Two Brand New Stranger Images

Credit goes to Oddworld Universe.

Two Brand New Stranger Images (16th July 2004)
We have discovered two new images taken from the next Oddworld title. Both images go hand in hand with the image released with the last EA Games press article, meaning they both depict real-time in-game gameplay screenshots. The first screenshot is of Stranger and a Clakker in a concrete filing room. The second screenshot in particular, however, is our first look at what the first person view while firing the crossbow looks like.

The images are too large to attach here, so I'll just link to them instead:

This is great! I'm loving that First-Person view.

wow.
amazing.

the 2nd pic:
that fuzzy thing on the right looks really creepy. these eyes. ugh.

.:VaniLLaKiLLah:.

Alcar 07-15-2004 09:22 PM

That's a chippunkz, I think it's cute :p However, the creature to the left is something we haven't seen before. Although, the eyes do resemble the A-wrapnid we've all seen before. So, perhaps it is the 'upgraded' form?

Alcar...

oddguy 07-15-2004 09:45 PM

The Chippunk is so adorable!

Oh...and that's not an A-wrapnid. It's a Thud-Slug. I'd bet my manly-ness on it. ;)

Ack, the eyes fooled me. But I can see what you mean, what with the different shell layers. Though, I'm more intrigued with the Live Ammo we haven't seen any images / concepts of. Like the Sulfur bats, that IGN mention.

Although, it could be one of the Live Ammo present on the Inhabitants' new shirt design: http://www.oddworlduniverse.com/game...ranger-031.jpg

awesome screens!
look at the Hi ress!
look at the detail!

Sekto Springs 07-16-2004 03:22 AM

They've really come along way since the FPS sequences we saw during the Xfactor special. It looks like Stranger has some sort of guage built into his crossbow, probly to indicate the player on the amount of ammo or something. And are those Hatmen riding old-school minecarts? Kewl.

Wil 07-16-2004 04:55 AM

Woo, great find Alcar. The detail on these screenshots is simply fabulous. No part of the wall in the first grab seems the same - you can imagine the wear and tear of it as furniture is shifted about. Even the wires on the walls, it just seems like it's a lived in place. The detail of the characters, too, doesn't bother me - they just look great. Well done OWI!

Looking at the first shot, though, I'm a tad miffed by the props. Standard lamps, standard filing cabinets, standard books - even the paper holding thing on the desk is so standard it could be my own. I just think back to AO, where even the ring pulls had such an original design... But that's one small worry, anyway.

Sekto Springs 07-16-2004 05:04 AM

I see how the guage works, now. You can only fire two types of ammo per time, the guages on either side indicate the ammount of ammo. In this screenshot, it indicates that he has 7 thud-slugs and 9 chippunks left.

I'm worried. It seems that there is alot of unoriginality in Stranger. Salimanders, the Clakkerz, and now the working environments. I'm afraid.

oddguy 07-16-2004 08:12 AM

Affraid? This news has me so excited! I was shaking with anticipation last night while updating Oddworld-Web.

*cough*

Lush Jungles...Snowy Environment.
True...a bit un-original, but I know all of it will have a unique odd touch to it that only OWI can muster.

Al the Glukkon 07-16-2004 08:40 AM

Wow, the detail in these screenshots is amazing. Like Max said the room in the first screen looks like someone actually live there, like some of the filing cabinets and boxes left open. Although I have to be picky the rivets in the second screen look flat. The hatmen are using crossbows!

Oddish 07-16-2004 09:18 AM

Whooaa! 2 new screen shots. Hey it's a clakker, the room looks so detailed! And the second screenshot look's amazing. The cross bow look's well cool, and so real. The ammo look's so cute and brillant graphics. I love how they made the crossbow. The Thud slug looks awsom. And the explosoin hase these shock wavs. Keewl. You might able to steal those objects. Reminds me in GTA in some ways.

If see i think there a photo of 2 eggs, must be the clakkerz. And a train track, look's alot diffrent from AE'S style of trains. But the explosion look's the best yet, it would look's good in motion.

Dipstikk 07-16-2004 09:21 AM

*rings hands excitedly* Eheheheheheheh. Matt's loving this.
I like the distortion from the explosion in the second screen.

drakan90 07-16-2004 09:28 AM

Cool, I'm liking the ...thud slug?
I have to agree with you about the originality though. Especially with the name...i mean, Chippunkz, Thudd Slug, A-Wrapnid??? (I wonder how they came up with those?) < For all the dumb who browse the forums, that was sarcasm.

:

The hatmen are using crossbows!
...they look like pick axes to me. It being a mine with minecarts, although I could be wrong. One does look like it has a scope...

Al the Glukkon 07-16-2004 10:36 AM

I now think I see the source of the explosion, and I just noticed the two other hatmen on the right.

Oddish 07-16-2004 11:01 AM

I do wonder if they'll have moving clouds, well it depens of wind. And also the sun effect.

sligster 07-16-2004 11:08 AM

yup, the baddies use crossbows.

Look how this ones holding his weapon.
looks like a crossbow to me.....

Oddsville 07-16-2004 12:11 PM

Wow this is great! These new screens look twice as good as the first and the detail on the characters in these two are excellent! And finally we get some type of info that lets us peak into (at least a little) some of the story. I like the sound of this operation idea but as for the sucking up badies thing, Im not sure how they'll pull off the look of it but Im sure it'll come out great.

Killa_47 07-16-2004 12:28 PM

yeh it deffinately looks like a crossbow.

Dualist 07-16-2004 03:04 PM

Those screenshots are awesome. I love the second screen.

I'm dying to see some gameplay movies. Thanks for the screens Alcar.

Hey, did anyone notice Stranger's position in the first screen? It looks weird. Like he has his neck out, and his back slanted. Lol :D

Miss Odd 07-16-2004 03:49 PM

That is so cool ^^ I can't wait to see the fmvs also! If thats the type of graphics that we are to expect from the gameplay, then I reallllly want to see the movies!!!

ANN NEELY 07-16-2004 05:12 PM

Holy Schmoly!

Whoa! These screenshots are awesome! The detail is amazing! Cheers to Alcar!
All this excitement over the past few days is going to give me a heart attack!
Bad guys on mine carts, just when you thought Big Bro Sligs were trouble.... :p

Majic 07-16-2004 05:52 PM

Stranger looks a bit odd, and choppy in the first screen. But that's the only major thing I'm seeing. Every other flaw is extremely small, petty stuff, that would take forever to completely clear up for the whole game. Though I do like the distortion around the explosion in the second screen. It's all wavey and such, somewhat realistic. Not the most groundbreaking, uber detailed, or revolutionary, ,ut looks very strong and non glitchy. A tad worried about framerate, after all, this is a 3rd person, well detailed game with what looks to be massive enviroments. Abe Babe said nothing of any frame rate problems though, so, I may rest peacefully. Somewhat.

I s'pose playing Morrowind for 3 hours a day just sort of give you that sort of paranoia. *Cringe* Running through Vivec with the Boots of Blinding Speed in 3rd person runs horribly, beyond words.

Eriken 07-16-2004 10:55 PM

The screenshots look way too normal to be oddworld. There's no overtone to it to give it a fantasy feel. Munch's Oddysee looked very green/purple most of the time. As someone said before, even the props and settings look too normal.

I was hoping for a darker, more serious feel to the game as well. While that would kinda go against what oddworld stands for, it's just the kinda image they present with the first video clips and just how Stranger himself looks.

They need to odden up the environments a bit, give everything it's own distinct feel, and make everything fit the mood of the game better.

Fez 07-16-2004 11:25 PM

This game looks incredible.

oddguy 07-17-2004 12:07 AM

It still looks like the straps on Stranger's arm is painted on...a part of him, rather than something wrapped around his arm.

That's my only problem...the rest is amazing!

-oddguy

Xavier 07-17-2004 01:00 AM

love the frame with the little egg in it, sooooooooo cute...
that the kind of detail I love in oddworld, keep going!

MojoMan220 07-17-2004 05:09 AM

The first pic has great lighting, geometry, and the clakker looks very much like he did in the FMV. I still think Stranger himself drastically needs higher-res texturing. The gun in the second pic looks super detailed and has high-res texturing. The explosion is great, but the environment looks pretty bad, but may be just a tiny piece to a gigantic level. Overall, things are looking very good.

Plus the shadow-mapping on his arms and boots is highly distorted.

Wowwweee those are awesome. So excited. Had a chat with a gent at EB Games last night about Stranger..I'm just getting SO excited!

Thanks for posting!

Wil 07-17-2004 11:10 AM

I missed the crossbows and distortion waves on my first viewings, so I decided to take another look at the screenshots. :p

The first image is indeed beautifully lit, and well decorated (in a sense ;)), if with uninteresting furniture. My mum appeared while I was looking at it, even she said it looked terrific. :p So there. As much as I'd love to stuff that fat cock (What? It's a male chicken!) into his own furnace, I have to admit the picture of the eggs (maybe his own unhatched children?) is adorable, in a weird sort of way. I still don't understand how Clakkerz are meant to open books or tune radios with those feathers, though.

The crossbow in the second picture looks sublime. I'm personally not familiar with large explosions producing distortion effects, Majic, so I couldn't say whether that's realistic or not. The Thud-Slugs looks like it might have armour upgrades already. Mum was a bit distrubed by the Chippunk, though. The more she looked at it, the less she liked it, and rushed out of the room. She said it looked like, "Something you'd pull out of a hat." Your guess is as good as mine. Again, the rocks, and this time the trees, look great.

Xavier 07-17-2004 11:31 AM

PIC1:
I love the way the crossbow and the live amo on it are made, the crosbow is nearly photo realisitc, and the live amo very well done!

the trees are still very good, and the explosion effect looks nice.

I still think the ennemies could have been done better, but they are good. look at their amo, sniper, crossbow? aw this is going to hurt.

anyway, the crosbow evolved in a good way, compare with attach...

PIC2:
still the strings at Stranger's arms, doesn't look real enough
the rest of the character looks great

I like all the little details very much... especially all that fournitures :p

the Clakkerz is well rendered, maybe the clothes could have been better

Oddish 07-17-2004 11:40 AM

Well bee's is somthing to pull from on top a hat :p But the explosion could of been a diffrent colour instead of yellow. Becuase it come's from nature, mabey like green or somthing. And i don't know why they should'ny of kept the same stlye trains ( coming from top side) from AE, instead of a non-oddworldy style. I just think that it's a good idea, quite odd. The envroments don't have much (again) odderness, but we've seen little from the envroments.

I would love to see even more Live ammo! Hey if Stranger dose'nt like guns, them why is he using Animals as a weapon. Is'nt that more cruel, then killing an industral, or dose those the little critter's deserv to die. And i'm glad the Skunz gas is'nt green, instead of yellow. To much green gas i say. Oh and OWI got my idea, sniper! Well it's isint realy an idea, but using wasps is. Like in the simpsons( always a good example) when ther'e in Africa, and shooting wasps at the Greenpeace.

Heh, how about a meep on fire. hmmm.... give's me an idea.

Shell Man 07-17-2004 01:55 PM

...

I would say that the environments will get more Odd as you progress throughout the game, to go with Stranger's transformation perhaps. Although I would like to see some of the Gargantuan and bizzare looking environments like those in AO and AE. I'm still not concerned with the quality of the graphics so far, I think they will be nicely polished in the final version.

Al the Vykker 07-17-2004 07:13 PM

The detail on the first person view was incredible, overall its nice to see some in game shots finally.

Oddish 07-18-2004 09:16 AM

I mean if look just how big and highress the screenshots are, you'll still see a lot of detail there.

Nate 07-18-2004 02:20 PM

The clakkerz are meant to be stupid and irritating so that probably goes the same for their living quarters. Lovely detail though.

Wil 07-19-2004 12:24 AM

Stupid and irritating living quarters? How does that figure?
