Oddyse and Exoddus screens wallpaper collection?
 

Hello Everyone!

I have been a long time lurker on these forums (The ARG is so fascinating and it has been blast reading all the posts about it. Especially when asset 98 got terminated)

I am making this post to request something. I am willing to help with this request but I am afraid that I cannot do it alone.

Imagine if someone would be able to capture all the screens (including the secret areas) of Abe's Oddysee and Exoddus. Even better if Abe and other characters are not in the picture (like when you load the game, the characters appear after the background appears, so I hope something like this could be possible). It would be fine if each picture would be less than 1080p, since the game is old.

I really love the original two games and I really think that each individual screen would be an awesome painting just by itself.

I am willing to do everything I can to get a massive wallpaper collection made from in game screens, but I do not know the best way to go around doing it, and I might need some help.

If someone already did this I would really appreciate a link. But if not, what do you guys think of this? Maybe the guys who hack and mod the game have access to the screens already?

You can find a lot of screenshots of the first two games in the Oddworld Library. Most of them are not really 1080p tho of course.

Ya but, I think it would be amazing to have a collection of every single screen from the games.

Paul has created an Abes Oddysee and Exoddus PC sprite/background extractor for use with custom AO/AE levels. All of the backgrounds and sprites can be ripped using this. I remember one time having all the bg files on my old laptop but unfortunately they've been lost to time and built-in obsolescence. But it's your best bet, I'd say.

@JayDee Could you give me some help with ripping the bgs? I have no idea how to use this program LOL.

I myself have never used the program so I'd not be much use I'm afraid, but I'm trawling through the forums trying to find the link to the online repository where I originally found them all, so I'll post back here if I find anything.

I'm having a mess around with the decoder and convertor tools now, if I get anything conclusive I'll upload them all to an online album where you can easily view them. But, if I recall correctly I remember all of the BGs being stretched 50% vertically so they may look a little strange.

Edit: I've managed to get all of the CAM files for the backgrounds, it may take a little while for me to upload them all as trying to do them all at once crashes Imgur, but I'll post links to the albums and continually update them all until the set is complete.

Well, they're all done now. Some of them are in a seemingly weird order because the convertor outputs the screens from left to right, but otherwise they should all be there minus some credits and extra stuff.

Here is a link to a video I made once I had extracted & converted all the CAM's (using Paul's tool) then fixed the aspect ratio. I found it very immersive to watch all the environments as a blur.

I also feel, JayDee, that they may have already been uploaded somewhere but kudos to you for putting the effort in.

EDIT: I doubt they will as it's not the best practise to share game assets openly and if you really wanted them you could get them yourself.

I was considering either making a new thread in Oddworld Mods & Hacks, or asking a mod to move this there and sticky it, because it seems like a useful resource for any would-be Modders in the community and I've wanted these available for a while for use in any other fan projects. Since I can't do it myself

I remember them being uploaded somewhere when Paul's editor first came about. But that was years ago and I searched for a good bit for whetw Id found hem before deciding to piss off my ISP and upload them all.

Holy shit man, that video is creepy. So big, so empty, and with that music? Oddworld always creeped me out and kept me on edge, at least the original two games. To be honest, I still get some Abe related nightmares from time to time lol. Guess these games really left a mark on me. I can't even listen to the soundtrack in my room alone, scares the crap outta me.

I'm 99% sure that someone on OWF has actually done what the OP suggested, many years ago. Someone with more patience than me may search around for it.

I remembered this being done years ago aswell, but I gave up looking since uploading them myself was faster than searching. (Or atleast easier on the eyes compared to scrolling through all those old posts.)

I might have a bulk image editor tucked away on my hard drive somewhere, so if I get around to fixing the aspect ratio on these I'll reupload.

Alright, so I've bulk edited all of the CAMs from AO and AE to their intended aspect ratio. So again, I'll update these as fast as my internet allows.

But I've played AO so many times over, saving all 99 Mudokons, and I've NEVER seen this screen before (attached). Was it just left out of the game or something? It's really interesting to see :)

Weirdly enough this screen wasn't actually left out of the game, but you wouldnt have managed to find it through normal play. You can still access that screen and even walk around in it by using the -DDCHEAT to fly through the ground in the Scrabanian Temple.

I can't embed on my phone but Kapteeni did a video on it here showing off how to get there.

There's a couple places similar where game objects seem to have been left in without much of an actual purpose. If you fall off the ledges on these screens in Bonewerkz then you end up getting sucked into an invisible well that spits you out somewhat safely on the other side.

Thanks for the welcome. I usually start things but never finish them, so after I read all the ARG forums and got the bgs that JayDee posted I completely forgot about the forums. Sorry guys, I do not want to seem like I juat came here for backgrounds. I am usually a nomad that does not stay in the same place for long. But from what I have read, you guys are cooller than other people I "met" LOL.
