interesting idea

I had an idea that I thought everyone might find interesting. What if Lanning got togethor Genndy Tartakovsky (creator of samurai jack, powerpuff girls and dexters lab) and created an oddworld cartoon for cartoon network. Tartakovsky is a true visionary in his field as is Lanning. Could be great.

paramiteabe 06-10-2003 02:29 AM

Yea it would be great but would it be the Oddworld we all know and love? Like haveing that dark humor. I don't know if anybody would want an Oddworld cartoon. But I wouldn't rule the idea out. It would be a great cartoon if they make it right and I mean makeing it serous with dark humor.

You know anime type cartoons in the way they are serious? I would like to see Oddworld like that but not anime just something dark and serious but humorous and it would be really artistic if they dident make it computer animated but made it sort of like the Voltron seris but not Anime. That would be cool as long as its done right. Like animated violenece where you have blood and see desturbing pictures. The key thing here is makeing it right.

Wil 06-10-2003 09:42 AM

Cartoon is not a word I like to associate with Oddworld in the slightest. I just need to look at the way Mudokons bounce about when they fall and hear the annoying 'boing' when Munch hops along, and I start mourning the loss of the Oddworld I fell for. Well, not exactly, but I hate all the cartoon noises and actions in the Oddworld games, unless their specifically part of the game's score and work well.

There was at some point going to be an Online Animated Oddworld Series, and I'd still love to see more of the Oddworld Universe in short animated episodes, as long as they were true to Oddworld's style - dark humour, lightly-submerged messages, truely odd yet totally believable characters, locations and stories. Of course there's the risk that shorter production time for each episode would compromise on quality, but it doesn't, then I'd love the idea.

Xavier 06-10-2003 10:38 AM

if it is still in the oddworld spirit (like AO and AE and not that much MO) why not, as long as it stays coherent with the games, the story and the others episodes...

but I think it was planned to be a TV cartoon of it, but I'm not sure

:

CAA is helping Lorne Lanning and Sherry McKenna, creators of the "Oddworld" video game, bring their vision for Abe, a hero of the stories, beyond the game realm and into TV and movies.

Fez 06-10-2003 01:50 PM

i dont thinks its a good idea, i mean, think of some of the first oddworld games, they were violent and gory. Is this the sort of stuff you want to be showing on a kids channel?

OANST 06-10-2003 08:59 PM

cartoon network is not really a kids channel. 40 percent of their demographic are people 18 to 32. I also believe that Mr. Tartakovsky would not only understand oddworlds dark humor but portray with his usual excellence. Give samurai jack a watch. Their are episodes that can go twenty minutes without having a word spoken and still riveting because of facial expressions and raw emotion. As for the person who is afraid of an oddworld cartoon because it may be childish with funny springy noises and such you need to evolve your idea of cartoons. Lorne Lanning once said that games are one of the greatest artforms of this time. I believe that he is right but I would also enter cartoons into that. music movies and books have taken an intelligent nosedive while games and cartoons are starting to raise the bar for all forms of art. viva la oddworld!

Please read this!
:

"It was an amazing game," says Lorne Lanning, creator of the Oddworld series. "But it(=Pikmin) was about cute little carrots." He's quick to add that he finds Miyamoto's games inspiring as a designer. "But I don't play them for the same reason I don't watch Powerpuff Girls."

I think....He(LL) does not watch a childish cartoon,anime,manga... but, he does not dislike cartoon....
He wants more creative cartoon,anime,manga....
and OWI disgust "imitating", they want something new...
atusiya's father...

OANST 06-10-2003 10:47 PM

The powerpuff girls were made as a childrens cartoon. The oddworld cartoon obviously would not be. The creator of that cartoon does not limit himself to that area but instead explores new territory in the world of popular cartoons. You are thinking in the past and ignoring new possibilities.

TheRaisin 06-10-2003 10:53 PM

Bah!

Ach, I don't think there's a person alive that could truly turn OddWorld into a cartoon without compromising it's essential soul. Until the Mozart of cartoons is born, just stick to games, eh? And some CG movies, that would rock. Ooh, and maybe some cool eight-inch poseable action figures! Gahlhhlhlhl.... (insert drool here)

OANST 06-10-2003 11:03 PM

Personally I do believe that I would wet myself for some action figures

Sekto Springs 06-10-2003 11:50 PM

I at least understand about the history of manga, anime, and cartoon.
I don't deny the past. I like them.
---
[in my opinion]
But in several of these years, especially They(= Japanese style-manga, Japanese style-anime, and cartoon) use to have been very influential in video games.
Most of videogame's company accept them...Why? ,most of gamer want them ?
Developers make an easy compromise, don't they?..
OWI even could not help taking it in. For example, Fuzzles, Meetle.
Do they(OWI) show a tendency to do more?
Is it Odd-style that they belive ? I don't think so.( even if it is the thing of what existing style)
In fact,it is the mission of developers to make a profit from their videogame that they make.
However, it may disagree with the sense of values about the creativity that developers belive.
Night and day, they effort to synchronize between their sense of values and their profits.
OWI finished it until now.
I hope OWI effort to synchronize between their sense of values and their profits from now..
-----------
at last:)
I like your thinking ,idea. and Welcome to OWF..

paramiteabe 06-11-2003 02:40 AM

If there is an Oddworld cartoon seris I think the best way to make it is in CG just like the films in the games. Oh mann think about an Oddworld seris as I drool all over the keyboard!:D And just think possiably action figures for tradeing purposes not toys, Only items of the trade in our Oddworld community. Wow I am foaming at the mouth just thinking about it. And then a possiable theme park to go with the Oddworld theme. Look at Dysney why not Oddworld.

But back to reality it won't happen and if it does it will be well beyond the quintology and the movies.

The word 'cartoon' implies that it's childish and aimed at children. I'm not denying it's a form of art, I'm saying that Oddworld is clearly not a cartoon. If it was animated properly in anime or CGI then it would be fine...as long as it didn't incorporate cartoon aspects that obviously do not suit it. As for what you're saying about 'Samurai Jack', well I've never heard of it, but I'd love to see it. I'm not in to anime very much, but that's only because I have no access to it, as far as I know. Having watched the Animatrix I'd love to investigate the power of Eastern animation. But I'll leave cartoons alone, thank you.

I don't want anything of oddworld in this style!
yuk hell no

Wil 06-11-2003 01:24 PM

Agreed, that's not the style I'm thinking of when I think of an Oddworld comic/manga/anime, but I think there's still something in the idea. There was a site a while back that had Oddworld cartoons on it, but I think the guy who ran it god fed up with Oddworld and decided to shut it down or stop developing it. Anyway, a style more like that is what I'm thinking of.

Unless it's CGI, which frankly, would look better.

Xavier 06-11-2003 01:27 PM

Are you talking about enversi?

if yes you are right, he had some realy cool comics, to bad he never made a whole story

Wil 06-11-2003 01:35 PM

I don't know, the name doesn't sound familiar, but the fact that he shut down his site when he heard about the SoBe thing rings more than a few bells. 'Oddworld Inhabited' sounds about right, so maybe it was him. A shame he got so pissed off about all that, he was a great talent (if he's the guy I'm thinking of). Was his the website where the main theme, as it were, was Mudokons mining in a rock, and all the material was inside the rock?

Xavier 06-11-2003 01:40 PM

yep that's it, he is also the one who made several Winamp skins

http://www.geocities.com/george_t_gimp/

Wil 06-11-2003 02:20 PM

My God! I known George T Gimp! He was one of the most prolific members of the old GT Forums and the Exoddus Club. We were all wondering where he'd gone. Thank god for coincidences like this, heh? Cheers muchly for that link, it's solved a conundrum.

Xavier 06-11-2003 03:00 PM

is the Exoddus club still running? I tought it was dead...
well now you know, he was pissed of because of the SoBe in the game

Wil 06-11-2003 03:17 PM

Yeah, I read his last post while checking out his profile. Sad, that.

And yes, the Exoddus Club is still going.

Xavier 06-11-2003 03:29 PM

and there are still members of OWI there? and is sydney still there too?

Wil 06-11-2003 04:48 PM

No, I'm sure Sydney's left Oddworld behind now. I don't think there are any recent posts from anyone from the Forums besides myself, although they certainly do read the Forums.

EDIT: I thought you said are there members of OWF, sorry. Lorne Lanning is still a member, but we're all certain he's forgotten it. He certainly hasn't been about. I posted in the Oddworld Group just today to make sure Yahoo didn't delete it. Paul O'Connor was a member of that, but the place has been pretty much abandoned since Munch's Oddysee came out, and it wasn't exactly prospering before that. There's some nice stuff on there, which is why I didn't want it to be deleted. Nothing I haven't shared with everyone or that isn't already public knowledge (unless there's something I forgot), so there's no need for you to worry - we have neither secret information nor insider contacts. :p

Xavier 06-11-2003 05:06 PM

okay thank you, wasn't there also a image database with some rare pictures (you told there was one of sam if I remember well)

anyway I guess we will know everything once you put the encyclopedia online

Wil 06-11-2003 05:16 PM

Oh god, didn't I tell you? Yahoo did something weird to the place ('renewed' it or something, I don't know) and we lost our entire photo gallery. That's very very annoying, because there was a sample picture of Sam in there, a Chronicler concept sketch which I don't know ever made its way out, and I'm sure a couple of things. That was quite a while ago. I'll ask if anyone saved them too their own computers (presumably they came from them to begin with), and I'll look on The Internet Archives to see if they have anything. They don't usually save pictures, so I'll cross my fingers.

Xavier 06-11-2003 05:28 PM

oh :fuzsad: that's sad...
I hope you will find back some of them, anyway I don't think I have any of the ones you aer talking about, sounds very intresting
