And he certainly tickled MY fancy!

Stangers noo title is 'Oddworld: Strangers Wrath'.

Curiouser and curiouser...

Source, IGN...

Wil 11-12-2004 10:28 AM

Well found, Jacob. Xav updated OddBlog a significant time ago, but it's curious nonetheless. Check out the new stylised title:

Scrab Watcher 11-12-2004 10:33 AM

I would have prefered just 'Stranger' and that cool dragon thingy logo...ah well.

Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath

From IGN.com:

November 11, 2004 - Electronic Arts announced today that the next game in the Oddworld series, until now known as Oddworld Stranger, is now officially titled Oddworld Stranger's Wrath.

In addition, EA has revealed the official ship date for the Xbox-exclusive title: January 25, 2005.

Not up to Stranger snuff yet? The only proper remedy is to explore our extensive coverage so far. But if you want the quick-'n'-dirty, here it is. Continuing the darkly humorous, humorously surreal tone of the previous three Oddworld games, Stranger's Wrath puts players in the role of the Stranger, a brash bounty hunter. You make your living by making killings, but soon you'll face up to what it means to be on the outside. Stranger's Wrath plays out in first- and third-person using a brand-new game engine. You can bet the whole thing will fairly drip with skewed Oddworld charm.

Keep your attention here for more Oddworld updates as they come in.

Alcar 11-12-2004 01:12 PM

Abe Babe and I were dicussing this last night while getting the forums back up. We both prefer the previous title, and after seeing the new styled logo. I must agree infinitely more.

While it seems they've changed it to set themselves up for a sequel, it seems the new title is more of an afterthought. Not to mention it is so corny. What's next, "Return of Stranger"?

Alcar...

Esus 11-12-2004 01:21 PM

This is... a bit of a disappointment. Wrath? Why couldn't they keep Oddworld Stranger? It's not like it's impossible for them to have Oddworld Stranger's Something for a sequel. :(

Alcar 11-12-2004 01:28 PM

Exactly. Not the mention the new logo looks really dull. A minute or two in PhotoShop could have you produce a similar logo. The old one incorporated a nice 'dragon' style at least. It was very cool indeed.

Alcar...

Oddish 11-12-2004 01:32 PM

I say the new title is arlight, well it's better than Oddworld just got Stranger.

Wil 11-12-2004 02:00 PM

I'm already getting all excited about Oddworld Stranger's Sequel! `Wrath’ really does sound corny, though. The Wrath of Cortex may have been a good title parody, but the word probably lost all its strength years ago.

Cloverfield 11-12-2004 11:17 PM

I preferred just Oddworld Stranger also [as Alcar said]. Although I respect OWI's decision with the title, there is possibly a good reason behind it [perhaps better for marketing and to entice those who are unfamilliar with the Oddworld universe].

Abe Babe...

Shell Man 11-12-2004 11:50 PM

I don't know what they are thinking, but I guess they have their reasons. The 'wrath' and lack of the cool dragon design are pretty dissapointing in all honesty.

Xavier 11-13-2004 01:36 AM

I was disapointed too... Well I guess OWI has good reasons to do that, at least I hope so :(

LimpJedi 11-13-2004 02:06 AM

I really wish they could have made this game follow abe again.. I have been a oddworld fan since day 1 and having this whole new guy and not even mentioning abe, kinda disapoints me. But being the oddworld fan that I am im still gonna buy this game. Just hope its not too much of a fps it would kill the whole Oddworld game style.

Fuzzle Guy 11-13-2004 03:09 AM

But he's not angry about anything other than the fact that he's gonna die with a desease, So why is it called Strangers Wrath?

Wil 11-13-2004 10:47 AM

Stranger is such an introverted character, he's probably got a whole collection of feelings we don't know about yet. I'm positive Stranger has plenty to get angry about, but I don't want them to be brought up here for fear of them wandering into Spoiler territory.

Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath Petition

Okay, as soon as I heard the new title of the game we've all been waiting for, I was instantly peeved. "Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath", how incredibly generic... I find myself wishing they would have left the name alone, and know that the people at OWI could do much better. So, I have decided to start a "petition" thread in hopes that OWI will either change the name back, or come up with something more original. Hopefully OWI will listen to their fanbase and do something about this.

Who's with me?!

GrigtheSlig :fuzblink:

Wil 11-14-2004 03:06 AM

Hmmm, I have mixed feelings about the idea. Clearly ‘Oddworld Stranger’ is better from an artistic/originality point of view, but ‘Stranger's Wrath’ might turn out to be much better for marketing. It could under the influence of pressure from EA that OWI changed the title, or just under advice. I personally would prefer to play Stranger, but I don't want that to deprive Oddworld of publicity and new fans. Not being released on PS2 will undoubtedly be a set back, especially after all the claims that it would appear on the Sony box.

I will change the title of this thread to distinguish it from the other one, though.

Fuzzle Guy 11-14-2004 07:23 AM

However much 'Strangers Wrath' ,might be good for marketing, it will not attract the true Oddworld fans, Oddworld fans by heart and sole, it will just attract the people who will see it in 'Game' and say,
"Wow, it's a title with the name 'Wrath' in it, it must be good! Oh my god, it's a first person shooter aswell! Lets buy it!"

So they get hoem and go 'What in heavens name name is Oddworld?"

Sorry, but I think that OW Stranger is a much better title

Fuzzle Guy 11-14-2004 09:38 AM

Well, I don't like that new logo either, it's too grisly, I liek the dragon one.

Wil 11-14-2004 10:44 AM

You don't need to apologise, it is a better name, I'm just trying to see the reverse argument. There are two very good points I've seen other people make, so they shouldn't be acredited to me, but I'm quite sure no one else has brought them up here.

The first is that the double entendre of Oddworld Stranger is now lost. ‘Stranger’, as it is used, is unquestionably a proper noun, and can't be used to describe the next game [as being stranger].

The second point was made by good friend Rick, who I haven't spoken to in ages, who commented on EA's explanation that the new title will “better reflect the spirit of the game.” So there we have it: ‘wrath’ is the spirit of this next game.

Nepharski 11-14-2004 10:47 AM

Revolution!

I shall sign your petition.

*Signs.*

Wil 11-14-2004 10:48 AM

I don't know about the new ‘logo’: it's not actually a logo, just some stylised text. The word ‘Stranger’ is still in the title, so there's the chance it will be there. I'd say it's a good chance, too, because it was so damned good.

Abeguy 11-14-2004 10:48 AM

'kay, Stranger's Wrath is like one of those Star Wars names, corney, yet appealing to the public like Fuzzle Guy pointed out, but then again, what do i know?

Xavier 11-14-2004 10:53 AM

like many people, I like Oddworld:Stranger better...
but OWI must have their reasons...

Xavier 11-14-2004 10:59 AM

on the ea site they refered to it as "Box-logo", that's all I can add

Oddish 11-14-2004 11:07 AM

http://www.xboxworld.nl/images/objec...o/game_622.gif
I found it on Xboxworls.nl.
Looks likes a logo.

Esus 11-14-2004 11:10 AM

Now, that's better. Not quite as good as our beloved ship-head logo, but still good.

Xavier 11-14-2004 11:14 AM

looks better
thank you oddish!

oddguy 11-14-2004 11:28 AM

I respect Oddworld's descision. I mean, they've been making this game for about three years, and care very much for it. So if they thought this title would make their game look bad, I don't think they'd do it. I mean, they know the game best. More than we do...we haven't even played it!

-oddguy

Scrab Watcher 11-14-2004 11:56 AM

I feel a bit happier now. :) thanks Oddish. Though I still miss that dragon (I LOVE dragons *hugs a dragon*) and Stranger's Wrath still sounds kinda...er...you know...cheesy... Even so, I'm sure they've got their reasons :)

Nate 11-14-2004 01:23 PM

yeah, it does sound a little cheesy. But its just in following from their previous titles.

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee
Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus
Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath

it sets them up for sequels as well

Nepharski 11-14-2004 01:30 PM

:

:

"Oddworld: Stranger II-The Son of Stranger's Return!"

I also feel uncomfortable with the name...but I will not let it lessen my enthusiasm.

Oddsville 11-14-2004 02:00 PM

Everyone need to stop criticizing the little things Oddworld dose and just let them do it. I can understand why you all don't like it (I liked "Oddworld: Stranger" aswell.) but in the end it's their decision. If it'll end up attracting new people then thats great and Im sure all of the long time fans won't just forget about getting the game just because of a little name change. Mabye the name will suite the game much better, just wait untill you play it.

Exactly. It's OWI decision to change the name, and if they feel it's right to do, then we don't have any say in if it should be changed back or not. I'm perfectly fine with the name.

Alcar 11-14-2004 02:41 PM

So we should all sit back, and delude ourselves that the game will be good, no matter what?

Like I've mentioned over and over again, I am generally impressed with the game, albeit I am still disapointed the game has gone semi-FPS. But there are always going to be things that urk me, and the new name is one of them. You shouldn't all act so offended. You're acting as if I had spit on you and danced on your grave.

Alcar...

Shell Man 11-14-2004 03:03 PM

I wouldn't criticize it if it didn't seem totally uncharacteristic of OWI. I can only think it's purely for marketing purposes, but it still detracts something from the overall feel, and loses a very cool design for a dragon in favor of a very boring look and cliched title. One can only hope the game itself hasn't had to sacrifice too much in the name of marketability. Other than that, the chicken people, the western style, the action and FPS element don't bother me.

Dualist 11-14-2004 04:12 PM

You know...

The new title kind of reminds me of, hmm a sequel to Stranger?

dont.....tell...me....it...isnt coming out for ps2.. ;~;

personally...I think it's just silly to fight over something like the name, any true oddworld fan will buy the game no matter what it's named :p and if it atracts more general audience, well..whatever works :p

Well, to me, the name of a Game is very important. OWI says that their new name portrays the feeling of the game... so does that mean Stranger is gonna run around throughout the whole game and be "wrathy?" If that's true, I don't know if i'd like to play as a character that's always pissed off.

I don't know how the new name would atract a larger audence either. Would you, not knowing anything about Stranger, just run to the store and buy a game called "Oddworld: Strangers Wrath?"

Alcar 11-14-2004 08:59 PM

Not too sure if I would go an buy it, or even look closer at it. Typically, when 'wrath' is used in a video game, it's a sure sign that the game is really poor. 'Wrath of Cortex', for instance. Ugh, they did such a dismal job with the Crash Bandicoot franchise. Though I hear they actually spent effort in making Twinsanity, and it is quite good. And, 'twinsanity' is such a cool made-up name, indeed very creative.

Which is my biggest gripe with the new name. It seems like it was an afterthought.
