DVD's- Are they taking over videos?

Round my area, loads of video shops are closing down. How soon do you think DVD's will take over?

Rex Tirano 06-27-2006 10:21 AM

Balatantly. Better sound, quality of image and a hell of a lot more space. They have interactive menus and are much better than videos in every way.

I have no sympathy for these video shops which are closing down. It's already been said that the DVD will take over videos and in several years VCRs and VHS tapes will become obsolete. They should move with the times and sell DVDs.

It's plain common sense.

I agree, DVD's are way better, but I'll still miss my old video player. *Sigh*

Rex Tirano 06-27-2006 10:25 AM

Why did you throw it out? I think that VHS will be obsolete in several years time but why waste money and throw out tapes and buy the DVD equivelent when your VCR works perfectally well?

You can still buy VCRs, they're quite cheap now.

I didn't throw it out, it broke, but I never got a new one. I just replaced it with a DVD player.

Mutual Friend 06-27-2006 12:50 PM

What are you jabbering about? DVDs have already taken over. BBC Worldwide (for instance) stopped producing videos since 2003. It's all about Blu-Ray and HD-DVD now.

Patrick Vykkers 06-27-2006 03:43 PM

DVD Revolution

They are definitely taking over, if not already fully taken over. Most so called video rental stores actually have roughly 70% of their stock in DVDS. Even then, normally about 10% to 15% is games for rent, so that leaves 20% to 15% VHS. They'll probably become extinct in the next four years

AquaticAmbi 06-27-2006 06:04 PM

I always feel some sort of sympathy for people that try to stick with the ways of the old, but the businesses you speak of should have finally realized they needed to switch over to DVDs before it was too late.

I still have some old movies on VHS and a VHS player, but I rarely ever use them.

SeaRex 06-27-2006 06:58 PM

Video stores... shutting down? Do they just refuse to sell DVDs or something?

Daxter King 06-27-2006 09:02 PM

I really dont think Blu-Ray will catch on. DVDs were miles ahead of VHS tapes when they came out, Blu-Ray isn't that much better a little more storage and minimal definition differince. Yes(DVDs have taken over), the only reason I have a VCR is to tape things(too cheep for Tivo)

Leto 06-27-2006 10:37 PM

I don't know about Bluray. Could go the same way as laserdisk, but perhaps not. Then again, so could HD DVD. It's all just a matter of time.

Havoc 06-28-2006 02:58 AM

Well thats just plain stupid. If I would own a store/bussiness I'd go with the flow and start selling/renting DVD's. The video rental around the corner here called 'Videoland' could better be called DVDland because the store in my street here threw out all their video's last year and went to renting soley DVD's. I don't even have a video player anymore, but I do have a lot of tapes which I will be putting on eBay! Yay eBay!

Ninjaxe 06-28-2006 05:34 AM

Well...its not really gone. Just wondering have they release DVD recording over here in America or UK? If not  feeling proud.

I am sure people do all their recording of movies and programme on vhs still. I think countries are taking one step at a time. A little birdie told me that 'in the year 2010 every household is going to own a HD TV. So what I saying once that is adapted maybe the latest DVD player will be part of the household. Is the new sky digital connected to something? How does that work? I have telewest so it works different.

plus with all the tape gone...it really hard to get the old junk back. The classic personal stereo (cassette). These are really hard to find. Mp3 players are the latest range. I have an ipod nano¬_¬its a franchise now...it annoys me that they could releasing and releasing. Its like buying a phone...you can't catch up!!! Sorry I am rambling..:)

I think it's mainly because videos aren't bringing in enough money, so when they started selling DVD's they became absolutely rich. So they had to choose: money or none.

I work for Blockbuster and we finally within the past month got rid of all the VHS that were left (only in the family section). Back when I started in April, we still rented out VHS to people then we had a massive sale in June and on June 16th all of the VHS were destroyed. I think it's been a slow death for VHS ever since DVD has become the industry norm.

I suppose everyone wants the newest and best technology now.

Bullet Magnet 06-28-2006 08:12 AM

DVD will also be replaced. I recon it will be either:

HD-DVD
Blu-ray

~or~

FMD: Fluorescent Multilayer Disk.

A lot of things are being replaced nowadays.

Havoc 06-28-2006 02:13 PM

DVD will be the norm for another 5 years or so, and after that technology will go to fast and we will have 6 diffrent kinds of medium...

You do know that isn't true. They will just make more advanced computers, I really doubt they will get replaced.

OANST 06-29-2006 11:24 AM

Wrong again. We are going to have brain implants that automatically connect to the world wide web. Supervilliany arise!

Kamille 06-29-2006 12:57 PM

dvds are cheap enough now that i can't see how they won't replace vhs, or better yet how they didn't already

Facsimile 06-29-2006 10:06 PM

Have some of you guys been living in a cave? DVDs took over years ago.

And what kind of dumbass runs a video store but refuses to stock DVDs?

Havoc 06-30-2006 12:13 AM

WTF!? Since when did this delightfully 'intelectual' discussion on DVDs start being a stupid[er] thread about what nationality you are.

z0mg. LV you hate your countries stereotype? Get over it. According to stereotype I have a stiff upper lip, say pip-pip, smoke pipes and wear tweed.

Every country has a stereotype. Accept it, grow up and move on. You might not like it but it doesn't affect you in anyway.

Lord Vulcher 07-01-2006 08:34 AM

Well, I think we can safely say that videos aren't going to be around for much longer.

Rex Tirano 07-01-2006 09:12 AM

Well done LV. You read the thread. *Applause*
