Australians Not Allowed To Play L4D2

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news...n-in-Australia

Sucks for you.

:

This kind of violence is apparently considered "high impact" in Australia and therefore completely unsuitable for gamers under the age of 18. Since the country has no gamers over the age of 18 anyway, the board decided that there was no point in allowing its sale.
Being a gamer above the age 18 in Australia is obviously a crime that hold the death penalty...

Seriously how stupid can you be. At the very least give it an 18+ rating if your head is so far up your ass to think that people will be traumatized by this game. I don't understand why people from the 1910's are assigned to choosing age ratings for video games, which are played from people from the 1990's and up. You'd assume people from the 1990's should be judging those ages but sure, act stupid.

Besides, anyone who knows games also knows that the grapics on the Source engine aren't exactly top notch and the gore in Valve games is generally kept to a minimum. I can't say I find L4D very gory, I've seen much much worse in other games which were apparently fine. So unless they increased the gore level by 500% percent I really don't see the big deal.

Australia is always at the assend of censorship. Isn't their internet filtered/fucked now too? I heard something about Encyclopedia Dramatica being blocked over there

God damn criminals

Sekto Springs 09-17-2009 03:23 PM

If Bioshock wasn't produced in Australia, that would probably be banned too.

I think they ban violent games in Australia to limit the risk of all the gunfire and blood awakening some kind of dormant rage passed down to them by their criminal ancestors. The last thing we need is for Australia to turn into a violent penal colony again ala Escape From New York.

Hehehe, "penal"

Dixanadu 09-17-2009 04:01 PM

I wish I lived in Australia then, so I wouldn't have to see the stupid thing on sale.

Come on Valve, work on something better. Hint hint Half Life Episode Three wink wink.

There is popular support for adding the 18+ category so that game classification will be consistent with film and tv, but to make the change they need unanimous support of all the state Attorney Generals. Unfortunately, Michael Atkinson, the AG of South Australia (which is a bit of a backwater anyway) has refused to play ball, which is why you'll occassionally hear him being lambasted in Zero Punctuation. Basically, we're waiting for him to be caught up in some sort of chair-sniffing scandal and lose his job before anything happens.

The government was proposing a filter that would block out child porn. It's being tested. It's failing miserably. It won't happen.

And as for the original article, I love this bit:
:

There is one bit of good news in all this, however: The Classification Board just wrote possibly the best review for L4D2 that Valve could ever hope for. Decapitations and limb dismemberment? Locational damage and spilling intestines? I am so there.

OANST 10-22-2009 07:18 AM

The reevaluation came back the same. Refused Classification. However, they made a version of the game that dialed back the gore, and this version is approved. So, you will get to play L4D2, but my copy is going to better than yours.

Crashpunk 10-22-2009 11:16 AM

Be glad. L4D2 looks nowhere near as good as the first one.

Using what criteria?

moxco 10-23-2009 11:42 PM

I remember when the the OFLC made Rockstar recall and edit GTA: SA. Apparantly they didn't like the prostitutes.

Strike Witch 10-24-2009 12:13 AM

I'll wait for comparisons before I buy.

Or just get a copy from Singapore.

they'll bring it back in downloadable updates

this has been the plan since day one

Daxter King 10-28-2009 02:20 PM

Probably on PC, but I doubt it for 360 owners. I know at least in the US the ESRB still rates DLC on Xbox Live.

Havoc 10-28-2009 04:17 PM

Whoop, decrypting the demo :D.

AlexFili 10-28-2009 04:26 PM

Maybe this is a pointless bump, but I hated L4D1 because there was such a small amount that you could do and it was the same thing way too often through. From the L4D2 demo I've played, it has much much more weapons, the new characters aren't even bad and the new special infected and look of the older ones makes it alot better. Also, the new melee weapons are actually really fun to use, especially the machete and the guitar and at least there isn't just 2 types of shotgun and automatic gun and 1 type of long range weapon, there are something like 4 types of shotguns, 3 different types of pistols (including a DEagle which is nice), 5 or so different types of automatic rifles and smg's and stuff and about 3 or 4 long range weapons which are completely different to each other and then there are just tons of melee weapons. Anyway graphics wise it's also much better but that's not the point of playing the game really.

Also the game has the grenade launcher as a main weapon along with the others mentioned, and after using it, despite it being unfinished...it's pretty awesome.

Anyway tl;dr: Australians got the demo but missed out on all the gore and stuff as well as SWAT zombies. And the demo was 100x better than L4D 1.

Mac Sirloin 11-01-2009 10:37 AM

Error launcher.

Also How do the Melee weapons work? Do they completely replace your primary or what?

Havoc 11-01-2009 05:34 PM

No they replace your pistols slot.

I think Episode Three just completely slipped Valves mind. We probably won't even see it till the next generation of consoles. As for the whole LFD2 thing, just download it off steam.

Havoc 11-01-2009 08:00 PM

Actually I think they are working on it. During an interview about L4D2, Chet let something slip when he said "Employees are just so excited to play Left 4 Dead. The gameplay, the story. We've had people who are working on a... another project, and they tell me it's great to play something completely different for a change."

It's not the EXACT quote but you get the idea. I dunno which clip I heard it in. Anyway, I wouldn't know what other project Valve would have besides EP3 or HL3, and both are good news.

...aaaaaaand the moral of the story is: if you're over 18 and a gamer, don't go to Austrailia.

At least they didn't ban all games for a time like Greece did :fuzmad:

mr.odd 11-02-2009 01:06 PM

What is with the red text?

Havoc 11-02-2009 01:10 PM

He's new. He prolly doesn't know we assrape people for writing their posts in a custom color or font.

OANST 11-02-2009 01:12 PM

Hmmmm. Who do we know who would have enough knowledge of the forums to make a Hobo joke immediately after joining? Hmmmmm.

mr.odd 11-02-2009 01:13 PM

MS?

Havoc 11-02-2009 01:32 PM

BAN!!!

Nate 11-02-2009 10:19 PM

He's not MS1029. My guess is he's Reece Charles.

I thought HL2 Ep 3 was announced to be released late 2010?

OANST 11-03-2009 07:30 AM

There has been no official announcement other than them saying it will be out eventually.
