Next Oddworld game news...

... Maxis co-founder and games industry veteran Jeff Braun is involved!

http://www.cordweekly.com/cordweekly...4&news_id=1747

You might have heard of Maxis, look where this takes you: http://www.maxis.com

abe is now! 05-22-2008 12:23 PM

I hope they will product a good game, I really trust them!!!

Wings of Fire 05-22-2008 12:28 PM

This is why I'm trying to keep you on MSI :p

Very interesting news Xav :D awesome find.

Hulaabeo 05-22-2008 12:41 PM

OMG another Oddworld game? In a few years? WHY?

totor 05-22-2008 12:57 PM

I don't understand anything. Did OWI's studio close or not?

GlacierDragon 05-22-2008 01:00 PM

YAY! I hope they do make another game, I really do.

EDIT: But what about CS? Are they just going to abandon it? I really wish OWI would make up their minds on what they are doing.

OddYouko 05-22-2008 01:38 PM

I don't really undertand all that BUT I really hope they make a new game and still get done with CS and the Abe movie.
I can't stand all this waiting! -faints-
I really can but it's driving me crazy. :)

Sanssouci 05-22-2008 02:11 PM

The article is misleading: the collaboration with Braun may not be on an Oddworld project, the article uses 'Oddworld' to mean 'Oddworld Inhabitants' and refers to it as a 'sequel to the franchise', which is frankly bizarre wording as a sequel would imply a direct link but as it is 'to' the franchise rather than within the franchise... (franchise being the Oddworld IP, separate to the Citizen Siege IP)
I wouldn't bet against this being Citizen Siege, as the article mentions the collaboration as the 'next' project. Though it could be any of the four.

:

But what about CS? Are they just going to abandon it?
Why would you think that?
:

An original property among four other new projects, Citizen Siege has yet to see release

OWI is not closed.

They won't abandon Cltizen Siege.

Wow, that sounds incredible! Which means it’s an awful lot to live up to, but a lot about what Lorne has been arguing for over the last couple of years. I’m no video game industry watcher, but Maxis will be a great company to do this. Does this article confirm Maxis’s involvement, or just Braun’s? Still, don’t get too excited yet. This is years off.

totor: Yes, they closed the studio. Now they design games for other studios (like Maxis) to make.

GlacierDragon: They haven’t abandoned Citizen Siege; they are working on multiple things at once. It’s taking long enough to get the ball rolling on any one of them for Lorne to split his attention amongst (apparently) four different things.

Sanssouci 05-22-2008 02:17 PM

Normally Lorne refers to using videogame assets to make movies. I like how Braun has switched it and referred to using movie assets to make games, which sounds better, even if Lorne's way is more technically correct.

Bullet Magnet 05-22-2008 06:16 PM

Interest: piqued. Carry on, good fellows.

http://kotaku.com/392886/is-there-a-...ame-on-the-way

Saw it on Kotaku.

mudling 05-23-2008 12:03 AM

OMG!
Ditto to what Ghost said, I was on Kotaku, and saw the banner of Abe and I was like WTF!!?!
Wow, great news, can't wait for another OW game, and this is very intriguing.
Can't make me help but wonder, even though it's an "Oddworld game" that doesn't mean the game has to take part in Oddworld does it, it just has to be made by the company, doesn't it?
If so, it could be something we already know, owell.
*Edit* Wait, I'm realy confused. From reading over it, it seems like this is something new, and that Maxis is making it, unless Jeff Braun left the company.
Which would mean that the game would be set in Oddworld, and not hinder CI's progress at all, since OWI doesn't seem to be making it.
Hmm, seeing what Maxis has done before, this could be something like Habitales or Hand of the Odd.

Oddey 05-23-2008 04:13 AM

Maxis made the Sims. Oddworld made Abe. Sounds like there might end up being a Hand of the Odd. Or OddSims. Either way I'm excited. But how can Oddworld make so much all at the same time? Sure some of it is going to take years but still. If I was already excited I would have hopped around, but I'm not feeling all that springy at the moment.

Xavier 05-23-2008 04:34 AM

But how can Oddworld make so much all at the same time?

Oddworld "only" makes the concepts, story, designs and artistic direction.

If it's a game: the coding and rest of game developpement will be done by someone else...

If it's a movie or tv series: the animation will be done by someone else.

Lorne can direct a movie and supervise the artistic direction of a game "at the same time". He just won't need to be around 100% of the time for each project.

mudling 05-23-2008 05:29 AM

Like how George Lucas is with the EU (books)?
Thanks to him, we have twenty Darth Sidiuses running around, Chewbacka dies, and Luke gets married to someone who wants to kill him.
I would say Lorne is different but after OANST's protests, I'm starting to think otherwise.
Owell, I hope this turns out for the best, nethertheless, a Simoddworld would be hilarious, don't see it working though.

Bullet Magnet 05-23-2008 07:20 AM

Just because he was in Maxis, there's no reason to assume it will be "Sim" anything.

I really hope Lorne will not do the same mistakes, but he really seems to care about his creations, so I trust him on that.

Oddsville 05-23-2008 12:44 PM

Its really good to finally hear something on Oddworld, even though its not much of anything at all. I agree with Xav on that Lorne really dose care for his creations a great deal. He based his whole company around just owning the IP's of his creations which takes a great deal of dedication. However Lorne has had some surprising moves in the past so heres hoping for the best!

Update: Though Braun confirmed that he was working with Oddworld Inhabitants on a new product, it is uncertain if this game will be set in the Oddworld universe, or indeed if it will be an Oddworld sequel
So it might be Wage Wars, a game set on Oddworld, or something totally different...

It could even be pound dog! :p

Off-topic: glad to see you here Oddsville!

GlukkonGluk 05-23-2008 01:12 PM

It'd better b an OW game- and if so, it had better be relevent to the series with several things we can relate 2. (Or, the opposite of SW)

Oddsville 05-23-2008 01:24 PM

Yes, Its glad to be back; and with some good news! I've been in the Fire Academy for what seems like forever and now that I've finished I have time to start back up here. Glad to see that its still goin strong. Other than that I hope we at least get some more news soon or just something to keep us going, its been soo long sience we've really had something to feast on...

It is Oddworld, but its gonna be a while. And you can probably bet its not gonna be on the Wii, since it goes "1 to 1" with animated movies.

MeechShrykull1029 05-23-2008 07:34 PM

Yes, Abe is in it! It's either ME or SO. I think it's ME.

Where does it say Abe is in it?

MeechShrykull1029 05-23-2008 07:42 PM

There is a screenshot of Abe.

OddYouko 05-23-2008 07:45 PM

That picture is from MO you can see Munch's eye in the bottom of the screen.

I suspect that that reporter just doesn't know that OWI are operating outside of the Oddworld Universe with Citizen Siege. He's quoting the same student newspaper as everyone else (the one Xav posted in his initial thread).

mudling 05-24-2008 12:00 AM

Meech Shrykull, they used an old picture to show what Oddworld is for people who don't know. ;)
Not everyone has abe's image burned in their heads.
Well, I realy do wish it's another oddworld game, but I don't think the chances of that are very high. But as I said before, it seems strange that you would make a game from someone's universe if it isn't the universe they're famous for.
Oh, and what the hell is pound dogs? Seriously.
And yes, I've seen the pictures on TOGG.

You were not.

Anyway, I really wouldn't mind another Oddworld game, or at least some sort of ambient OW music, at the very least.

Yeah, I've seen like 20 articles about it on the net and they all quote the student newspaper (very often without giving it any credit at all).

And when I finally spot something that was not simply cut and paste, it's almost always a stupid assumption.

No one said it was going to be released on 360 or any of the next gen consoles, and yet you can see it on many videogames sites.

Oddsville 05-24-2008 06:18 AM

Yes, basically all we have is that its a game worked on by Jeff Braun and that we'll have to wait a long time to get our hands on it. Basically everything else you read is just shots in the dark by all the journalists/bloggers; so don't ready too much into em. I'll wait untill they start listing thier sources of all the new information before I start believing it.

Munch's Master 05-24-2008 10:23 AM

I'm sorry, but after 3 years of being told there's a new game on the way, or an Oddworld movie, and it then transpiring that there isn't, I'm skeptical. I'll believe this when I see it, and if it is a new Oddworld game I'll be over the moon. If it isn't, I won't be disappointed, as I'm not expecting it to get done in the next decade anyway.

3 years we've been waiting for a new game, and nothing. I don't really count Stranger's Wrath anyway, it's a FPS set in the Oddworld universe, not part of the Quintology.
So it's technically been 3 years since the last game, but to me it's been 6-7. I'm still waiting for a follow up to Munch's Odysee.

And I think if they are trying to do Oddworld, citizen Siege, Fangus and this pound dogs thing, they'll never get them done. You can't tackle everything at once, you have to go 1 at a time. If it means getting the next Oddworld game in 3 years rather than 5, I'd say work on Siege or Fangus or whatever first.

MeechShrykull1029 05-24-2008 10:26 AM

Oddworld, Citizen Siege, Fangus, and Pound Dog might be the 4 projects!

There has been no announcement of an Oddworld game or movie since The Brutal Ballad of Fangus Klot, and since OWI revealed it was stopping game development within about a week, it was obvious that wasn’t still in the pipeline. Lorne and others have mentioned, hinted, and suggested that there are plans to do many things, and that they are actively designing various things, but the only announcement has been about the Citizen Siege film.

All these things take time. If they are done one at a time, Lorne will be sitting around like a SpooceShrub waiting for the next thing to do. They are taking their time on everything to achieve the highest quality, and this allows them to work on multiple things at once. This has always been an ambition of Lorne’s, who envies film directors who can bring out dozens of films a year. It will take time to get this business model underway.

Oddworld, Citizen Siege, Fangus, and Pound Dog might be the 4 projects!

Things we actually know:

- They are working on 4 projects
- The Citizen Siege movie has been announced.
- Wage Wars, a game related to Citizen Siege has been announced.
- We know they are working on a tv series.
- Jeff Braun announced he was involved in a new game with Oddworld Inhabitants
- they didn't officially announced the Oddworld (abe) movie, but we know for sure it will come sometime after Citizen Siege, some concept art specifically for the movie has already been done.

Pound dog and Fangus, are probably not in the pipeline at the moment

MeechShrykull1029 05-24-2008 01:54 PM

The TV show might be about Fangus or Pound Dog. This is my theory.

3 years we've been waiting for a new game, and nothing.

As a further clarification; No, we haven't. We've been waiting three years for a movie and, as Lorne points out, animated films in Hollywood tend to be in planning for 4-8 years before any production starts.
