Rain?

iv'e been wondering......why was there never no rain in ao and ae?

The Dark Mudokon 08-14-2007 11:21 AM

Didn't notice. But I doubt there would be no rain in Oddworld or else there wouldn't be any living creature on it 'cuz no rain means there's no water evaporating from the lakes and ocean, which would mean their empty.

Zozo the Zrilufet 08-14-2007 11:30 AM

Probably because it would be hard to animate, and it would be acid rain due to pollution.

skillya_glowi 08-14-2007 12:29 PM

Maybe because it wasn't built like an RPG?

Slaveless 08-14-2007 12:47 PM

I'm pretty sure that there is rain on Oddworld. I think one of the purposes the Storm Circles had in MO was to make rain come and refill the rivers, waters the plants, and the such.

The Dark Mudokon 08-14-2007 01:36 PM

Well, the oceans and lakes practically refill themselves 'cuz rain is evaporated water from lakes and ocean that condense and falls back unto the land. :P

And as a natural ecosystem, Oddworld should have the same cycle as the earth so it can suffice itself. So, I wouldn't find it logical that there always chamans that have to make rain fall on Oddworld, in that case, how would chamans exist in the Oddworld Stone Age? Chaman stuff wouldn't be in native mentality.....

You know, I have experienced whole weeks in RL in which there was no rain. That more than encompasses the supposed time frame of AO and AE. Maybe the reason was, rather than a devastating meteorological phenomenon, it was simply a short dry spell.

Then again, many levels were indoors. Who's to say it didn't rain then?

The functional reason was that there was no need to introduce such weather to the games. It may have even been a technical impossibility.

Xavier 08-14-2007 02:51 PM

Doesn't it rain in the opening movie of MO?

Jordan 08-14-2007 03:09 PM

There's several reasons why there wasn't rain in AO and AE.

1. It could interfere with other animations and disrupt palletes and movement cycles.

2. Most of the outside areas were holy grounds, like the Monsaic Lines and Paramonia, and certain incantations and spells could have protected the enviroment from rain.

3. And as Zozo stated, it would be acid rain, and it'd damage areas like Paramonia.

Nate 08-14-2007 08:32 PM

BM's point is the most coherent; the stories of AO and AE cover at most a few days in Abe's life. It's not implausible that a small area of the planet could go without rain for such a short amount of time.

Carnix 08-15-2007 04:39 AM

If I was making a game like AO and AE I wouldn't bother with rain, it would just slow down game production, Make the game run slower on less developt computers, make it dificult to see in game, and (all in all) be fairly pointless. What reason would there be to show rain in the game? It's a platform game, not a real time simulation.

Nate 08-15-2007 06:12 AM

Whilst it certainly wasn't needed in AO or AE, hypothetically it could be introduced as a game mechanic in a similar game or used to create extra atmosphere in a level.

ZANGG 08-17-2007 05:04 AM

Who's to say rain even exists in Oddworld? It's not a real world, it doesn't have to follow the same rules Earth does.

Fuzzle King 08-17-2007 05:35 AM

yes but say like erm..paramonia.its full of trees right?trees an plants need rain and sunlight to live.

Carnix 08-17-2007 05:51 AM

fuzzle king, did you not read the previous post?

I'm pretty sure that there is rain on Oddworld. I think one of the purposes the Storm Circles had in MO was to make rain come and refill the rivers, waters the plants, and the such.

Words to remember. Anyway, I will give a little more in depth explamation on why there is rain on Oddworld. There are clouds on Oddworld. If anyone had taken a science class involving the water cycle, they will realize that after the clouds become dense with water vapor, it has to release rain. On Oddworld, that just might take longer, but still.

And the cacti on Scrabania. They could only survive by preserving water within their inners in order continue living. There is no water land forms for miles. So the few rain dropplets that come onto Scrabania is the only way cacti could survive in that desert.

Also, without rain, the water bodies shouldn't even exist on Oddworld. There would be water used by animals, but then suddenly the water body can't refill. The water body is disappearing! Why? No rain. Yet that isn't the case. There has to be rain on Oddworld.

Any more questions?

Carnix 08-17-2007 06:35 AM

As I'm sure I tried to explain erlier, though oddworld in general is an imaginary world, oddworld AO and AE (the subjects that this thread is rotating around) are games. There is no rain because oddworld inhabitants decided against the idea, the cacti could be floating on the clouds for all I care.

The only part where there is rain is, as you say, the circle. But that is there for the same reason as meeps are in MO... oddworld inhabitants wanted something new for abe to do.

Slaveless 08-17-2007 06:51 AM

How said there wasn't rain on Oddworld? Certainly not OWI.

I never said that was the only place rain was. And there was different kinds of precepitation for Abe to in-counter, such as the snow that somehow appeared on Oddworld through the seasons. And that happened because of how the game was played! SW even had snow! So it is more than likely that there is rain in Oddworld, since it would be silly to assume otherwise.

And I think Xavier has already said that rain has appeared in movies. So it is very likely that there is rain on Oddworld, not because it was something for Abe to do.

Carnix 08-17-2007 07:11 AM

again I shall explain that fuzzle king was talking of AO and AE only. That discludes rain from MO and SW. And it's a game!! there was rain where rain was wanted and no rain where it wasn't! There was no water cycle of any sort because programing that would have taken a bomb load of time. In oddworld itself I agree with you entirely but My agument is purly for AO and AE.

Bullet Magnet 08-17-2007 12:07 PM

I'm going to stick with the theory that the outdoor sections happened to be set during several of the mind-bogglingly improbable short periods in which generous quantities of water just wasn't falling out of the sky. The weather forecast would show the hypothetical "cloud without raindrops" symbol and the mythical "sunshine" design that have never graced the screens of our Earth televisions since... over two hours ago.

Mac Sirloin 08-17-2007 01:22 PM

You are all forgetting one miniscule, impossibly small, and nearly unimportant detail.

ONE OF THE MOST PLOT HEAVY SECTIONS OF STRANGERS WRATH HAD RAIN.

THEN LATER, THERE WAS SNOW.

DUN DUN DUN.

Also, this was to contradict people saying there was no rain, because I know that were supposed to be talking about AO and AE.

Quite true, so technically there is rain in OW, just not in some games. :p

How did you sum up what I was trying to say so quickly?

However, The origanal debate was why there is no rain in AO or AE which I still think is because the programers couldn't be bothered because it wasn't necersary.

ZANGG 08-18-2007 08:00 AM

Let's just say, pick whichever reason you like the best:

* Because OWI didn't put it in.
* Because there isn't.
* Because it's a game and doesn't have to have rain.
* Because you touch yourself at night.

mudling 08-21-2007 11:32 PM

does it realy matter, why is there no elums in AE? because maybe it didn't suit the story, because there was no real point, because it was too hard technically (as others have said). so what if there is no rain in AE, buy a game with rain, as was said above, there is rain in SW, therefore there is rain in oddworld, end of story. :)
maybe I would have wanted rain in AE, but I don't have AE, and it is too late to add it in anyway, and it realy wouldn't do too much.

Bullet Magnet 08-25-2007 05:01 AM

Elum wasn't in AE because he was too big, memory-wise. I suspect his return was written, then cut. His scenes in AO were carefully scripted, and is why those levels are the buggiest when pushed.

OANST 08-26-2007 09:03 AM

Have you ever seen a day without rain? Maybe these things happened on one of those days.

I can't help it. Sometimes I just need to release my sexual tension.

Mistress of Oddworld 08-26-2007 05:18 PM

Well AO is side on, and quite a distance, no close ups apart from the FMVs. So maybe the raindrops were to small to see.
