A Sad ending

This has probably already been discussed, and I've probably missed a lot of Articles, but (despite OWI problems currently)...

What do you guys think about the Oddworld Quintology ending on a sad note?
What if all the characters topple the Cartel etc. but they all sacrifice their lives in the process? Or (for the bad ending) just all die?

Sorry if this has already been done. If so, close it...

Oddish 06-03-2005 11:03 AM

Well if the're going to make the Quintology into games then yeah, they would all probably experice some kind of death on the bad ending. But I don't think it'll have endings in the movies (well mabey on DVD). And in the bad ending in MO gabbits become exstinct.

Nate 06-04-2005 04:41 AM

No, I think he means that the Quintology may have a tragic happy ending.

It could happen, but I doubt it. It would fit in with the dark nature of the quintology but my vibe is that Lorne wouldn't go there.

big bro boogie 06-04-2005 10:10 AM

Well'p that in fact is a way to make a storyline odd, isn't it?

drakan90 06-04-2005 12:48 PM

"they would all probably experice some kind of death on the bad ending"

Well duh :-P

Scrab Watcher 06-04-2005 12:59 PM

Ah, a bittersweet end. Could be fun. But, I don't know if Lorne's going to kill the characters he's spent the last ten years trying to get into the open. But who knows?

drakan90 06-04-2005 01:02 PM

Well, he wouldnt have to kill them all...

Scrab Watcher 06-04-2005 01:11 PM

Ah, but that'd be picking favourites wouldn't it? I can imagine the debate around here if he did that ;)

drakan90 06-04-2005 01:37 PM

Ah well. Its not our choice.
Oh the outrage would be glorious...
I think most people like Abe anyway
(therefore making him the most potent to die)

Leto 06-04-2005 03:12 PM

Well, not all of the Quintology characters have been established.

[lawyer=Super Munch]

Sometime in the near future, OWC would have to establish new characters to continue the Oddworld saga. In theory, a newly produced character could create more popularity than Abe himself. So don't put all your money on Abe... You owe $200 for this session anyway.

Sad endings are so much more powerful then happy ones. It's so cliche and annoying how most movies/games have good triumphing over evil and everyone lives happily ever after. Audiences these days are a little more intelligent then a lot of directors/developers make them out to be. They can handle things that are edgy and new to them. There will always be bad things in life, why give people the illusion that good always wins out in the end. Sure, good things happen, but they are often bittersweet. In the real world, things are not so one dimensional, sometimes the good and the evil are hard to make out. I'd like an ending with the industrialists winning out, that seems to be the way things have gone in our world.

Wil 06-05-2005 02:49 AM

I find that sad endings are clichéed. Too many works of fiction have an overall good ending with the death of a character pretty much superimposed on top of the actual story just to tug at everyone's heart strings. The Matrix Revolutions suffered massively from this. I just couldn't stop laughing out loud in the cinema when that particular main character died completely out of the blue.

Why does the death have to be at the ending? There could be tragedy leading to final victory, sacrifices made during parts of the protagonists' final operations, but not at the final step, not unless it's extremely well done.

MojoMan220 06-05-2005 06:01 AM

I don't think a character has to die to make a sad ending, it is, in my opinion an easy shortcut.

big bro boogie 06-05-2005 09:57 AM

What about LOTR style, making abe 'hang off a cliff' but right before he tries to sacrifice himself, he gets saved(?)

Leto 06-05-2005 04:42 PM

That's cheesey. How many times have heros/heorins been saved from a danglinbg cliff?

I do not think sad endings are cliched (Sorry, I really can't be ****ed figuring out the alt combination for that accented 'e'). But sad endings resulting in the death of a main character are rather overused. If there was to be a depressing end, I would hope it to be an intelligent kind of depression. As in, making the viewer feel sad without killing something.

Otherwise, I'm all for the killing. :D

Kimon 06-05-2005 05:15 PM

I think a "Sad in the small sense, happy in the big sense" is a good way to go. Kind of a "We lost a lot of soldiers, but for the better good" kind of thing. So maybe Abe (or some other Quint charcter(s)) could die, and the Mudoken (or whatever other species' to come) cities are wiped out and the race disbanded, but in the end they'd start rebuilding the city and pulling back the race to unite it. Seems like a cool thing to me.

Leto 06-05-2005 05:34 PM

I think that's the only way an Oddworld story could turn out 'sad' without being a 'bad ending'. As in, you didn't save enough beings. Anyone getting me here?

Nate 06-06-2005 04:34 AM

Loud and clear.

Let's not forget that the end of the quintology will not represent the triumph of the natives over the industrials, rather a new balance between the species of Oddworld.

Thus in a way, not a totally happy ending.

Xavier 06-06-2005 10:28 AM

well peace on oddworld is the happiest ending possible...
that's what I think

drakan90 06-06-2005 11:51 AM

...dude.
...thats so lame...

Nate 06-07-2005 01:39 AM

Happy perhaps, but my point was that it is not in line with your typical Hollywood ending.

OANST 06-08-2005 08:57 AM

I think the quintology has already come to a sad ending.

drakan90 06-08-2005 12:32 PM

Yeah...
I know Oddworld is supposed to be going in a 'new direction', but is it actually going to do anything else? Or do you guys reckon its just dead?

Oddish 06-08-2005 12:39 PM

A sad ending is dissapointment, it means the Quinteros haven't done something right or good for oddworld. If they have, then we would be happy and thus making it a happy ending. That's what I'm hoping

OANST 06-08-2005 01:41 PM

What I mean is that since there won't be any more games it is a sad ending.

drakan90 06-09-2005 01:04 AM

Yeah, we know.

"A sad ending is dissapointment, it means the Quinteros haven't done something right or good for oddworld. If they have, then we would be happy and thus making it a happy ending. That's what I'm hoping"

Not necesarrily.
It depends how you look at it.
If you think the characters making a difference, and everyone going hooray peace on oddworld! Love and...other such shit! would the the 'optimal' kind of happy ending.
BUT, seeing as they're trying to save Oddworld, it could end up with all the characters being massacred/giving their lives, but the planet becoming balanced and natural again, thus could be considered a good ending. (That examples a bit extreme, but do you understand what I mean?)

mudling 06-09-2005 03:15 AM

i personly don't like killing, and my stomach turned when the brew master got blown up. i agree, death isn't the only option to make a sad ending. loss in freindship, hope, health and many things can substitue for death of a main character. i would also hate it if abe just stays alive, it would be better in that case if he did die (like when the enimy captures the goodie, but they don't kill them, they put them in a place with they escape from, and sometimes kill the baddies. i hate it when that happens).
an example of a sad, happy ending is that abe forms a truce with an industralist, he excapes a factory and travels to a place to find him, and finds out other glockons have gotten ride of him. (yes i know it contained death, but it wasn't realy a goody)

Well yeah, it dose depends how you look at it. Die or not it'llt still be the right happy ending as long as there's balanced on oddworld, becuase that is most inportant. It will change the way oddworld is, which means we won't see the same heros fighting for the same things again.
If you look at AE's ending, it's dosn't seem that happy becuase there are still problems to be contuined, it won't be the same at the end of whole story.

I just don't think it's very fair that the lovable bottom of the food chain unlikey heros die in the bad at the ending, well they might, if thinking someone like Jesus. Jesus got torchord, which isn't fair becuase he's bring good things to keep balance or whatever he did. Prehaps the Heros will rise on top of the food chain like becoming a god after they die, so they risen on top of chain. Like Xavier said before, Abe being crucifixed at the end of the Quintology. If they die in that way, then Lorne Lanning done a good job making it sad, but aslo making us realise about our world of globalization.

drakan90 06-09-2005 11:44 AM

Its spelt tortured, and Crucified. ;-)
I dunno about them turning into god like entities (Dunno if thats spelt right!)...Abes Shrykull thing was weird enough, too bad he sucks at using it.
"Hey dude, go on a rampage and DESTROY everything!"
"Nah man, I'm gonna stand still and zap things one by one."
"But in the FMV-"
"I SAID stand still and zap things one by one."

Oddish 06-09-2005 12:00 PM

Thanks you.

I think Shrykull is too powerful to control for Abe. Mabey shrykull isn't confortable stanidng in the cycle of life, but it dosn't matter because he used as weapon that cannot be destroyed. Oh and Abe has to resuce the right amount of mudokons. (but you all knew that, just reminding)

Since Munch is supposed be able to transform into the his alter ego Riod, It makes think that all heros will have a transofmation, even thought Munch didn't have one, there can always be changes in the Movies, or Re-games.

drakan90 06-09-2005 12:05 PM

I dunno. Roid was a cool idea, I admit, but its too similar to Shrykull in terms of game devices.
Y'know, screen smasher boom bang things.
Although obviously they would work differently.
If they do create any of the new characters, I think they should move away from possessing creatures/machines, and transformations.
They need something new. ...Like poledancing. Yeah. Poledancing.

It'd be great if they re-made AO and AE into 3-D, but made it well, and MO just good unlike the original. I'd love to go on a Shyrkull bolt-blasting killing spree. Yeah.

Oddish 06-09-2005 12:11 PM

But I think the possession and transformation make them great game characters, and there are a team, thats how fell in love with Abe. Roid is more complex than just saving muds, it's different, it's to do with emotion with Munch in-game.

A re-MO would be nice though.

Nate 06-09-2005 06:29 PM

Since when is Super-Munch called Roid?

Did I miss a meeting?

mudling 06-09-2005 10:27 PM

it's it in the art book.

OANST 06-10-2005 07:48 AM

Yes. It is.

drakan90 06-10-2005 09:05 AM

"But I think the possession and transformation make them great game characters,"
I never said they should take them off Abe and Munch, thats their thing that they do! Y'know? The thing? :-P

I mean they shouldnt have any NEW characters with those abilities, because Abe and Munch have pretty similar powers already.

big bro boogie 06-10-2005 09:16 AM

true... but what else is there to posses, the weather and water level? already possesed by muds, creatures? abe, robots? munch
So how about trees and facilities? aww man, c'mon.

There almost isn't anything left to posses.

drakan90 06-10-2005 10:13 AM

Hence no more characters with possession abilities. ':-I
Who's post are you replying to?

No, what they should do is resize the resoloution to 2048x1556 and make it sterioscopic. Everything should be sterioscopic. Period.

No, no, my user name is still Super Munch. :p Sorry, couldn't resist. The only way we know Super-Munch as Roid is from the art book.

Dark Elite_H2 06-12-2005 01:29 PM

Suspension of the next Oddworld is killin' us all, eh?
