The music isn't terrible. The only reason i cannot see it fitting is because it is lyrical, and Oddworld has never had any lyrical music content before. The emotion of the song fits the story well, kinda. I think everyone would think it suited more if they used the instrumental for this song. The mechanical sounds fit the industrial theme and the piano and other instruments suit the emotions that the story of Abe's Oddysee portray. I think that this song could mean quite a lot to the creators of New 'n' Tasty too, telling us viewers about how they have loved Oddworld from the start and the motivation they have had to recreate this masterpiece of a game. It also adds a shock factor for the audience to hear someone singing, getting people hyped up and talking about the game more. This is my two cents anyway, everyone has their own opinion :)
|
It's not the fact that it has lyrics, it's just the style in general.

Note: I've completely gotten over the logo and I don't care about the music seeing as it's just a trailer, but it doesn't mean I won't argue when people say stupid shit. It's still a shitty logo. |
New Paramonia comparison looks amazing; the temples are a 100% success !
I object to it being in the credits, not the trailer. I don't want to finish the journey with a rock song and I'm concerned that this decision seemed appropriate to someone. |
Probably Lorne. We should just blame him for all the issues.
|
The inclusion of the song in the end credits is the only thing that bothers me too. For a trailer it doesn't matter. A fan gets her (very good) song used by OWI in promotional material, and the actual trailer itself was fine too.
But yeah, just seems like it will be out of place in the credits. After all the tension in the end cutscene, and the sacred temple where all the mudokons are celebrating Abe, I think it will be jarring to switch to this particular song. The original ended with the same music it opened with, causing it to be just as mysterious as when the game is initially turned on. I get there must be changes, but this song would suit something like the Stranger's Wrath credits far more than Oddysee's, if it had to be in anything. That's my take anyways :) Still, massively excited for what's coming over the following days!!!! |
Can I just let this be known real quick, for Stewart and Alex and JAW;
When I was a little boy (with quite geeky dreams), I played AO and it blew me away. It created a lifelong pursuit of creative work. As I said earlier, I work in games development and animation now as a very direct result of AO. I often used to dream someday of a Playstation with inifinite power that could create a photo real AO so I could really get inside the wonderful environments and feel the cold air of the stockyards or the sun in the desert. This is the power of AO. JAW have brought my dreams true. I am a fully grown man with a home, girlfriend, car etc. Nothing excites me more in the past year and a half than thinking of playing this new game and finally fulfilling a powerful childhood wish. (and really, childhood wishes, whatever they may be, are the most powerful of all). Thank you JAW for making this possible, and please understand the immense creative weight and importance of this universe to (many) people like me. Hence why we feel that including this song is a particular travesty, if you must know. It may even be said it bursts a bubble that was created 15 years ago. I'll say it one last time and then be quiet; please remove it. Other than that, I am very very happy with what is happening. |
Same thing for me! This has been my favourite game since childhood and i would still rather play the Oddworld Series rather than GTA, CoD, and all that other crap. The story of Abe has actually helped me throughout my life because like him, in reality i AM the small skinny guy who has a lot of problems, and the story is about standing up to the big guy, which is why 2 years ago i drew a tribal version of the Oddworld Inhabitants Logo and had it tattooed on my back. Without Oddworld, i wouldn't be as confident and emotionally strong as i am today. So thank you Lorne, for being an amazing artist and storyteller who has had a massive impact on not only my life, but many others. And thankyou JAW for letting me Relive my childhood in the hopes that one day i can share this mindblowing story with my children :)

GTA is awesome.
|
Holy shit, Nepsotic said he liked something.
|
I only like what Oddworld fans dislike.
|
Speaking of the song again. I really liked it, even if not in context. Does anyone know where I could download or purchase the song?
|

Well shit. I'm away for 2 days and a new trailer comes out...
(Prepare for a long post, which will be repeating in a upcoming video.) Okay. First things first the Music. I liked the song. She was a beautiful singer and the fact she is a Oddworld fan is a massive honor, which is really nice to hear about. However I do agree that it didn't really fit the trailer. It did make the whole thing very emotional sure, as if it was directed at Abe. But it didn't relate anything! (Anything I wrote on YouTube about the music fitting the theme, yeeeah no I've changed my mind) The new scenes. I'm a bit gutted they changed Rupture Farms if I'm honest. I try to avoid nitpicking little things but this to me is a huge deal. As much as I like the design (as a design), I don't think it fits what Rupture Farms is. A dirty, polluted, unhygienic hell hole. Heath & Safety worst nightmare. This looks too clean, modern and... well not a meat processing plant. I fucking adore the imaginary of the Scrab and Paramite ghosts, best new thing they've added by far. It really fits Abe's Oddysee and makes you feel even more sorry for the creatures that are being killed at Rupture Farms. Mixing that with the older scenes will be perfect. :( The boardroom looks good, Mollock looks great and the image of Lulu took me my surprise. Perhaps a bit of foreshadowing to a future Oddworld game? Or I'm I looking too much into it again? (probably the latter, I'm good at doing that.) What I noticed a lot in this trailer is that the particles that work with the lighting are looking bloody fantastic. The scene where Mollock is electrocuted, the Mudokons chanting and the lighting from the signs looks bright and mesmerizing. Adding the masks to the native Mudokons is a small thing, but I think it works well. Plus it relates to how Big Face has one. And finally. The logo. Yeaaaah the logo. It's not going to be changed, It never was. But I always had that little glimmer of hope that they tweaked it a bit. And that's that. It's great to see the game is finally at it's final stages. Won't be long to play my most anticipated game ever! :
|
I actually really love the remade scene of Abe running into the Monsaic Lines, it looks so much more grand and epic.
Crashpunk, it looks like whenever you criticize Oddworld or JAW you were crying apologetically as you wrote the post. |

That trailer was great, but the song choice was really weird.

Also, I'm insanely bothered that the very first thing introduced in the game has been changed so significantly? Just visually the original and the new version are so drastically different, it's going to have an impact of the overall tone of the game and how the story's executed. This wouldn't be a problem if it weren't a remake of the first game in the series. I don't care if this "fits the original vision better" or not. The game and story of AO were presented a certain way. It was published. Completely changing it after it's been out there for well over a decade is like punching everyone who ever fell in love with the original team's work and how it was portrayed right in the genitals and twisting your fist a little to add additional injury. You can still progress a story into the direction you initially wanted to go and people will be able to ease into that pretty well?? Why would you completely change how a story started like that???????? The story told might be the same, but the way it's told can have a huge impact on people YOU KNOW :
|
Bit of an overreaction, no? I mean I'd get what your saying if the whole aesthetic of the game had been changed dramatically but Rupture Farms? I dunno.

Great trailer! New elements look nice and the redesigned RF, albeit different, looks undeniably Oddworldian. Good news to hear Raymond Swanland is back :D
The series always had an unusual stance with regards to technology. Bonewerkz and FeeCo. had Victorian stylings, set against futuristic teleporters and robots (shrink, greeter) for example. Even then though, the futuristic elements fitted aesthetically with the older style, almost like experimental and dangerous prototypes built from salvaged pipes and other materials. To me, Oddworld never really felt sci-fi. If anything, technological aspects seemed more like the insane machinations of mad scientists than the products of giant corporations- precarious and unnerving. The teleporters felt like they were as likely to malfunction and kill you, as actually work. The new RF looks like it's moved out of the prototype stage, and uses more completed 'off the shelf' products and equipment. I suppose this makes more sense in-lore given the consumer culture. It still looks old, gritty and grimy, but has an extra veneer of functionality. Perhaps not as dark and deadly to me, but very oppressive and corporate. Not complaining at all, just commenting on what I feel the differences are :) I do personally prefer the darker visuals of the original, but New n Tasty is looking fantastic either way, and very atmospheric. |

AO is a different story though, considering it's not only the first installment of the series ever, but has already rooted itself in deep, tone and all. The game is being uprooted and moved to a different location. That location may have been where Lorne originally wanted it to go, but it established itself so well where it already was it might actually hurt the game in the process. Yes, I said hurt. Fans have already been established, the stories already been kicked off, retcons are annoying. Some times you have to ignore the original vision if the product still came out beautiful. From what I've seen of the marketing for the game (which is all obviously intentional and we can all agree doesn't work very well), and massive revamps like Rupture Farms' design, I can safely say if this was the AO that had come out all those years ago I wouldn't have fallen in love with it the way that I did. All that's left to do now is wait til the game's released and actually play it, and hope that none of these things that are bothering me right now actually have any impact on the game. It's a remake of AO, it should feel and flow like AO. Otherwise, it may as well have just been a different game. :
I specifically stated, Rupture Farms is the very first thing introduced in the game. It sets the tone immediately. You know exactly what this game to feel like. The story is up front and in your face and it's introduced in a way that gets across the misery and how heavy the story is meant to be. Visually, everything looks industrialized to the point where you know it's a problem. The building itself didn't look like it was very well taken care of, and if it was, it was an old building. Revamping something as seemingly 'minor' as Rupture Farms to be smooth, sleek, clean and so openly colourful right off the bat gives off a completely different vibe, even if you were to lay the exact same audio over top. Rupture Farms' design is much more important to the overall picture than you seem to give it credit, and I know JAW and OWI and whoever the fuck else worked on it know this as well, as it was obviously a deliberate choice. |
Except it's not AO. It's a retelling of an existing story. Think about the story of Jason, son of Aeson. An epic that has been told a hundred times and although the story changes every time, you still know it's basically about 'Jason and the Argonauts'.
|
I know it's not fucking AO, but it was an announced as an HD remake of it, elaborated there were going to be changes in the mechanics and a few tweaks here and there, but would overall still be AO. Same environments same story in the same universe and everything.
/insert more complaining about RF and how much I don't like how it can change the tone of the entire fucking game |
Well, I dunno. Surely a relatively pristine corporate structure surrounded by the misery of industrial production and smog sets a pretty strong tone for the game. The ego of glukkons and the destructive means they use to satiate it.
|
I didn't say it didn't set a pretty strong tone, but it's a completely different tone than it used to be.
I can't judge until I actually play it, but unless they do things JUST RIGHT, this is just going to feel like another over the top sci fi action/adventure story. |
:
Yes, the remake is different. There wouldn't be any point in it existing if it wasn't. I've yet to see any compelling argument that it's going to be definitively worse. |
Compared to the rest of the games, I honestly think AO was a fluke. Is that a good enough reason to say it's likely to be worse?
It doesn't even matter. It will feel worse anyway. Because it's not AO. Because it won't be as special as AO. After this thread I honestly have no desire to ever open OD again. I dread to think about the state of this place once the game is actually released. |
:
Definitely. Really, I'm just complaining because I think the first game did what it was supposed to do so masterfully, that any "unnecessary" changes that stand out so much make me all kinds of upset because no why would you do that I'm also all bothered because they might change the flow of the crouching animation even though it is THE EMBODIMENT OF PERFECTION. Also, eh, I'm not necessarily saying it's going to be objectively worse, but it seems like it will be objectively boring. Like, "I've seen this before, and not just when I played the original" kind of boring. Sure, it's going to look all nice and shiny and pretty but... it's not going to have the same kind of impact on people that AO would based on presentation alone. :
