I imagine it's down to a general cultural psychology that men can defend themselves but women can't - even it it's not a fair assessment of both situations.
|
40% of domestic violence is suffered by men? does that make the other 60% suffered by women?
i'm not sexist, but a set of bollocks and testosterone and a stupid stubborn brain really do make things chemically/physically different between males and females, and this usually amounts to the male putting up with more physical torment at work or just in day to day life as they physically burn more energy (also because they're heavier). males also naturally grow more muscular than females, unless you're purposely trying not to, because that's nature. for some reason nature dictates the male of the species with the really delicate crown jewels swinging between their legs is to be the one that goes out wrestling sabre-toothed tigers for food or whatever. obviously not now, but it's pretty much physically engrained within us. guys will naturally grow 'heavier' than gals. there's many physical differences between the sexes, in size especially. like the penis. we seem to have most of the penis. i had to say all that shit just so i can say i don't care about women hitting men, but i fucking snap at men hitting women because of what i've just been going on about. the physical dissimilarities. males tend to be bigger. i'm not saying "it isn't fair because it's a guy against a girl", but come on, in reality, it is unfair. it shouldn't even get to that point anyway. you like to slap around your partner when they're not doing what you want them to do? okay, i'll slap you around because you're not doing what i want you to do. which is act like a civilised human being. i mean the reaction towards the guy i thought was great, you want social outcry and disgust, but the reaction towards the woman hitting the guy and people just laughing and not really being bothered i actually also thought was great. just again, i'm like one of the last people to be sexist or anything, you just really need to look at our separate biology(s). a bloke manhandling a woman isn't right, but turn it the other way where the woman is handing out the punishment and i think it becomes more of a "oh god mom is trying to hit me again what have i done wrong this time duck and cover". which is okay. and i don't want that to sound condescending or anything either because it isn't meant to be, it's meant to be all about control. if we were just mindless automatons we might react violently towards a partner hitting you with a bread stick, but we have something called self-control. we don't just impulsively act, we think and can take shit for days/months/years before it becomes a psychological stress. we still can act impulsively, the difference is deciding not to. if you decide to act like a cunt towards other people, be prepared to have everyone else treat you likewise. and let's be fair; that goes for both the ladies and the gents. |
Yeah, the biological argument for gender roles gets less credible every month. African-American people are generally bigger than people of Asian descent - doesn't justify a bunch of Asians beating up a black guy. If someone is being abused, they are the victim and they deserve help. And that's that.
The bottom line is that highlighting the hypocrises present in progressive society (in theory) makes that society stronger for everyone. Awareness is not a zero-sum game; the 40% deserve a fair shout, because it makes it a lot easier for them to stand in solidarity with the 60%. I mean, imagine if the man in the street took male rape victims seriously. Yeah, they're a minority, but they've got privelige. Rape convictions would skyrocket if people believed this was something that happened to handsome white men, and not just drunken women looking for trouble. (Of course, the eventual goal is that people are self-aware enough not to ignore people they don't identify with, but we need to work with what we've got.) |
Also, man, I've seen many Neil DeGrasse Tyson videos but for some reason that UFO one really made me regret dropping my interest in Astronomy in my early teens. I think I'm actually going to join a local Club or something.

i'm not advocating abuse, i'm saying "if you are physically bigger than someone, you should probably be more careful" which is common sense. like i've been saying. common sense. civility. so why am i being given the fucking third degree with an Asian/African-American argument? i wasn't saying that at all. :
fuck that. i'm just trying to be a realist. if you are physically bigger than another organism, and you're not a nice person, you will bully and take and do whatever the fuck you like with that organism because who's going to stop you? and believe me, it's shit just like that that causes a lot of domestic disputes between partners, and yeah, they almost always end up being a woman under threat of violence from their 'loving' male partner. honestly, there's almost an 'underground' element to it where people seem to grow up surrounded by terrible, violent parents and parenting so that it becomes the norm and women are treated like second class citizens, so when they find a partner they'll do exactly the fucking same. like animals. and yes, this is in England. it goes on absolutely everywhere, and it needs to be stamped out, and the biggest perpetrator seems to be the males. the stats show it. that's allllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll i was saying motherfucker. you're more paranoid than me. seriously. the entirety of this reply is just basically saying "i didn't say/mean that". |
Because you seemed to interpret me mentioning an issue as me wanting it to preclude other issues - which is dangerously widespread assumption in itself.
Like I said: Awareness is not a zero-sum game. :
|
yeah right okay i was saying it's fine to beat the shit out of someone so long as you're not bigger than them. that's, like, so obviously exactly what i was saying. fucking whatever.

Remember, folks: Ideas are like diseases. The stronger they are, the more they spread. And the only way to make them stronger is by relentlessly picking at them until they're forced to adapt.
In other words, I make a point of disagreeing with aspects of things I mainly agree with. |
OANST's opinion of welfare is still bullshit though.
|
Amen to that.

Except that I never actually offered an opinion on it. I offered an opinion on your hyperbole, and put out there that there are actually points to be made on the other side of it. I said from the beginning that what they were doing is wrong. But denying the validity of all of their points just on the principle that you hate them, and that the solution they came up with doesn't work, or actually speak to all the problems, does no one any good. It was you that decided that my opinion was right wing jibberish, and yes, my opinion was colored by the way things work here, assuming that the British unemployment problem couldn't be too dissimilar to the Detroit area's problem. Which may have been a mistake on my part.

So this was released after a countdown clock on the TF2 Site.
Team Fortress 2 Short Movie. And it's one of the best things Valve have ever produced. |
It was surprisingly good. I've always enjoyed the TF2 videos, but this takes the bread.
