That's generous

MeechMunchie 06-13-2013 06:43 AM

The issue with using two points in a 3D portal is that it wouldn't have any breadth unless the tear was bulging outwards, at which point it starts looking like a sort of electric vagina.

This is what I was thinking of, compared to what we seem to have now.

http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/6...pboard01uc.png

It'd look different side-on, of course.

Xavier 06-13-2013 07:12 AM

Great find JennyGenesis, I enjoyed watching this interview :)

Did Lorne just sent the potential new fans to us? That's an "interesting" idea...

I agree that this version of the intro is a bit frightening. It definitely does not look very finished the lightning seems off and the mood has vanished.

About those portals, am I the only one who thinks they should be ovals and not circles?

MeechMunchie 06-13-2013 07:16 AM

It was supposed to be an ellipse, yeah. It should match the vertical aspect of the transportees.

As for the footage:

1) Lorne looks more like Jim Raynor every time I see him
2) I love how Stewart is so dour all the time, especially juxtaposed to Lorne's wide-eyed idealism
3) "The Oddworld fanbase is great, they've got a really unique, passionate perspective on things, you should ask them"
4) Lorne doesn't know any hand gestures besides "big boobs"
5) DID YOU SEE OCTOMAN?!

Jordan 06-13-2013 07:28 AM

I don't really like how the portals fizzle away. I think the animation is too slow and too big, it just looks sort of odd and out of place.

However, I accept that the game is incomplete and I hate to be a nitpicker. I'm just so glad we're getting this and now it feels very real.

Lorne and Stewart always remind me of Mario & Luigi when they're stood next to each other...

OANST 06-13-2013 07:59 AM

Has anyone else noticed that 90 percent of you call 'lighting' 'lightning'?

MeechMunchie 06-13-2013 08:10 AM

I said lightning but I meant lightning. Electricity.

Done.

Can they not just use the damn original? It's so much better, and it really highlights why people think the Abe model looks bad.

The Boardroom is also pretty low quality. Looks early PS2 standard.

Undoubtedly the worst shot in the trailer IMO.

Wil 06-13-2013 08:41 AM

To anyone who claims the only stuff you'll see is the very best stuff that we're proudest to put out, here's proof that that's nonsense. That very early render of the movie was not meant to go public.

The boardroom... you can't even see it. All you can see is the projector screen, most of which hasn't got much projected on it in that brief moment you see it.

Man... Was that Rupture Farms in the background of the very first scene just a flat image? D: Oh god.

Of course it was. An environment that complicated in 3D, when all you're going to see is a flat pan for a couple of seconds? We'd have to scrap Paramonia if you wanted that.

It's staying like that? Wow.

As the establishing shot of the game it kinda immediately ruins your suspension of disbelief. This is cardboard cut-out Farms, the lowest budget meat processing plant on Oddworld.

Wil 06-13-2013 09:25 AM

I literally just said it was an early render.

Your comment implied that the shot of Rupture Farms would be staying flat and 2D?

Wil 06-13-2013 09:36 AM

It's staying a matte painting, yes. Just like it was in the original, just like there have been mattes in every Oddworld game.

That’s not to say they won’t be adding other effects to better blend the matte in with the 3D.

This is what most devs do when a big event is coming up. They crunch down and get something done to show the progress made so far. Lorne himself said that before E3, he thought sony wasnt going to invite him until almost last minute. Regardless, things will need touching up and this is still very early development. Quick question though, how long did the original game take to make back in the day?

anyways, thanks for putting up with our criticism Wil. Its good to know a company that doesn't ignore its fans.

Nepsotic 06-13-2013 10:03 AM

As long as the lighting is fixed, then fine. I think in the end the cutscenes will look good, but lighting seems to be an issue, a big one. Even if the lighting is a tiny bit off, BAM! Mood spoiled. It's pretty sad because a lot of the gameplay shota I've seen have been excellently lit (besides Scrabania). Also Abe's face desperately needs fixing, it's pretty damn bad.
These (and the portals) are the only graphical issues I can see, everything else seems to be due to rushing, and can be sorted easily.
Also the colour palette.

They started development in January 1995, according to the Art of Oddworld, and the game was released in September 1997. So roughly two and a half years, I reckon.

Nepsotic 06-13-2013 10:23 AM

And then they made Exoddus in under a year, and it was twice as long.

The portals are pretty much my only complaint, which is exactly why I'm complaining about them so much.

leocrow 06-13-2013 10:38 AM

What I missed in the new demo intro is the "...and help me rescue the others" line that was at the end of the demo I used to have before getting the real thing. I always hoped that if the game was remade, this line could return, the intro seems incomplete without it!

By the way Will, IF you guys release this on android as well, could you make sure that it also works on android x86 as well? I hope that's not too much to ask

Nepsotic 06-13-2013 10:46 AM

Low-Mid range Android devices have no chance of running it, high probably don't, either.
That line was cut for a reason, Abe doesn't know he has to rescue the others yet, and it would brake the fourth wall too much.

Yeah, that can happen when you use the same engine, the same characters, have already worked out your process, and then further streamline said process by devising a framework of reusable art assets.

JennyGenesis 06-13-2013 12:18 PM

Well I kinda thought that the intro was unfinished, but for the moment, I just thought it looked bad, bit unusual for unfinished parts to be shown off, but as it was stated, being put up on E3 was unexpected so I suppose that JAW were naturally unprepared.

leocrow 06-13-2013 12:21 PM

Stewart and Lorne now live: http://www.twitch.tv/gamespot#/w/5874536288

OANST 06-13-2013 12:30 PM

I've concluded that there were nowhere near enough bullies where most of you grew up. A lot of you could really use having the shit beaten out of you from time to time. Just to put things in perspective.

Varrok 06-13-2013 12:45 PM

And how would that make NnT more finished?

No, I know that, but it's still pretty impressive.

DarkHoodness 06-13-2013 12:53 PM

@OANST - People just want that the remake is being done "correctly", but that being said, people's definition of "correct" differs for each person, and there's a fine line between nitpicking and constructive criticism...

I may be guilty of that as well, but I'm glad the remake is being done at all - The areas of the game they've shown which have been finished really do look stunningly incredible. If most people are only nitpicking the bird portals, partially unimplemented lighting and an unfinished intro sequence, it's a sign that JAW are doing a very decent job.

OANST 06-13-2013 01:11 PM

It wouldn't. That's something that I don't care about. Watching people that I talk to a lot turn into rabid, sweaty titted nerds is kind of annoying though.

It's like the Mass Effect 3 ending, only worse. At least that was a finished product for people to fag out over.

Varrok 06-13-2013 01:23 PM

Not as annoying as people who blindly accept and embrace everything, despite if it's good or bad. Besides, it's Oddworld Discussion forum, we're supposed to be like that here.
