VE Day

What a pile of shite. Pompous old people (don't you just hate 'em) talking about the great victory that saved 'good old blighty'. They spit upon our generation and say stuff like "you'd all be speaking German now if it wasn't for us".

Churchhill annoys me, he wasn't as evil as Hitler but he was still a stuck up posh bloke. He sent the army to shoot and kill protesting people.

Even if Hitler had invaded Britain, he would never been able to inforce the Empire. People would revolt and end the regime. Thus, these old people are just showing for something thay would have happened either way.

Jacob 05-08-2005 12:45 PM

I still think they deserve respect for what they did, even if their opinions of the war where tainted by British propaganda.

Rich 05-08-2005 12:49 PM

Oh yes definitely, they were very noble and brave. But what they saved is a lie, it doesn't exist.

Esus 05-08-2005 12:49 PM

I think we should be thankful for winning the (arguably) hardest and most threatening war in history, allegedly for us (:p), but they should also get over it.

Jacob 05-08-2005 01:45 PM

I think it's nice that we can all have a little get together and celebrate how we kicked some Nazi ass, even though some of Hitler's ideas where quite good.

Nepharski 05-08-2005 03:45 PM

Before I go on, I'd just like to say that Churchill is awesome. Pompus and egomaniacal? Yes...but still awesome.

Hitler made a few mistakes late in the game that probably cost him the war. If he had just kept bombing the Brits, but instead of the cities, bombing the freakin' bases, he could have knocked them out of the war...or even conquored them. Britian was the American, "landing pad," for when we moved into place for D-Day and such.

And then of course, Hitler did THE dumbest move of his military career...invaded Russia (Which he had earlier presueded to be "neutral" from the war). Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I suppose the point I'm trying to make is...it might not have happened anyway, as you suggest. Why didn't they revolt elsewhere, I should wonder.

Bah, whatever. I just don't think something like war is easy to just, "get over." That's all.

exactly what I was gonna say :)

Fantastic, yet another controversial thread that will no doubt piss people off, cause flaming, and end up in a 5 page argument. This is just what we need, because we really don't have enough of these threads right now. Way to go Rich.

Jacob 05-09-2005 02:22 AM

I'd hardly say this is going to turn into a flame war. How can it, exactly?

His interest laid not with the Brits or Americans, but with the East and turning it into wonderous living space. He was said to respect the West on many things, and so he just followed his policy.

It's a shame. Most of the 'Western' nations were making some nice advances in various areas, then Hitler came and did the same things, but on a larger scale, and suddenly doing it is wrong and evil. He's put us back decades.

Jacob 05-09-2005 07:50 AM

In what areas, out of interest?

Off-topic fucking sucks. We need controversial topics, unless you want to play finish the sentence or talk about next-gen consoles.

Because France and co. are all wussies. :p
Trust me, if they had invaded Britain, people would not just sit there, they would fight in the streets as Churchhill said.

every and any thread can turn into a flame war... it just requires a little love.... (I would do it myself, but I'd risk being banned :()

Off topic does fucking suck at the moment, and I agree that you hit the nail on the head there about the options available. Finish the sentence type threads and discussions about fucking game consoles are lame, lame, lame.

But on the other hand, we've already got several of these threads, and they always descend into the same conversations.

The pedophile war on iraq current government discussion is being carried out in at least 3 threads. This is just another thread involving war, and controversy. I'm sorry Rich but I don't find these sorts of discussions to be interesting. Once you've discussed it and gone over all the issues, there isn't much more to talk about... once you've done it like 3 times over and argued your point until your fingers are worn down to the bone, it gets a bit old.

We need some threads that don't fucking blow. Something that's interesting and meaningful enough to have a debate about, dramatic and controversial enough to be entertaining, and original enough to not be lame.

And NO, posting an MSNBC link to a story about a man who swallowed his dog does not come under the catagory of meaningful enough to have a debate about.

Confound it! I forgot about that.

*Types in, "French Military Victories," on Google.*

Still, if everyone had risen up...who knows?

Hey, YOU GUYS FELL ASLEEP. Nobody is going to remark, not even in passing, about Bush's speeches at Russia and Latvia? Russia is doing some really evil things right now, and Latvia was a HUGE Nazi country. They're the only nation to have official Hitler and S.S. parades, and honor members who fought in the S.S. And he chooses to visit these evil places on V.E. Day, all the while trying to make the "War" in Iraq look as noble and needed as WWII?

Jacob 05-10-2005 10:23 AM

'They're the only nation to have official Hitler and S.S. parades, and honor members who fought in the S.S.'

You have to honour somebody, and Hitler, though a little bit cooky, was a genius. He got Germany out of the shithole it was in after America reclaimed all it's cash. And the SS were just the awesomest non-fiction badguys Fate and Destiny could've dreamed up.

Statikk HDM 05-10-2005 11:49 AM

First off, I did not type the pedophile war in Iraq. Secondly, I'm astounded that I'm the only guy who sees this as disrespectful. Russia is a humongous violator of human rights and democracy, and Latvia is stilled packed with goose steppers. Going to Russia and Latvia to talk about democracy and liberty is like going to a crack house to tell people how bad drugs are.

Rich 05-10-2005 12:03 PM

:

Thats what social workers do. Someone has to tell them that drugs are bad, and someone must tell Russia that democracy is good.

You think of some then, everything has been done to death recently. How about Euthanasia?

Statikk HDM 05-10-2005 12:17 PM

Rich, what I'm trying to say is, don't reward these backwards and twisted countries. Until they get it together you put a visit sanction on them. Latvia's leaders and Russia's leaders are pricks, why should they get the honor of visits from quite possibly the most powerful empire ever? If you are going to commemorate people who fought for freedom, move it out of Latvia. Go into Russia and praise their patriots but snub the leaders. Send a message, don't just take it.

Hitler manipulated the political system to get himself on top, and when he got there, he turned a battered Germany into a world superpower. The problem was, the power was not used properly, the strategy was too flawed, the power wasn't concentrated enough around germany itself. Instead of radiating power from germany out into the world around it, the forces that were in germany, left to go fight elsewhere, leaving Hitler's forces extremely stretched out.

Hitler both was and wasn't a genius. He was responsible for the rise and fall of Nazi Germany, the rise being political, the fall being military. Some of the greatest commanders and generals in the German army had their control relinquished from them, and Hitler, an inferior military strategist, took their place.

This turned out to be a fateful move, and allowed the British, Canadian, and American forces to take Germany in 1945 on D+90.

Jacob 05-10-2005 01:51 PM

Erm, yes. Indeed.

But that Mengele, eh? What a crazy Cat!

Rich 05-10-2005 02:07 PM

Heh, Mengele, what a legend...

If the UK and USA had joined the axis, we could have made the best Empire in the history of the world.

Jacob 05-11-2005 11:31 AM

Awww...poo. Why did we go to war again, by the by? Wasn't Hitler loving us before we tried to shaft him with bullets?

Esus 05-11-2005 11:50 AM

Meh, we already have claim to best Empire in the history of the world.

Godlesswanderer 05-11-2005 12:00 PM

:

Awww...poo. Why did we go to war again, by the by? Wasn't Hitler loving us before we tried to shaft him with bullets?

He was, I believe. But he was preparing to invade the Rhineland (ie. France's buffer against the Germans) and reunite Austria and Germany, which the UK and US weren't prepared to let him do.

Jacob 05-11-2005 12:50 PM

Why exactly?

Godlesswanderer 05-11-2005 12:57 PM

Why wouldn't they let him do it or why did Hitler want to invade?

Nate 05-11-2005 10:49 PM

Churchhill annoys me, he wasn't as evil as Hitler but he was still a stuck up posh bloke. He sent the army to shoot and kill protesting people.

Not to mention he gladly accepted Australian troops early on but refused to send any back when we were being attacted by the Japanese.

And the whole Gallipoli debacle was just ridiculous. In case you don't know, British commanders sent the troops (mainly Australians and New Zealanders but also with Brits and other allied countries) to the wrong place on the map of Turkey so they were essentially trying to conquer an unconquerable and strategically worthless hill. Nonetheless the Brits refused to admit they had made a mistake and kept on sending more troops to their deaths.

Jacob 05-12-2005 04:25 AM

'Why wouldn't they let him do it or why did Hitler want to invade?'

Meh. Answer both, heh.

Godlesswanderer 05-12-2005 10:08 AM

Well, The UK and US wouldn't do anything at first because they thought a stronger Germany would be able to take care of the Communists for them. And Hitler wanted to invade so he could expand Germany's territory for 'living space' for the third reich.
