragons.
Is it just me, or did some of art become a little less refined than it was in Stranger's Wrath?:fuzconf: I'm not saying it got worse, he just seems to be perusing a different style.

I'm loving the Mycoloth, Caldera Hellion, and Nomad Giant. Now I wish I had kept up with Magic the Gathering.

Bullet Magnet 10-14-2008 04:11 AM

Except for Fomori Nomad and Pact of the Titan, these are all from the very latest set that came out two weeks ago. The other two came out last year.

Bullet Magnet 11-01-2008 08:18 PM

Raymond's Predator Dragon artwork just got an article! It includes a sneaky look at the preliminary sketch Raymond submitted to the art director for approve.

Some updates from the man himself...
http://www.raymondswanland.com/Pages/Title01.html

:

In light of these challenging times, I want to wish everyone good fortune in this New Year of 2009!

2008 was a very full year of work for me which distracted me quite a bit from the outside world... including this website. Having recently relocated from the San Francisco Bay Area to Honolulu Hawaii, I intend to find a bit more balance with the natural world and to communicate more with the human world. Here goes:

Just to catch up, early in 2008, I worked on preproduction art for the forthcoming Heavy Metal Animated film to be animated by Blur studios and produced by David Fincher (one of my favorite directors). As is often the case with Hollywood, production and funding on the film has been riding a rollercoaster, so we'll just have to wait and see where the project goes in 2009.

In the latter half of 2008 I had a considerable showing of pieces in the EXPOSÉ 6 annual from Ballistic Publishing as well as a piece in the SPECTRUM 15 annual from Underwood Books.

Also, I created a fair number of pieces for the Shards of Alara set for Magic: The Gathering. For those who don't collect the card game, my art is quite prevalent throughout the companion book A Planeswalker's Guide to Alara: A Magic: The Gathering Field Guide, including the cover. Many incredible artists toil away to create the expansive, imaginative world of Magic and I'm proud to be among them. More to come on that later.

Lastly for this update, I want to mention a couple profiles of my work that will be released in the coming months. First, I will be featured on the cover of upcoming issue #40 of ImagineFX magazine with a tutorial on creature design. Secondly, I'll be featured with another tutorial in the first edition of the Art Squared digital painting annual.

No new updates to my gallery this time, but I have a considerable backlog of images I created in the last year that I can't wait to show... as soon as get them all organized. In the meantime, here are a couple blog links to get a taste - Blog1 - Blog2.

With upcoming work in books, films, comics, cards, prints and perhaps an illustrated novel, this year will be another full and, hopefully, fruitful one.

I'll be back sooner than last time... promise!
