Alec's new Artwork

Howdy!

I thought it's time to make a new topic about my oddworld based drawings since the other one seems so old and grey for me already. Hrm.
Currently, I like working with technical pencils on several types of paper. Yesterday, I found really old sketchbooks and browsed through them. There were many drawings about Sligs and Mudokons the forums have never seen before. I will post them in this topic amongst other things.

The newest picture, which is going to start this topic just got copied by my scanner and made another ordeal through Photoshop. Sometimes the scanner stresses me and Photoshop is able to bring the most perverted brightness/contrast-flaws to daylight.
I'm still pleased with the result and what it looks like on the web.

The picture is about an elder Steef with lots of hair and big horns. lol
He doesn't seem to be too relaxed, though or he thinks how he could calculate the math homework for his children. lol. No. It meant to be another mystical picture, this time about a Steef.
It took me 8 hours. The second picture is a close-up of his head, a little fiew into the details, if you like. :)

Have fun looking.

BTW, the little poll is interesting to see what you think about the fanart. :fuzwink:

Creepy Doc 09-13-2006 06:11 AM

Alector, your art is really impressive and I like it!

:

Even I voted the second one, I only meant that some pictures of you have too less action I think. But your fantasy to draw your creatures and their anatomy are just perfect! :)

Dancing Steef 09-13-2006 07:44 AM

I completely agree with creepy Doc - Yer drawings are fabulous :D:D:D!!!

Cullen Heath 09-13-2006 07:52 AM

Wow, that's very good. Probably the best art that the Forums have ever seen.

Dusan 09-13-2006 11:32 AM

Great work you have there alector. There are one typical problem tough, hands. That position of hands is very hard, allmost impossible to draw. Details level is great.... so typical for you :). One question: Can you, or does anybody can draw eyes looking at you (if you know what I mean, so hard for me to explain)
Keep impressing us..... best

Bonedust 09-13-2006 05:10 PM

Your pictures look great.

Matriar 09-14-2006 01:45 AM

Respect! It's amazing (as always)!

I totally agree with that. :)

Howdy *blushes*

I'm really surprised about the sweet comments. The question about the more action in my drawings got nice answers. That's what I asked myself. I need more movings or just a little bit more action in them. I currently work on new pictures, which are for the book fair 2007 in Leipzig.
It's the first time I enter the contest and I'm really excited because of this.
There are a few months space before they start. Lot's of time to improve. :p

The hands of the Steef are a little bit weird to me, though. But actually, they have somethign unique. He pressed the fingertips together, the palms don't touch themselves. i should show it from above. For me, it's a little bit hard to draw Steef hands. I don't like drawing hands at all...lol

The next picture is a Mudokon Tomahawker. Yeah, you just read Mudokon. I haven't drawn those for ages. It was quite funny working on it while DarkHood watched me ;)

It started with a random biro scribbling, which I drew on bristol board after.

Have fun

Alector

Matriar 09-14-2006 02:02 AM

Wow, that's great! Mystical. I love the face of the left picture.
The face of the right mudokons reminds me somehow of a ninija turtle .

Alector 09-14-2006 06:36 AM

Lol! Thanks, mate. :D
I can't really see that the face of teh right Mud looks like a Ninja Turtle, but it's funny.

I'm the drawing express. Dancing Steef, your order:
I hope the colourings are ok so. Tell me, if something should get changed and ask me, if something is unclear

Matriar 09-14-2006 09:18 AM

They look very charming so I think. :)

Zerox 09-14-2006 10:00 AM

*dies with shock at pic quality*
Personally, I think there's more detail in the monochrome ones, though.
*dies again*
Deviantart. Now.

Mecharaptor 09-16-2006 04:16 AM

I see your drawing skills have improved since last I viewed your work.
Nice stuff indeed Alector.

Creepy Doc 09-16-2006 06:33 AM

Amazing drawing skills...

Alector 09-18-2006 05:34 AM

Howdy! Thanks a lot for this!
It means a lot to me. ;)

And what a surprise to see you again, Naxos. Long time no see. lol

The next picture is just a practice for a new colouring technique. This Steef shows off with his looking. lol.

Have fun looking.

Matriar 09-18-2006 07:59 AM

Hehe, that facial expression made me laugh ! What a charming show-off.

Creepy Doc 09-19-2006 05:48 AM

"Yeah, I'm the best! I'm the champion! Nobody can mess with me!", that's what that expression calls out to the world.

Al the Vykker 09-20-2006 01:55 PM

Glad to have not only yourself back but your wonderful artwork as well Alec! :)

DarkHoodness 09-20-2006 03:44 PM

Can't really say much else to Claudi here that I haven't already over DA or MSN, but amazing work as always. . . Chocolate for the Eyes. :D

Still people, you should of seen the way she did that Mudokon Tomahawker pic - It was a real honor to sit next to her and watch her draw that one. :) The way she acheives things like that in such a short ammount of time is purely amazing - One of the things I love about her I guess. ;) Watching her draw is an experiance, to be said.

(BTW sweetie, I've said this before but it's nice to see you try out new styles and watch your artwork improve with every drawing. . . The new colouring styles are different, maybe a little too bold in parts, but they look amazing - And we can still tell it's your work. :) *nuzzles* Keep at it.)

Steef Head 09-20-2006 05:10 PM

Wow. that is some of the best art ive ever seen :) dang i wish i could draw like that!

Dancing Steef 09-26-2006 12:45 PM

:eek:OMG!!!! *dances and jumps around of never ending happiness* Thank you so much Alector!!! I'm... I don't know what to say... I'm so grateful hurray for Alector!! :cheer:

I'll send the next order to you by tomorrow or the next day after tomorrow - see ya then :)

~DS~

Alector 09-27-2006 01:07 AM

Howdy! I'm glad you like the pictures. :)
Yeah, I can't wait to see the next two orders. It's nice colouring your work, I like your style of drawing Steefs.

I currently work on a special picture of Stranger with a few ...other characters. It's a typical fanart with no selfmade characters. I just can hint: Last Legs

:p

Creepy Doc 09-27-2006 02:39 AM

Sounds interesting. I can image that situation is inspiring to draw pictures about...

Alector 09-28-2006 01:45 AM

Aaah, drawn into the night, shadows behind me and the darkness surrounding me. Only the blue light of the screen and the green eyes of Stranger kept me awake.
I was really inspired by some music that reminded me on Last Legs. The music was similar to it and since it's one of my most favourite tracks in the game but unfortunately not downloadable, I got this inspiration of the following picture.

It more reminds me of the scene after the last fight against Sekto, the Dam but it should be on the way to Last Legs.
It's very cold in that scene and snowy, that's why they all wear winter clothes. My most favourite Grubb is the one on the right behind stranger with the yellow-orange cap over the face. The guardian at the front and the Grubbs behind him with laterns they guide the way through the misty grounds.

It was really funny working on the picture. It took me 8 hours only, scribbling inclusive. For me, Grubbs are easier to draw than Stranger. I always have small problems giving his eyes this typical mystical Stranger look.
The weather isn't the best but the colours of the Grubb's clothing should rounden it a little bit. ;)

Do Grubbs have a good taste of clothing? In my opinion, yes. :p
Have fun.

Wow, that picture rocks! :D (I freeze when I look at it...)

That's really impassionate.
Almost like me when I drew. Red-eyed, after midnight, a little tired of 6 hours computer work... but still motivated to continue with my work.

Okay, never try be like that. I'm just too impassionate. :)

Creepy Doc 09-28-2006 07:26 AM

Woah, you rock!

Steef Head 09-28-2006 11:55 AM

Wow! Thats awesome! :D even the way that you did the backround was really good ;)

Creepy Doc 09-29-2006 03:00 AM

Alector, did you ever go to an art school? Or something?

Alector 09-29-2006 04:11 AM

Thanks to all of you! Creepy Dog, no, I never went to an art school though i wish I did. Always taught myself stuff. Art schools here were too expensive since they are all private. So, i was forced to be autodidactical and teach myself the skills. There are still many things to improve. But thanks for the compliment. :)

The next picture is for Dancing Steef again. The lineart is by her and the colouring by me. You should know about teh character ;)
Have fun

Dancing Steef 09-29-2006 10:16 AM

Waaooow!!!! *dances with joy* It's so beautiful Alector thankyou, thankyou, thankyou!!!! *ads to fav* :D:D:D:D Great job with the coloring!

Creepy Doc 09-30-2006 06:23 AM

That is great!

His eyes look so realistic.

Matriar 09-30-2006 06:38 AM

It's cool! I just think the horns look incorrect... you know, the way how they spin. But else, it's really nice! :)

Arxryl 10-03-2006 02:24 PM

wow! Great job! All of these pictures look amazing!

Cullen Heath 10-03-2006 06:25 PM

My goodness! Just fantastic, Alector! Would you mind telling me each and every step that you take in creating your art?

Alector 10-07-2006 11:21 AM

Thanks for all the nice comments. :D
This tiome, I don't have a new picture. Shame on me, I know but a new one will come soon. I currently have this fetish for drawing Grubbs. Hehe.

Anyway, Cullen. If I would tell you each step of my art, you would have to read a lot. Best thing is to watch someone drawing. One day, I will do some traditional art tutorials, though. Important is that you first have to improve your skills and practice a lot until you got your own unique style. Everyone has an own style , that's what I meant.
I always stick on details, which is the reason that it takes so long to finish a picture. I need to learn not to lose myself into them to get otherresults, though. But I'm happy that you like my art.
Maybe you have some specific questions of how I work. ;)

Cullen Heath 10-07-2006 11:49 AM

Well, you use Photoshop, right? I was wondering, more what the steps are that you do after you had drawn the actual picture, for you art to end up like this?

Creepy Doc 10-08-2006 09:51 AM

Alector, you starts to talk like a real artist!

Alector 10-08-2006 01:29 PM

Thanks, Creepy Dog, even for this. Hehe. I re-read the last post and actually didn't see anything which could sound like an artist. ;)
Maybe you're the artist to see things like that. Hehe

Cullen Heath, it depends, if I want to do a digital drawing or painting.
For paintings, paint over the lineart on layers above so that the main drawing isn't visible anymore in the end. For the latest picture, I scribbled the outline with a smooth pencil and painted on layers below. The outline layer was set on multiply so that I could see what to do. I used a wide transparent brush with a low pressure to get that result. Sometimes, I mix brushes, use hard ones or airbrush for the background.
It's always a sense of the picture content and what technique I chose. There are so many techniques you can you there, it's incredible. :)
