Thanks for the tip, I beaned him and then...got really bored during the fight with Time Hunter. Rest of the game was great fun though, pity there aren't any more levels.

AlexFili 03-15-2012 12:33 AM

Tearing Geths apart on Mass Effect 3, doing some squad-based tactics action in Rebelstar Tactical Command for GBA and playing Bejeweled 3 until doomsday.

Sonic Generations is the first Sonic game I have ever bought.

Fun, but I'm stuck on Egg Dragoon, seriously fuck that guy.

Please tell me it's the first you bought and not the first you played...

Crashpunk 03-15-2012 01:55 AM

Does it matter? the first Sonic game I bought and played was Sonic Advanced 2.

Well I played the demo for Sonic Heroes on an Xbox demo disc once.

I’m surprised you recovered in time for Generations.

OANST 03-15-2012 01:45 PM

Can we just rename this the Sonic is Shit thread, and get it over with?

Varrok 03-15-2012 01:54 PM

It's not us who have the moderator rights here

OANST 03-15-2012 01:59 PM

Well, it's not me either. You may have misunderstood how serious my mod title is.

Varrok 03-15-2012 02:14 PM

I thought it was semi-serious. Sucks then.

Just make a new thread about the games. Otherwise more Mods will get mad and we all don't want to see that. :D

Ridg3 03-15-2012 02:19 PM

Whatever you do... don't spam in Necrum, OANST will be all up in your shit.

Mr. Bungle 03-15-2012 02:31 PM

I wish people would leave Sonic alone. Just 'cause there's some (really) shitty games in the series doesn't make it a bad one.

anyone already tried out I Am Alive? I still need to wait for Spring Roll because I got a PS3.

All of the games are shitty.

Mr. Bungle 03-16-2012 11:26 AM

The Genesis ones are great, I don't see anything wrong with them. Really. Just fun, old school platforming.

I was going to but I keep forgetting to try it out. I just feel like I don’t have the time anymore. I still need to play the new Alan Wake game know. :D

No. It's just really fast movement which is not a good enough premise for the game, and the rest of the gameplay just sucks a fat dick.

MeechMunchie 03-16-2012 01:52 PM

I'd like to say that he just doesn't like popular things, but I'm not really one to talk there.

OANST 03-16-2012 02:10 PM

Is Sonic popular?

MeechMunchie 03-16-2012 02:44 PM

Was.

OANST 03-16-2012 02:49 PM

Yeah.

It was never good though. Always shit. Assways.

MeechMunchie 03-16-2012 02:54 PM

2012 - 1989 = 23

30 - 23 = 7

... I bet your parents were stingy.

Oh, I get it. You’ve never played them.

Sure, I did. You run fast, and sometimes jump on shit. It's shit.

Manco 03-16-2012 03:14 PM

Along with every other 2D platformer ever made then?

Sure, I did. You run fast, and sometimes jump on shit. It's shit.

But your forgetting the amazing plot twists in the game.....

:

As Sonic celebrates his birthday with his friends, a mysterious being known as the Time Eater suddenly appears, destroying the party and sucking everyone through various "time holes", scattering them across different places in history.
Well it does beat Super Mario storyline. LOL :D

MeechMunchie 03-16-2012 03:20 PM

The first one was a modern epic. Don't make me tell my story again.

Nope. The good platformers of the time were doing all sorts of new things. Sonic's "new" thing was running fast. And it was shit.

Wings of Fire 03-16-2012 03:36 PM

I liked Sonic. Sonic was fun.

No, actually, Sonic’s thing wasn’t simply “running fast”. The original games were built around the concept of momentum-based movement and platforming. Compare how Sonic moves and jumps from a standstill to how he runs and jumps after building up speed, they’re quite different.

So levels were built around this concept of momentum and inertia. You don’t just jump from platform to platform, you need to build up the momentum to cross a gap that you couldn’t get past from a standstill. To reach higher areas in the level, you need to get the momentum to take off from ramps and gain enough altitude. Hitting an enemy or item box bounces you around, and several elements and obstacles (bumpers, spikes, enemies in your path, pits, fans...) exist to thwart your attempts at building up momentum.

The idea is you use this momentum to reach better paths, get more points and complete levels faster. The problem here is that you do NOT get momentum by just holding right through levels, and speed is not always a good thing. What the classic Sonic games did was create a platformer based around moving through the level environment carefully and fluidly, and that is what gives them a lasting appeal.

e: Here, watch this for a quick demonstration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6PF2VRy878

Mac Sirloin 03-16-2012 03:58 PM

That lasting appeal is slapped sideways when all of your momentum and fluidity means nothing when the levels are built to bring you to a full stop repeatedly, often by smashing an enemy into you, for no reason other than they rarely actually built those levels to be any fun at all.

I have fun playing classic Sonic, but it is a lot of bullshit. Dynamite Heddy was a better game.

Sonic is a a garbage man. Shadow the Hedgehog had a gun and gigantic, fuck-off eyeball doing you favours and shit. Shadow for President.

I'm replaying Bioshock because, I mean, fuckin' Bioshock, you know? Fuckin' Bioshock.

I'm also playing Mass Effect 2. I don't like Miranda or her boobs. I think Miranda and her boobs is a bad character and while I'm sure someone is going to explain how great Miranda and her boobs are, I will not be listening because only Garrus, Mordin or Grunt will be following me until I find more alien buddies.

I'm also just going to check if you can kill off Jack because she's a fucking stupid character.

...

You can't? That's even fucking stupider. I'm glad I bought this used, Bioware. You stinky monkey.

You mean a game which rewards building up momentum and playing well has obstacles which punish not paying attention and just blindly running forward?!

I'll be honest, I didn't read past the first sentence. blah blah momentum blah sonic is shit blah. That's all I read.

So the point is more 'Momentum and superspeed are for specific problem areas and the bulk of the game is traditional platforming'?

Fair enough, explains why I sucked so bad at them. Doesn't excuse Sonic magically flying around in the cartoons but that's my problem.

I'm playing Corpse Party. Sounds like a pretty neat game, right? Pretty Mactastic?

I'm in over my head.

Dynamithix 03-17-2012 01:31 PM

We're playing Machinarium. By we, I mean me and my dad. I haven't played it this far before so it's pretty fun to solve the puzzles together and such. It also has a nice soundtrack. Yeah.

Oh and Deus Ex. I'm wondering if I should start making a Let's play of it. Then again, no one would watch it.

BoneyHead95 03-17-2012 02:59 PM

I'm Playing Metal Gear Solid 4. Somehow I can't sign in my PSN account because of some DNS error. ):

I think it’s more “most of the game is designed to reward momentum and speed but a lot of the obstacles are designed to punish blindly running forward”.

Momentum is not just running forward. Preserving speed and momentum is not just running forward and hoping obstacles magically stay the fuck out of your way.

You guys are still talking about Sonic the faghog....

I for one are going to upgrade my desktop that I got for free to play more video games, I was going to tell you guys but no, I did not feel like telling you.
