Did Dragons Exist? Yes or No?

I was quite surprised that even though I see dragons mentioned over and over again on these forums, I havn't seen a thread actually discussing if they existed or not.

Most people say that what people used to think were dragons were old dinosaur skeletons. But why would they appear in so many cultures across the world?

So, what do you think? What's your opinion?

Hobo 03-01-2005 04:21 AM

Not the fantasy dragon you're on about. Only the Big ass lizard things.

Abeguy 03-01-2005 05:57 AM

Yes, there were dragons.
Talks about it in Job (the Bible)
but then again, most of you will still say they didn't

Havoc 03-01-2005 06:09 AM

The fire breathing, huge ass flying dragons that are discussed here, are just a myth. They never existed and were 'created' becouse of other lizards that wanderd around city's but were hardly seen by ppl.
Story's started circling around and as the decades past the story's slowly transformed into the dragons we know today. Real dragons however are no bigger then the space from your shoulder to your elbow, depending on the species.

There is a documentary on dragons on Animal Planet, Sunday March 20 at 8 PM ET.
A sneak preview can be found here: http://animal.discovery.com/converge...s/dragons.html

Coolmanbizkit 03-01-2005 07:07 AM

I think dragons did exist, Theres things about them in every culture... so they must of been real, Maybe they might still be alive.

CarboN 03-01-2005 07:26 AM

I think it would have been really cool if they existed, but no, I don't believe in them. How could they fly with that enormous body?
The fire would have come from the two chemicals that encounter each other in a dragon's mouth or somewhere, but why wouldn't that burn their tongue?

Esus 03-01-2005 07:40 AM

Erm... they don't appear all over the world. Did you think the old Chinese Dragon is the same/has the same skeletal structure as the Medieval European Dragon? :p

Anyway, I believe we have classified living lizard species as dragons.

Abe16 03-01-2005 07:53 AM

Yeah, I belive they exsisted.

Abe's son 03-01-2005 08:06 AM

No... and when they use them in the bible it's an Illiteration. ZP

Alpha 03-01-2005 10:42 AM

I got a book on dragonology written by Dr.Ernest drake. It's about dragons and how they mated and why they hord gold I loved it,it was an interesting read.

TheRaisin 03-01-2005 03:21 PM

Dragonology. Uh hmm.

Okay, since when were dragons thought to be real? Who in god's name believes in them? (don't answer that) I've never in my life heard that dragons are presumed by anyone to be real. This thread is about as surprising to me as a thread about how dinosaurs are common pets among children in America.

Where's the proof?

BTW, I love dragons. They're about the coolest mythical creatures ever. But no, I don't think they're real.

P.S. I lost all respect for Animal Planet when they started doing all kinds of sensational shows. Like animatronic/computer animated dinosaurs which they name and pit against each other under the guise of providing actual information. Or when they created a show about animals in the future and, based entirely on their own speculation and fantasies, came up with a world of tree-dwelling intelligent squids and elephant-sized tortoises.

did you ever see "Reign of Fire"?

Probobly not. Didn't do so well at the box office.

It was about a young boy who's father died (I think) and mother is a miner. One day the miners discover a giant egg, it hatches, and a dragon comes out, and kills all the miners.

More eggs are found and soon all of humanity is nearly wiped out by oncoming waves of Dragons, and the boy grows up, and is determined to avenge his mother's death and destroy the dragons.

Anyway, to the point, the system of fire breathing that they had, was there were two glands OUTSIDE the mouth, the would squirt some kind of flammable liquid, and the dragon's breath would light it aflame.

The humans used this to defeat the dragons at the end. (Shoot them in the head, liquid burns, head explodes)

and no, I don't think they ever existed besides in myth and fairy tales.

Leto 03-01-2005 09:30 PM

Dragons= What? I think, some maniac threw a lizard from a cliff, and passers by saw this 'flying' lizard. He may have attached crappy, paper wings, too.

Ok, bad theory. But Dragons most definatley do not exist. Although in many cultures (Mayan, Maori, China just to name a few), Dragons may have been just a spread rumor. "Hey, I want that for my religion, too!".

Yea, there is not realy a point in trying to make a show about future animals. But it is interesting to see a show with speculations on how dinosaurs lived. Im not into lizards that much, but I get cought form time to time.

The Marching Mudokon 03-02-2005 02:14 AM

As much as I love dragons, I don't think they existed. I have the Dragonolgy book as well, it's very interesting. BTW Carbon, bees aren't ment to be able to fly either (something to do with their body shape) but they are still able to.

Biggy Bro Slig 03-02-2005 05:29 AM

Well,
if Dragons were real they would of evolved from Lizards.
But we would have evidence like if a species of Lizard could breath fire.

well, dinosaurs. which lizards and some birds share as a common ancestor.

it would not be so hard to believe of a lizard breathing fire. there are already defensive/offensive evolutions that are pretty formidable.

what is hard to believe is giant lizards flying around that are voiced by sean connery.

Nate 03-02-2005 05:26 PM

I went to the "Dinosaurs from China" exhibition at the Melbourne Museum a few weeks back and they implied that the Chinese dragon myths were based on the huge numbers of dinosaur fossils found there. I think that we can chalk the rest up to cultural sharing because, when you think about it, dragons are bloody cool.

Evolved getting smaller and punyer isn't evolving.

Esus 03-03-2005 10:35 AM

:

Yeah, that's false.

TheRaisin 03-03-2005 02:33 PM

Birds are smaller and punier than dinosaurs, but they evolved from them. Sheesh. Evolution doesn't mean "getting big and strong and stuff". God.

I'll bet thousands of years before some guy in the, what was it, 1800s found some dinosaur fossils, some people in China or someplace found some fossils and came up with the idea of dragons. And of course, fossils are found worldwide, so it's not that farfetched that at some point someone thousands of miles away could find some and make the same assumption.

But if I learned that, at some point in the Earth's history, some short-lived species evolved the ability to breathe fire, I suppose I wouldn't be that shocked (I would have to see some evidence, of course). Nature can create some pretty strange things. And of course flying reptiles are nothing new.

But dragons are always portrayed as these big boney lizard things with just these ludicrously small wings to keep them aloft. That's absolutely impossible. Pteradons (I think that's the term for that whole group of flying reptiles, correct me if I'm wrong) were amazingly light creatures with gigantic wings for their bodies, and I don't think any reptile is going to find another way for it to work.

Alpha 03-03-2005 02:35 PM

Isn't the bird thing a thoery?.

TheRaisin 03-03-2005 02:40 PM

Yes. A very good one.

Alpha 03-03-2005 02:41 PM

So you would agree likewise that dragon's Could exist?.

TheRaisin 03-03-2005 02:42 PM

What the hell? What about my post would lead you to suggest that?

Alpha 03-03-2005 02:46 PM

Well you said that it was a very good Thoery*.
Wouldn't the thoery* that dragon's existing not be true?, I mean if we can beleive in dinasaurs* then why not dragons?. Just because they breathe fire hoard gold and presumably speak doesn't mean it's fake. Dragon's are supposed to be seen as animals it has the ability to breathe fire while a spider can spin a web from itself so they are kinda same and same.

TheRaisin 03-03-2005 02:51 PM

Okay, first of all, the existence of dinosaurs is not a theory. Lots of things having to do with them, like how they died, how they lived, whether or not they were warm-blooded, whether they evolved into birds, are theories. But we know that they did exist.

Secondly, there's no proof of dragons. None. Saying that dragons might exist because dinosaurs did is like saying, "Well, the ancient Egyptians existed, so aliens must exist too."

Abe's son 03-03-2005 02:52 PM

....what the **** are you smoking?

Spiders use a gland to produce it. More than one animal does it.

And nothing can breath fire without burning the shit out of itself.

Also... were's the fossils proving they're real? And don't ****ing say dinosaurs... because there would be torched remains on them, not flesh, but carbon from the burnt... stuff. Okay in end, the **** they arn't real...

So... eat it.

Alpha 03-03-2005 02:55 PM

The dragonoloy book I got gives planty of proof of real dragons buy it and you'll see.

TheRaisin 03-03-2005 02:57 PM

Uh huh.

How about you tell us about some of this proof? I don't much feel like going out and buying a book trying to persuade me that dragons are real.

Leto 03-05-2005 08:53 PM

The book of Dragonology? Isn't it written by Earnest DRAKE? Drake? You've got to be shitting me. No one has that last name. It could be a work of fiction, people... As in, a book for fun. Like "Trolls Really Exist" and "Bunyips: Revealed". 'Dragonology' just sounds phony...

lol. you got a pretty good point there.

Alpha 03-06-2005 06:47 AM

At the beggining of the book it say's the book was found and was only being published as a matter of interest there was no proof that a Dr. Ernest Drake existed.

Havoc 03-06-2005 07:24 AM

Ernest Drake... yea he existed alright. IN A JAMES BOND MOVIE!

Also: how Ironic. Drake, sounds like Draak which means Dragon in Dutch O.o. Its a conspiricy!!!!

*Wants to make a comment on Alpa himself, but saves it for a better moment*

There are book on every subject "proofing" something did or did not happan. If we have to believe the bible, God was trying to make a nice planet but drowned everything on it when he didn't like the way it turned out. And now he just gave up on us and got back to solving a puzzle somewhere on the other side of the universe which is more important then us (I wouldn't blame him :P)

There is also a book (in fact written by me though never published ofcourse :P) that has tons and tons of proof based on facts that the 9/11 attacks were not done by Osama but by the FBI. That doesn't make it true does it?

There are a lot of morons on this planet *reconciders putting up that comment now... nah* who think everything can be proofen or is a conspiricy.
When is man kind going to accept this: The universe works in ways the human mind could not even begin to understand. Life is just as complex and any attempt to understand it will never reach the roots of life. And even if it does it will be so complex the persone discovering it will be so overwelmed he will commit spontanious suicide :P.

Point of this 'kind of' off topic rant: Life is to complex for us, so why dedicate your own life to uncovering its roots instead of enjoying it?

Alpha 03-06-2005 09:19 AM

Because:

A. Why the hell would you commit suicide (You know everything)

B.Info is power

C. I love anything out of the ordinary(my fav product being a wegee board).

Havoc 03-06-2005 09:29 AM

You saying life is out of the ordinary? Or Dragons? If dragons did exist, they are not out of the ordinary now are they?

There are things in this life I would rather not know, thank you verry much. Yes, I would definatly trow myself infront of the lions if I knew everything there is to know.

Alpha 03-06-2005 10:01 AM

What a way to commit suicide by killing yourself with your fav beast.
And back in medievil times dragons were considered "Animals" not magical they like all vertabrates have back bones and the bones required to fly, a little hlit in thier mouth allows them to breathe fire and so on so forth.

If I ever decide to kill myself, for whatever stupid reason, I will go to Siberia and look for a tiger to kill me  *Looks around to all the :fuzconf: faces*

Ughm... right.

Alpha 03-06-2005 10:11 AM

Ha Ha!, I've never watched any of them!.
