How do you rip Oddworld Sounds/Music?

I've heard a lot of ripped music and played fan games with ripped sounds.. I've been trying to rip sound effects but the problem is the background music. Is there a way to stop it while getting the Sound Effects?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I believe some specific areas in the game don't have background music.
Apart from that, I'm at a loss. Maybe there's something in Tools. No wait...I'm thinking of Emulators.

Well, everyone who has ripped music has done so by simply recording the sounds live and then editing out sound effects. Not sure what other options you have.

Heh, this is actually a little ironic. A guy contacted me yesterday asking for sound effects too, namely the forest/swamp BG sounds played in the game. He was asking for a composition of these into a chillout song. So anyway, I made him a little song for him to listen to while sleeping. I don't know if you were asking for these sounds or were you referring to gunfire etc.? If that's the case, I could rip those for you. It might take a little over a week though, since I got some exams right now, but after that I should be able to get those sounds for you.

So, yeah, if you want me to do that for you, let me know and please write which sounds you would like me to rip.

Yeh i guess there good too.. but iv allready got the electric barrier.

I'm going to use a basic line-in setup, like I did when I ripped the game music.

I already got one of those on my AE rip, the SligSpeak has been ripped so you can use those samples if you want. I might've used a sample of the mine humming as well, so I'm going to check around and maybe post it later here. Other than that, those shouldn't be too hard to get, just be a little patient.

Killy 10-18-2006 08:09 PM

Yeah I figured you meant that, the bleeping sound is easy to acquire as well, but I just thought you might need this as well, I don't know.

Oddworld: Fight For Freedom.

Nate 10-20-2006 10:44 PM

Good title, but that doesn't really tell us all that much.

ZANGG 10-21-2006 04:06 AM

It's a fangame he's making where you play as a slig. There's a topic on it in Fan Corner, if you're after more info.

Here are some sounds I managed to rip and edit today;

ZANGG 10-22-2006 02:40 PM

Abespeak plzzz? (for Random Oddworld Adventures)

(Including the whistles from AO if possible. I don't need the rest of the AO-only speak)

What sort of special abilities does the slig have?

Wait, I'm sorry, who's actually requesting stuff here? SligStorm needed the SligSpeak sounds, at least have the decency to explain why you need them if you're going to take it for granted that I'm just going to sit down and rip it - for all it's worth I do have a schedule and I do have a life outside these forums.

It's for Random Oddworld Adventures, as can be seen in that quote. It's a fangame I'm working on, which is basically aiming to be a recreation of the originals, but with editability. (Possibly the closest we'll ever get to a true level editor)

Sorry for not explaining before.

Killy 10-23-2006 02:41 AM

I see, my bad. Well, I've ripped the GameSpeak for AE, but it doesn't contain any of the whistles. Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of AO, so I won't be able to rip this for you. However, I might be able to download and emulate the game, but that might take a while, bear with me.

ZANGG 10-23-2006 07:25 PM

That's alright. I have the games(PC versions though), so if you can just tell me how to rip them, that would also be good enough. Either way, thanks!

Killy 10-23-2006 09:22 PM

Well, since quality is out of the question here, just use any recording software you might have around (Windows Recorder, TotalRecorder) or log it from your soundcard using the built-in recording-feature (assuming you have one, otherwise, run the software.)

Hit record, play the game, avoid having any other sounds around and then play the samples. Don't play them too soon one after the other, try and get some gaps between them to avoid interference. When finished, hit stop on the recorder and save the file as .wav (Windows PCM or equivalent). After that, you're free to separate the samples from the files as you please (using any editing software you have lying around) or you can send it to me and I'll cut, edit etc.

ZANGG 10-23-2006 09:57 PM

Hm, is there any recording software you can reccomend(to log what the soundcard is playing, that is)? Sorry if I'm asking too much.

Killy 10-24-2006 02:35 AM

... Just read thoroughly and it'll all make sense.
:

or log it from your soundcard using the built-in recording-feature (assuming you have one, otherwise, run the software.
Either you use a publicly released program to record, or you log the sound using your soundcard's feature - if there is such feature, that is.

ZANGG 10-24-2006 07:49 PM

Yeah, I get what you mean. I just don't know of any such software sorry. (My soundcard doesn't have it built in - it's a useless piece of junk that's built onto the motherboard.)

Killy 10-25-2006 04:35 AM

I'm sorry, I know I sound rude, but you're not reading what I've written and it's just a tad annoying. I'm sure you'll figure this one out though...

:

Ok, let's analyse. Any given computer with a Windows OS will have the Windows Recorder lying around in the Start Menu. No need to download that. If you don't have that or don't want to use it, there's the TotalRecorder, meaning there's your recommendation right there. Now you know what to look for, that wasn't too hard, was it? ;)
