Previously Unheard of Games/Games with low or zero mainstream press coverage...

Do you know of any good games like this? If so, list them here. (any platform but preferably PC)

Mine at the moment are;

Guild Wars.
Constructor.
Fallout 1 & 2.
Overboard. (somewhat fun)

I can't actually think of any others but I'm sure you've all got some good ones.

Rich 07-17-2005 08:42 AM

:

Constructor.

I have that on PS1! Definitely one of my favourite games ever!

I believe that Red Faction on PS2 deserves more credit, destroying levels is hella-fun! :p

SeaRex 07-17-2005 09:06 AM

Guild Wars is definitely gaining momentum in America. It ranks pretty far up in the sales charts and G4 is constantly talking about it. I never cared for MMORPGs, so I wouldn't know either way, though. :p

As for "underground" games that I like, what else can I say besides...

JET SET RADIO! adio... adio... adio...

Back in the Dreamcast days, I was in love with that game. It got to a point where I could literally come home every day after school and beat it in a matter of hours. And I did. Every day.

Loved it.

Dino 07-17-2005 11:01 AM

Oh yeah, JSR was awesome. I played that so obsessively that I basically became one of the characters in real life... I got some awesome looking aggressive skates (don't have them anymore :(), and totally did the graffiti scene for reals. :D Me and a couple friends would race each other to the bottom of town from the top, and whoever did the most sick tricks on the way down won.

Then we realised that we were being totally sad and stopped.

But still good memories... that's why I love games like that. Like, Wipeout 2097, me and a buddy totally got into that, and we'd drink nothing but the sponsor Red Bull energy drink while we were playing it. Haha god damn so lame. :D

Cyber-Slig 07-17-2005 11:37 AM

Guild Wars is terrible. It's hardly even a MMORPG, you only get to see/interact with other players in your group. And the areas are restricted, e.g. there's a barrier that stops you from getting in forests etc.

As for under-rated games, I loved Goblin Commander, such a simple RTS, but the ability to go 3rd-person with a troop was fun as Hell.

Hobo 07-17-2005 12:08 PM

Constructor on PS rocked. But was annoying with the PS controls, which made it neigh unplayable

Fallout 1&2 are ultimate.

Planescape Torment > every other game. Ever.

Leto 07-17-2005 01:43 PM

Guild Wars.
Watchu talkin' 'bout, Dino? Guild Wars had HUGE advertising over at Gamespot. It was the only ad I saw for a month or two. Roughly two months ago. :p

Really?

Gamespot is gay, so I don't ever go there. But I've never seen it advertised elsewhere.

z0r!

I'm sure that I know of a few others... Oh, btw Hobo you can get Constructor for the PC, and it is much easier to use, but it's pretty hard to find these days.

Alpha Centauri. Highly complex (but completely playable) PC turn-based uhm... I guess it would be called a strategy game (screw your RTSGs! >_<). Basically, you play as the leader of one of seven human factions that are all that's left of humanity (same old story, same old song and daaaance) and you must colonize and fight for survival in an intense and hostile alien world, wachataah! Okay. Now let me explain.

Although the game involves plenty of warfare (at first mainly with the indigenous alien monster worms, then later with the other human factions), it's not really a war game (unless you make it that way). You can choose how you want to allocate your resources, so you could play as a faction of warmongering brutes or you could devote your followers to pure research and gaining knowledge, or anywhere in between/any combination/so on and so forth. Ultimately you'll find that you need to keep yourself fairly oriented towards research and discovery, as this will give you the technology required to A) fulfill the primary goal of the game and B) equip your army with some sweet-ass weapons, G.

And there's plenty of optional automation, if you don't feel like directing a bajillion units every turn.

And apparently there's an expansion available with two new alien factions, and all kinds of new technology and stuff and such. Sweet. I gotta get that, mang.

Oh, and the CG movies are the pimp-shizzle, homeslice, I'm talkin' all up in dat.

Two things I should mention about this game: 1. it's old as hell, and 2. it would probably be a tremendous pain in the arse to find.

Oh, I think I may have had that game at one point... I was trying to find information on it a short while ago, but I couldn't remember what it was called.

Anyway, one game that I quite liked that seemed to have very low publicity was Dark Reign. It's a real-time strategy game, and it had lots of neat behaviour options for the units, I.E. you could set things like damage tolerance, so that when a unit got damaged to a certain amount they would retreat for repairs.
It's also quite "mod-able" compared with some RTS games, it lets you build new units completely from scratch and set up all their properties, then you just use a simple text file to add them to the game. I'm intending to start making a mod for it shortly.

Final Fantsasy: Crystal Chronicles. It had its time but damn was it fun!

Dino 07-18-2005 07:57 AM

I knew I could think of a couple others;

Vectorman.
Urban Strike/Jungle Strike.

big bro boogie 07-18-2005 08:28 AM

Vectorman rocks ass. Really, I was addicted to it... What? It had nice secrets.
I can think of a lot. But I'll give 3 names
Risky Woods
Comix Zone
Bio Hazard Battle

Leto 07-18-2005 03:38 PM

Dungeon Keeper.
**** yeah. But is it just me, or does Dungeon Keeper 2 not work on NT or 2000? O.o Dungeon Keeper one does.

GOod games with litle media coverage:
Vib Ribbon
The Neverhood
Skullmonkeys
Strangers Wrath :p

Godlesswanderer 07-18-2005 05:27 PM

:

Vib Ribbon

I had that as a demo once on PS1. I used to play it for hours, over and over again.

Shame I never had the actual game...

MojoMan220 07-18-2005 05:33 PM

Giants: Citizen Kabuto was a classic in my opinion. I cannot quite remember the hype surrounding it, but I'm pretty sure it was fairly low profile. It was simply gorgeous for the time, and still holds up pretty well today. The humor was laugh-out-loud funny, and the characters were very memorable. It still remains as one of my favorite games of all-time.

CheeseOfGlory 07-18-2005 05:38 PM

Everyone knows that Fallout 2 was the greatest game ever made.

Anyone ever play a game called Battle Bugs? (more than a decade old, but still awesome)

Facsimile 07-19-2005 02:43 AM

:

Urban Strike/Jungle Strike.

Oh are they the helicopter games? If so they rule. I love picking up the little people.
They were so little!

Oh that game was hilarious! I played it at my friends.
Actually I was going to trade Dungeon Keeper 2 for that for a little while a couple of years ago, I should get around to doing that.

Software Bug 07-19-2005 06:44 AM

Jet Set Radio is a very good game:p I liked it..

Ajiellyn 07-19-2005 09:12 AM

EVO: Search for Eden, for the SNES.

I loved this little trinket. It depends what kind of person you are. You start out as a fish, millions of years ago when life began. As you progress through the game, you go through the amphibian era, the dinosaurs, mammals, early man, ice age, etc. The only bad side is the game length.

Either you will absolutely love this game or absolutely hate it. Depends what kind of person you are.

EVO is a side-scroller. Your constant objective is to kill and eat enemies to gain EVO points, and when you get enough points, you can choose to evolve a specific part of your body. Say you're a fish, and you have enough points to buy a cool sharkish tailfin. Now your avatar will move faster! It's just really fun to make your own monster depending on your personality (are you one for attack or defense more?).

Me and $andyMudukon heart that game. I remember wasting many days playing it and playing it again...

:

Shame I never had the actual game...
It was a budget title even when it came out. Like, $40 NZ. (Around $25 American, approx.)

Statikk HDM 08-02-2005 10:06 AM

By the same company that brought you Giants, how about Armed and Dangerous. 15 bucks brand new, and its hilarious. Buy it now.

Jacob 08-02-2005 11:09 AM

'Beyond Good and Evil'
'Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy'
'Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath'

I can guarantee the game 'Farenheit' will recieve zero press coverage too, which is a shame, 'cos it looks like the only good game to be coming out in the next few months.

Is that the one where the character contstantly wakes up somewhere and there's a dead body on the floor. He doesn't know how he got there and there's someone trying to get into the room.
That's what I've gathered from the screenshots anyway (provided I'm thinking of the right game).

Kimon 08-02-2005 02:21 PM

Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath :p [/sillygoosed-ness]

Anyway, a really cool, low publicity game was Serious Sam. The plot was basically, "Ok, you've landed in South America. Go blow shit up with this cannon." How can you NOT love it?

Jacob 08-02-2005 02:29 PM

'Farenheit' is the game that's apparently like an interactive movie. It looks and sounds really good, and something thats been made for such a niche market of action/adventure lovers, so it'll obviously be ignored when it comes to marketing.

<3. Serious Sam is a modern day remake of the good ol' DooM games.

I don't know if it has been publicised a lot, but Painkiller looks quite good... For a complete DooM ripoff.

Boombots: Another good game from the peepz at The Neverhood. Too bad nothing of theirs gets publicised... :/

I was dissapointed by that game, it had some really great ideas, but overall the game felt rushed. What made "Giants" such a wonderful experiences was the freedom of movement (Jet pack, Oh yeah!), but here, you were restricted to set paths. A good game, that I encourage people to check out, but don't go in expecting another ''Citizen Kabuto".

'Farenheit' is the game that's apparently like an interactive movie.

It's called 'Indigo Prophecy' now. Pretty sure.

And it does look rather intriguing. I may have to look into it closer to its release.

Jacob 08-02-2005 07:54 PM

'It's called 'Indigo Prophecy' now. Pretty sure.'

Yeh, the American and Europe titles are different, methinks. I think we're getting 'Farenheit' and you lot are getting 'Indigo Prophecy'. I just hope it lives up the the hype. Has anybody got the game 'Still life', per chance? And if so, is it any good? I doubt many of you have, since i haven't seen it in a lot of stores, but it's worth asking.

Godlesswanderer 08-02-2005 08:00 PM

If you go to http://www.gamespot.com/pc/adventure...ml?q=farenheit you can see the official trailer for it. I must say, apart from the murders and the angels, it's looking very much like The Matrix.

There's also a demo of it which I'm trying to download as we speak. But it's 300 mb so it'll be a while.

There's a demo of it at http://www.gamespot.com/pc/adventure...ife/index.html

I would download it but it's about 250 megs so it would take too long (even longer with the 300 meg Farenheit demo.) But it's got a rating of 6.7 so it's supposed to be moderately good.

My fav's have to be:

Bard's Tale (Xbox)
Predator:Concrete Jungle(Xbox)
Jedi Knight:Jedi Academy(Xbox)

I'm sure there are others, but those are my favorites. Predator was given a bad review in OXM, but it was very good. Most people agree with me. Bard's Tale is a humorous take on RPG games with a mix of Baldur's Gate:Dark Alliance mixed in. Jedi Knight is just a cool series.
