What kind of kind of books do you read?
Oh, well, in the middle of the hot summer, what's better than a few lame threads on "What Do You Like"s. So what kind of books do you read or like, if at all?
-Spirrow |
I read a diverse range.
At the moment I am reading The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Alcar... |
Well, I read a lot of different books. I enjoy reading Manga, Action/Adventure, Fantasy, Mystery, Suspence, and Sci-Fi.
The most recent book I have read was "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows". |
I try to read as little as possible. It endangers your health after a while :D
But I believe the last book I read was a few months ago, a twin novel, Psmith, Journalist and Leave it to Psmith, by P.G. Wodehouse. Excellent comedy. My favourite author. He also wrote the Jeeves books, dunno if anyone ever read those, but they're also some of my favourites. I like more lighthearted stuff. |
I don't have a fixed liking. If I come across a book in a bookstore I like then I'll buy it and read it. Sometimes I won't even like it afterwards. For example, I bought a CSI book once and didn't read more then 2 pages. Trust me the books are a lot LESS interesting then the TV Series.
I just ordered the second book of the TV Show Las Vegas from the internets and awaiting to arive it in the mail. |
i like reading books by Jack Higgins or Clive Cussler, which are mostly thrillers, but if i want a good laugh i read Terry Pratchett's discworld novels.
|
I enjoy horror books, although I have a hard time finding ones I like. I like humor books, such as the ones written by David Sedaris and George Carlin. I've been getting into H.P Lovecraft's science fiction books.
Of course, I still enjoy many of my childhood favorites, such as the Harry Potter novels and various comic books (such as Chobits and Bobobo). |
I enjoy Classic stories (Robin Hood, a 1940s book by Howard Pyle I believe), action/adventure (Harry Potter) and occasional episode guides, as well as plenty of others. But of course the last I've read was "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows".
|
Whatchoo readin fer?
|
Edit:
I read plenty of Sci-fi books like iRobot, and those books definately aren't worth buying. The work of Asimov just doesn't seem that impressive. |
William S Burroughs, almost exclusively.
|
I don't really read any particular genre. I tend to enjoy horror and the macabre though. I've recently started reading H.P. Lovecraft. I guess I've acquired a taste for early fantasy/science-fiction writers like him. I also have enjoyed some contemporary fantasy like Harry Potter, the Bartimaeus Trilogy, and Wicked.
|
:
As for me, I tend to mostly read fantasy books, though not of the swords-and-sandals type. My favourite authors are Terry Pratchett and Isobelle Carmody. I also like Robert Rankin but he's been going downhill lately. |
Why do all gay guys like Terry Pratchett!
|
Books I own:
"The Complete Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe" American Library's "H.P. Lovecraft: Tales" ... Yeah, I'm not a big reader. |
I read Fantasy and Scince Fiction novels.
“Tod und Teufel” (Death and Devil) from Frank Schaetzing, for the moment. |
holy christ i read so many different types of books
but at the mo i'm reading "The Tales of Gotrek and Felix" or something like that I have a very wide range but i mainly like fantasy books |
Epic norse tales.
800 page books about wars involving gods FTW. |
Looks like we got ourselves some readers.

I read books with words. Seriously people, that's all you gotta say.
[/sarcasticidiot] I actually enjoy Sci-fi books, or action, or suspense. Although I usually read any type, but those are my favorite. |
:
Burroughs' last entry in his journal, written a couple of days before he died, simply read: "Love? What is it? The most natural painkiller there is. LOVE." I love that, what a fantastic man. |
I don’t read anywhere as much as I’d love to. I never seem to have both the time and the mood at the same time. I consider myself to be two books into the Dune series, three books into the Discworld series, and completely up to date with Rob Grant’s novels. Apart from that, there are a dozen novels I’d love to get familiar with, but… time and mood.
|
I enjoy fantasy books, I'm currently waiting for the next Ian Irvine book, The curse on the Chosen.
|
How can you limit yourselves??? Though i must admit i'm going thru a fantasy phase atm...just finishing Dark Heavens trilogy by Kylie Chan...not bad for a first timer author imo. Also reading Salvatore, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and working thru the works of Feist....tis a good combination!
|
DOUGLAS MF ADAMS.
Specifically the original five book long hitchhikers trilogy. A million little pieces was excellent, however untrue some of the details were. |
Hmmm... Let's see... What've I been reading lately? Shakespeare, Dante, Da Vinci Code...
|
I've been reading Stephen King almost exclusively lately. The Dark Tower series is excellent, and all the stand-alones are always entertaining.
|
:
|
I might get the hitchhikers series from the library one day, but who knows if I'll like it.
As I mentioned above, I enjoy reading classical literature books, history books, science books and occasionally books on robot-related things. |
I've read almost everything from Lovecraft
Howard is kind of funny too :p |
For me: Sci-Fi/Fantasy books.
Teery Goodkinds books are AWESOME. |
I read 1984 by George Orwell this week. I had read it before when I was about 12 but seeing as that was 14 years ago I didn't remember much. I also doubt that the book had the same effect on me then as it did now. This book is so beautifully written and so fully realized that reading it is probably the most horrifying experience of my life. It's the fact that it is pitch perfect that makes it so horrible. When Winston finally betrays Julia I swear to god I cried a little. He held out for so long and tried so hard to just keep her alive inside himself despite everything else they took away from them and in the end they took even that. The last line of the book left me in a depressed stupor for about two days.
Damn you, Orwell. Damn you and your brilliance. |
William S Burroughs once commented in The Western Lands about 1984's idea of: "If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face--for ever."
Burroughs debunked this idea of control as ridiculous and totally unsustainable. I wish I still had the quote, but I gave my book away. |
Even in 1984 Orwell says (through his main character) That eventually this government will fail. That there is no way to sustain this type of oppresion. I was more struck by the horror that was perpetrated on Winston than I was frightened by the prospect of living in a world like this.
|
This rings a bell.
I've only seen the so-so film with John Hurt, and when he's having his turn on the rack he says something to that effect. |
Haven't seen the movie and didn't know that John Hurt was in it. I might check it out. I like John Hurt.
|
Need to revisit 1984. I only read it 2,3 years ago, but i think i'd get a different vision of it now.
|
the students amongst us may like to read books by Tom Sharpe (porterhouse blue etc) the guy has a very dry wit,and is very, very, funny.
|
books? ... you're joking right?
jokes yeah, at the moment I'm swamped with work, so I realy had time for reading school books, which can be pretty good like how to kill a mocking bird, and reading animal farm soon. I read harry potter recently though (well, I am 15) and 1984- good book, but kinda wierd how *spoilers* the baddies kinda win, and there all hope is disbaneded in the book. interesting how most of the fictional media (expecially movies) seem to have happy endings filled with joy, and if not that, hope. things have realy changed since george owells time. and yes, I know he says the government will fail, but then again, he gets kinda cut when he is asked why, and he admits to not believing in god, and therefore pointing out the meaningless in life, and how there realy is no hope, or reason to do or have good. |
