Oddworld Music Rips

I've recorded the music from the first two games. The completion of these rips is questionable, because recording Oddworld games isn't easy at all - some of you who have tried probably know what I'm talking about. I'm also working on some more Oddworld games and hopefully I'll be able to share those upcoming rips too. Download links are found at the bottom of this post.

I've also noticed that some of you don't know how to open the files. The following is a short tutorial on how to open the files and play the music;
1) The file you download is a .rar file. It's an archive and it contains all the songs.
2) In order to open the archive and view/extract the contents, you will need WinRAR. Download it here.
3) Install WinRAR.
4) Open the archive.
5) Select the folder within the archive and press the Extract button. Extract the folder onto your local harddrive.
6) You no longer need to access the archive in order to play the songs. Dispose of it if you need to.
7) In order to play the songs, you will need an .mp3 player of some kind. Usually, Windows Media Player works, but if it isn't configured properly, you might as well go with WinAmp.
8) WinAmp is the .mp3 player everyone should have. Download it here.
9) Having installed WinRAR and WinAmp, you should now be able to play the songs
10) Still don't get it? Then my life's a joke. Go ahead. Contact me or something.

Here is some information about each rip:
Side-note: Monochrome is my former alias.

I believe you need to wait approximately 50 seconds before a download link appears near the right corner. If a pop-up window is blocking that link, just click the X button of that pop-up window and then download the file. It's all there, just be patient.

Hmm, that's weird, I can download the files without any difficulties...

EDIT: Works fine for me, you need to reaccess the link and wait again. I think you might have timed out while you posted in the forums, that's why the link expired temporarily. It's still there though. Patience..

Wil 05-15-2006 02:01 PM

Argh! This megaupload thing is a toughie. It's full of framesets and animations that don't appear very nicely to me. It also refuses to download anything onto my IP address. The Oddworld music is once again so close, yet so far…

Keep trying, Killy. Right now this is pretty much the holy grail of the fandom's desire. Except the film and more games, maybe perhaps. ;) If the worst comes to the worst, I have space you can host your work on.

Before I download them; how are these different from the last three times I've downloaded rips from these games?

I don't know, download and see. Or rather, hear. Concerning the Oddysee rip - it's incomplete when compared to the original soundtrack, however I believe the Exoddus rip is closer to completion, because I had collected far more samples than for the Oddysee rip.

If you take a look at the dates these rips were released, you'll see there's well over a year between the releases - meaning there's a huge difference in experience behind the production of these rips.

I haven't listened to any other rips before, I had little luck finding any earlier, but my rips are from the PSX version, which means the music is not from the ported versions and should thus be pure compared to any PC recordings.

I beg to differ.

FuzzleByte01 05-17-2006 12:04 PM

Great job. :) These had to have taken a lot of work and patience. It's great to even have a semi-complete soundtrack for these games. I made a complete soundtrack for Stranger's Wrath once, and it took quite a while to finish. I know that the first two games would've had to have been a great deal more difficult...

I really hope you've extracted the files onto your harddrive first. Opening the .rar file and double-clicking a file will only place it in a temporary folder. Hit extract and select a folder.

scrab queen 05-17-2006 05:24 PM

don't have that option. i may need a whole new computer.

Killy 05-17-2006 05:31 PM

:

No... I wouldn't go that far. OK, let's start over. You download the file linked in my first post. That file is a .rar file. It's an archive and all the music files are included in that archive. In order to open the archive and extract the contents, you will need WinRAR (http://www.rarlab.com/rar/wrar351.exe). Download the WinRAR installation file and install the program. After that, open the .rar file you downloaded, select the folder within the archive and then click the Extract button. Then select a path on your local harddrive and click OK. Done.

Killy 07-14-2006 05:53 PM

I've released a new rip, nothing overproductive like last time though, this is a very small one. It's a rip of Munch's Oddysee for the Game Boy Advance. Please note that, I don't want people asking for a rip of the Xbox version, at least not yet. However, I do plan on ripping it as well, but for now, this will hopefully keep most of you satisfied. There are some really nice tunes in this one.

I do hope you enjoy this one.

I haven't been able to get in touch with Max yet about uploading this one to the server, I need to reconfigure my settings. So for now, I've uploaded the rip to several free online-hosting servers. These links are only temporary, but I'll update them when needed.

Xavier 07-15-2006 03:08 PM

thank you for this :D
I always like your rips :)

Jordan 07-16-2006 03:36 AM

I've listened to them all, they are fantastic! How do you rip music from games? I've always wondered how you did.

Matriar 07-16-2006 03:40 AM

Is there also a way to rip the music of SW? I just wonder...

Killy 07-16-2006 04:38 AM

Xavier: Thanks for the nice feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed them! :)

Some games can be ripped by using format specific software on the computer. You scan the disc, extract the music, edit and then release it. But the Oddworld games are far more complicated than that. They require a line-in setup. This means that you connect the stereo cables of the console to the line-in port of your soundcard and record while playing the game. It's a very simple setup, but it's a far more tedious and demanding task because you actually have to play the game and record all the music. It's fun though, for a while, then you get bored and mentally deteriorated.

The Game Boy Advance rip is somewhat easier, you can emulate it on the computer and the just log the sound as .wav files. Simple, but questionable, since there's no way to confirm if the ROM dump was correct or not.

I'm quite sure Stranger's Wrath is rippable using a line-in setup, but it takes more than that to finish a rip and make it sound good. It requires some technical experience in the sound departement and you need to be able to work in a studio, editing, copying, pasting, sampling, mixing and whatnot. I've heard of a few SW rips here and there, but nothing that confirms a complete rip.

Matriar 07-16-2006 05:07 AM

Oh... okay.

Killy 07-16-2006 05:14 AM

:

Oh... okay.

Okay? Well, I guess I'm making this sound a whole lot complicated, but I'm planning on ripping SW so you can wait for that or go ahead and do your own recording :) I'd be glad to help, so feel free to ask any more questions. I have some illustrations that might help you understand how to connect cables and stuff like that.

Jordan 07-16-2006 05:18 AM

Ripping seems really complicated, I've gotta try it some day, some 365 days.

Killy 07-16-2006 05:27 AM

Actually, I'd recommend you never get into it in the first place.
:

It's fun though, for a while, then you get bored and mentally deteriorated.
There's not much to it, believe me. You'll end up missing out on alot in your life. I know I have. I'm qutting as soon as I finish this batch of projects.

This is a short one too, but it's an Oddworld game, nevertheless. There's some nice tunes in it, although it's not the kind of instrumentation you'd normally hear in an Oddworld game. Keep in mind that it's for the GameBoy Color, so don't expect the Budapest Symphonic Orchestra. I like these songs; Paramite Vault, Cobwebs, Possession and Ending ~ It's Not Fair!.

Enjoy.
