Well I made it anyway :P, I hope this doesn't count as triple posting I don't know how to edit and upload, if that's even possible?

Lord Stanley 10-23-2010 05:34 PM

This project is awesome.

Parappa 10-24-2010 02:47 AM

Hi, i have extracted models from the xbox version.. can you use them for the remake?? =D

nowtun 10-24-2010 03:18 AM

i could possibly use them as referense, im trying not to use any of OWI's own objects as I dont realy wanna risk any legal stuff with OWI. I feel like im risking it enough by just remaking the game.

thanks for the help tho

D0n't worry Nowtun, I dug out a lot of copyright stuff last year that protects game makers, you won't get in trouble for this.

Jords001 10-24-2010 03:29 AM

It's true he did. They're in .kf and .NIF formats there are also wav files which I presume are coded using XBADPCM I unfortunately can't play them. There is also a tonne of .dds textures as well. As proof I have saved one as a .jpeg and have attached it :P. You could always use the models if you can as a starting point eg adding more detail to the model so then it's not as much like the model from Munch's Oddysee. You could always ask Lorne Lanning on facebook what's acceptable, he may have an idea.

STM 10-24-2010 03:31 AM

http://www.oddworldforums.net/showth...861#post387861 The link to your left will guide you in your copyright paving.

Jords001 10-24-2010 03:54 AM

It still very much depends on what the actual copyright is and where you live as well though. Because isn't part of it do not reverse engineer this game. (Rigging the models would more than likely be counted.) Although I think that Oddworld being the company that they are, (about the little guy) wouldn't mind, so long as it isn't made for "Ground and mashed into little cakes. Scrabs destroyed for profit sakes." Sorry that came to mind when I was going to say profits sakes. But yeah free fan based game should be all good with them.

nowtun 10-24-2010 05:41 AM

hey thanks for all the info guys, really put my mind at ease :-)
i really dont want lorne and the gang commin down on me like a tonne of bricks, but i guess they wont now as i never planned on selling this... but a job offer would be nice tho lol

STM 10-24-2010 10:56 AM

You could email them? I think I might have the old oddworld email lying around somewhere

nowtun 10-24-2010 11:53 AM

i have their email addresses, i even have an old recomendation off a "Larry Shappiro" but I'm not sure if he's still with them as he only joined OWI in 2007/2008

bigface1 10-24-2010 12:19 PM

DUDE that would be awesome i checked the vids im so excited.

STM 10-24-2010 03:32 PM

hey thanks for taking a look Lorne and Sherry, Ive been trying to show you this for a long time now. hope you like it :-)

I would love to eventually work with you or the guys at JAW

the idea is to make the entire (fan)game in 3D, so far I have... Zulag 1 pretty much completed. next will be Paramonia as it is one of my favourite areas of Oddworld and the area that I first started working on (I've binned many past attempts at this location but its proven to be a great learning experience for me). I have a BA Degree but I'm mostly self tought when it comes to CGI.

Hello

First of all let me tell you that your project is looking great so far.

I've always been a huge fan of oddworld. I played the first two games for the ps1 and, because of changing platform, wasn't able to play the xbox games. Recently, after my degree in advertising, I started to notice that what I really wanted all these years was to be part of the game industry, but in Portugal there is no such thing as an industry to turn to. So I've been trying to develop my skills in the areas I love - modeling, sculpting, etc and started to learn the unity and udk.
The point of all this is to say that I'm trying to, in the next years, create a portfolio that covers the areas of the game industry and I was planning to make a prequel to the abe's oddysee game. Thing is I love the 2D game and was thinking going in that direction. I've had some ideias and I though about starting to write a script with the story and then move on to the development phase. Concept characters, modeling, etc.
It's a not comercial objective, the full purpose is to create a rich portfolio and make something I really love.

I have a few questions I would like to ask you:
What is the game engine you've been using up so far, unity?
Have you learned everything by yourself?
Would you be interested (after finishing your project) in starting something from scratch? (It would be nice for experience to start something from ground zero I supose...)

Well, that's it for now! Keep up the excelent work!

STM 11-15-2010 12:20 PM

Hell yeh Nowtnu where are you, I'm terrified you've given up!

RyuuFox 11-15-2010 12:58 PM

I was thinking about starting a company too xD but now that i think about it you'll need a lot of people, That's why I'm thinking about going to movie business first (3d movies like pixar but serious movies) Then with the team i have i will start a gaming company! and a good thing about it is that i live 2 hours away from the college that does that xD. I also wanted to tell u i downloaded a trial of zbrush and man the possibility u can do in there!

Yes, Zbrush 4 is something big. I've been using version 3.5 and am thinking to upgrade to new version because of some new features for hardsurface modeling (like shadowbox).

It's a hard and time consuming job but the final output make every second worth it.

Also, I would like to add that my main expertise right now is character concept (since my background has always been traditional illustration) and modeling. So if any of those might come in handy for this project, you can count me in.

Hey man, thanks for the coment.

This project is also mainly for portfolio purposes, I didnt really know what to put on a showreel so I just decided to just make oddworld (My original idea was to reconstruct Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus, but I dropped Exoddus as it was far to big a project for one person).

As the project stands, it no longer has a game engine as I lost my programer last month, but we were using Unity engine, Ive had a short play with the engine but concentrated on modeling all the objects as this project eats up a lot of my time.

I learnt the basics of 3D animation in University but I didnt really start to learn the real stuff untill I bought the software myself (Lightwave 9) so I guess I'm pretty much self tought

and yes I would be interested in working on a brand new original project :-)

I lost my patience with Zbrush 2 years ago lol

Just a quick WIP to show you that I'm still working on this.

It shows what the shadows will look like.

Sneaky peak at Paramonia. I havn't placed most of the objects yet.
