Who made OWF/Moderators?

I've gots another few questions and these ones might sound stupid...

Who made this site? Was it made by OWI or fans of OWI? Do people from OWI ever visit this site? If they do, do they ever post anything or do they just PM a Moderator? And I don't mean this to sound insulting or anything bad im just curious, but, why are current Moderators Moderators? Why "Max The Mug", "Nate", "Xavier", "Alcar" ect. Why were they the Moderators for this site?

Im not complaining and I don't want to be a moderator im just curious thats all

abe is now! 10-25-2007 05:44 AM

I'm not a veteran of this forum, but I think it has been made by OWI and by the first moderators and fans. I see in the Members list Alf, Alf's Assistant and Bross and they were Oddworld Inhabitants and they posted, especially Alf. I think an user has to ask to an administrator for become a moderator. Please correct if I am wrong.

Hobo 10-25-2007 11:06 AM

Oh my god....

Don't you guys know?

All the mods and admins work for OWI. Which is why we're so busy!

Mac Sirloin 10-25-2007 11:16 AM

Made by someone named Sydney, methinks.
NOT BY OWI YOU LITTLE MOKEY BASTARDS.

Oh, god, this isn't OTD, someone help me.

abe is now! 10-25-2007 11:45 AM

Excuse me, I was not in this forum when there was Sidney, but who is Sidney? And why she left the forum? And she created the forum, were these current mods the only users?

I love how they're always so SUBTLE.

Mojo 10-25-2007 12:40 PM

Hmm, there should be a topic about the Glass Asylum split up. Try a search.

The forums were started by Abe Babe and Sydney, AIRC, then Alcar joined up.

At some point, there was a disagreeance (is that even a word, or did I just made it up?), and Sydney and some other schmucks started a new forum (now here's a familiar feeling XD).

As for the moderators, most of them are elected by the rest of you forumites. I, myself was elected OWH Moderator, beating Oddguy by a vote or two XD.
but sometimes, one of the Admins feel they need to appoint someone. Either because they find someone suitable, or because there's a lack of suitable members for election XD.

As for the Oddworld Inhabitants; yes, some OWI people have joined this forum, to keep up with what fans think or want. Or to just keep in touch. It's been a while since we have had a post by one of them, though. You can identify them by their green custom title.

Hobo 10-25-2007 12:57 PM

I wasn't voted into this position either time i've held it but was once RPG mod *shame*

Splat 10-25-2007 01:55 PM

In the old days when men were real men, women were real women and forum trolls were real forum trolls and Sydney was administrator (and creator) of the site, she banned a member for some offence. Many people thoguht she was wrong to ban that member and the other Admins, Abe Babe and Alcar I believe, removed her administrator title (since they were admins it was possible for them to do that). Sydney and a lot of members who supported her went off to make another forum called 'the glass asylum' which as far as I know ultimately died.

oh, and Mojo, I think the word you're looking for is disagreement.
The forum was made by fans, not OWI, though the member Alf was an employee of OWI, the same one who did the 'Ask Alf' section of the old OWI website, who appeared occasionally, though he hasn't been around for a loooooong time.

Mods used to be elected by the members once a year for any positions that needed filling, though this eventually ended up simply with too many moderators, so that came to an end. Now most mods are usually selected by other moderators/admins. If you've been a member for a long time (as in over at least a year, usually two), are still active and have proven yourself to be a valuable member then you might get chosen as a mod.
I will say that all moderators were at the very leat mature when they were chosen for the role, even if they've got a bit mad since.

Best way ever of starting a post about Sydney

That's a story I've never heard. Thanks for sharing. What happened to Abe Babe anyway? Has she quit the forums?

Mac Sirloin 10-25-2007 04:28 PM

She went and married a lifesize model of Sephiroth.

Now this I don't get. Kastere clearly mentioned Sydney, spelling it with a 'Y'. How on earth can you have such bad spelling as to misspell a name in the immediately previous post?

Other than that; what everyone else said.

Mac Sirloin 10-25-2007 05:55 PM

Including my most former post?
Actually, I deem that slightly more likely than I would like to think about.

Anyway, what's important is who's here now.

Lol, yes right. I'd only want to be a moderator if I got paid, sad but true.

Laser 10-26-2007 11:32 AM

Not mad at all ;)

with a quote on his profile calling himself a dick :P

anyway even though they can be annoying i'm glad for new people to ask these questions because i (naturally) had no idea how this place started.

Splat has been the RPG and Fan Corner moderator for roughly over a year. Ever since June of 2006, I believe.

By choice, I assume you mean choose. Splat, first of all, accepted the role as a moderator when it was given to him. He did not nominate himself for election for moderator. Instead, he proceeded the old RPG moderator, T-Nex. In fact, nearly the entire (current) board of moderators was not elected, but promoted by the administors due to their choice.

:

I highly doubt it. She would have informed Alcar or the entire board of her leave and dismiss her administor powers(if that is even possible). Her last posts have nearly nothing to do with a leave.

She does check in ever so often. Her last visit was August 30, 2007.

Mac Sirloin 10-26-2007 03:22 PM

Where? I was hoping to make a crack at her about her Final Fantasy obsession.

Yup, thar goes my account...

Yeah, you'd never become a mod then. You don't get paid to be a mod, you have to pay.

But not in a numismatic or monetary way...

Heh, I was voted into my position at first :)

Slaveless 10-27-2007 01:03 PM

I guess so. But aside from you and Rexy, I do believe everyone else was promoted to their current position.

Wil 10-27-2007 01:36 PM

I was voted in, too. Then I took a leave of absense, suggesting to Alcar that he demote me, as I was never planning to take up my duties again, but it wasn’t soon after I returned and saw the state of Oddworld Discussion that I requested (and was immediately given back) my old position. :)

Oh, and that’s not a knock at Xav’s mod skills; OD was just saturated with idiots at the time. :p

Al the Vykker 11-05-2007 04:09 PM

I was voted into my position in Fan Corner along with "Alector" (no longer a moderator) by people who voted in a forum-wide election about 5 years ago. This of course was soon after the forum schism which left vacancies for new moderators.

Hobo your posts make me smile as usual.

Nate 11-05-2007 04:50 PM

I was brought in as a temporary mod of GD when Max and Xav were on holidays. Not long after there were elections for a new OT mod for which I think I was doing fairly well until Alcar decided that GD needed a new mod as well and shuffled me over there. So I was sorta voted in and sorta appointed from above. Certainly my promotion to whatever position it is that I hold now was an Appointment By Dictatorship.

mitsur 11-05-2007 07:42 PM

I don't really think I'd like to be a mod. Well, no, that's a lie. I'd enjoy being a mod, but I wouldn't enjoy having to deal with all the crap they put up with lately. So I'm one of those guys who wants power without the difficulty. How selfish of me.

Crap. My train of thought just ran out on me. It had something to do with the fan fiction section, but I forgot. Ho hum, I must be getting senile in my old age.

If I had to critique one thing about the staff, though, it'd be that I haven't seen Rich at all so far. I miss his deadpan sarcasm.

Havoc 11-10-2007 03:20 PM

I think I was one of the few current staff member who was appointed. I believe T-nex suggested me as moderator for FC and there I went, sitting in the FC throne. :P

moxco 11-10-2007 05:13 PM

If I were a mod I would be a necrum mod. That way I could have authority and not have to do anything.

mitsur 11-10-2007 08:20 PM

You stole that from Ghost.

Splat 11-11-2007 02:52 AM

I probably got my position because no other moderator of the forum is interested in RPGing anymore. Basically years ago, the current RPG mod vanished off the face of the Earth for a while and the RPG section bascially exploded due to a complete lack of moderation. T-nex was appointed the emergency replacement moderator, probalby cus she was the most active member in the forum at the time. When she left she suggested me as a replacement.
Not entirely sure why I got the FC job as well, but years ago when they still did the election system I applied for the position and got about 1 vote (from myself:p). I was, when I first joined, very active in FC so I guess that's why I got it now.

Something about being a mod always appealed to my tyrannical nature, and it has been fun. I don't know if its because I'm secretly deep down a power-mad, tyrannical lunatic, or cus it means when I see someone breaking rules I can do something about it, rather than having to leave it to someone else.
Plus I get to see all the sordid goings-on of the employee lounge. Every student in the world wants to see what's going on in the employee lounge.

dripik 11-11-2007 05:08 AM

I remember the times when Xav was appointed. That was around when I joined the Forums.

:

Oh, and that’s not a knock at Xav’s mod skills; OD was just saturated with idiots at the time.

Hmm... Any specific names? Just for nostalgic purposes...

After my GD era, I got into the RPG section. Back then, Rexy was in charge there. I always liked the idea of being a mod there, but never reached the title. After Rexy came Hobo... Then Red Muse... Then T-nex... Then Splat... In the last two years, RPG modship was appointment-based, if I remember right.

Luckily, I grew out of my modship-related aspirations. I wouldn't have the time and the interest anyway.

Laser 11-11-2007 06:27 AM

didn't Ghost become a mod because he constantly annoyed everyone about it?

hmm that gives me an idea...

Havoc 11-11-2007 07:07 AM

The last thing you'll become is a mod if you keep whining about it. In fact you're more likely to receive a ban before you are appointed a moderator...

mitsur 11-11-2007 10:16 AM

I believe the only reason Ghost wasn't banned is because he gave each thing he posted in an eccentric flair.

Yeah, remember when Ghost was ceaselessly campaigning for being the mod of Burial Grounds? And then nate finally gave it to him for about a month.

Havoc 11-11-2007 12:11 PM

I seem to have missed that? When was this?

Nate 11-11-2007 02:15 PM

Well... I changed his Custom Title to say he was Necrum mod. Seeing as Necrum only contains dead threads, he didn't think it odd that he had no powers at all.
