That's such a dumb arbitary distinction 'It works' and 'It's cheap'

Zeta Gundam and Victory Gundam both had an amazingly high death count, not one of those deaths felt cheap to me so who is he to say where there's a line?

Strike Witch 08-26-2010 08:20 AM

He's an author, it's what he personally feels, moron.

"lol dumb shonens"

Wings of Fire 08-26-2010 08:29 AM

Eh, the impression I got from reading that remark is it's more of a 'lol I'm better than other writers'

Strike Witch 08-26-2010 08:32 AM

It's a misinterpretation, plus even if that is so, is the work lesser because of the opinions of the artist?

And take Franky's story:

:

Franky's real name is Cutty Flam (カティ・フラム, Kati Furamu). He was born in the South Blue. When he was young his parents (who are thought to have been pirates) threw him off their ship into the ocean. He was then rescued by a legendary shipwright named Tom. Tom took Cutty Flam in as his apprentice. Tom's other apprentice Iceburg then gave Cutty Flam the nickname "Franky" because "Cutty Flam is a weird name". Franky learned shipbuilding from Tom, but spent most of his time constructing warships designed to hunt and defeat Sea Kings, each one named "Battle Franky" with a number corresponding to the order of construction.

When Franky was 12, Tom was put on trial for having built the ship that Gol D. Roger sailed the Grand Line on. Tom was let off for ten years so he could finish building the Puffing Tom, a train that could sail the ocean. After fourteen years had passed (ten to build the train and the first line, four more to build the other three lines the train uses), the Marines were going to let Tom off as thanks for creating the train.

However, he was framed by CP5's current leader, Spandam, who was after the blueprints for the ancient weapon Pluton, which had been handed down to Tom through the shipwrights of Water 7. Spandam used the warships that Franky had built to fight the Sea Kings to attack Water 7, and although Tom and his apprentices stopped the attack, it appeared to everyone that they had been the ones attacking. As a result, Tom was sentenced to death. Franky then tried to protect Tom, and stood in front of the Puffing Tom , which was taking Tom away. When he was run down by the train, his body was badly injured; he was presumed dead.

He managed to fix himself with spare parts from an abandoned ship and had "BF 36" tattooed on his shoulders, making himself the 36th "Battle Franky". Four years after his disappearance, he went to see Iceburg and was outraged to find that he had allied himself with the World Government. The two argued, but Iceburg gave Franky the Pluton's blueprints and also was driven to tears over seeing Franky was still alive.
He can use death effectively.

Of course not, I started this argument with no hand and now I'm basically trolling.

I still think smaller stories are better though, Kanon is my personal favourite thng ever because there's no superfluousity in it at all. Even every line of narration has a double meaning.

Strike Witch 08-26-2010 08:39 AM

Sure, but we were talking about Summer Wars and One Piece.

Robin: The ruins you destroyed are priceless, and even though history is always being created... Men cannot return to the past. Do you understand!?

Yama: I... I understand, I won't... Do that again... Forgive me...

Robin: No.

Seriously, One Piece is a story of humanity that grows out of mere shonen pretty early on. It's the greatest thing ever.

Wings of Fire 08-26-2010 08:41 AM

Eh.

I just don't have the commitment for another long runner.

I had to lie to you about Summer Wars to make you watch it.

Strike Witch 08-26-2010 05:53 PM

Sucks to be you, I read the wiki summary before watching so I knew she died lol

Wings of Fire 08-26-2010 05:56 PM

I don't spoil plots for myself, it indeed sucks to be me.

Dyke dyke dyke

The Crappin' Elum 08-27-2010 12:10 AM

I'll make a list:
-Full Metal Alchemist (both Fraternity and Philosopher Stone)
-Death Note(Man..that Misa is hot, and the story is very good)
-Naruto(Meh.....)
-Honey and Clover(sometimes boring sometimes good)
-Afro Samurai(Hm,brings something new to this genre)
-Blood+ (a very weird yet watchable anime)
-Trigun(Really funny and enjoyable)
That's all i can think of..

Anyone looking forward to anything this upcoming fall season?

Only thing I am really looking forward to is Bakuman because the manga was entertaining. But it's going to be weird seeing the beginning of the story when the characters are like kids and whatnot considering I'm now used to where the manga is and they are all adults and whatnot.

Everything else looked pretty bland or cliche or stupid to me. Although I might try a few shows out to see if there are any gems this season that had bad plot synopsis written for them.

Wings of Fire 08-29-2010 07:33 PM

I'm so out of the recent anime loop that I don't know where to go for next season information.

Strike Witch tells me there'll be an anime adaption of The World God Only Knows though, I'll have to check that out.

crimsonxking 08-29-2010 07:38 PM

That manga gave me a few chuckles at first, but it quickly fell into a formula of meh and got a bit too silly and shounen-y for me. I'm happy it got an anime but I'm not really interested in the anime.

I haven't really been watching any anime lately either. None of it is appealing to me at all. I think the only show I have watched this entire year so far has been Angel Beats, and I watched that more on the principle of it being Jun Maeda than anything else.

I'm kinda disenchanted with anime as a whole right now, and I have been trying to get into more manga lately and waiting for some Visual Novel translations to replace it. But, I'm still looking forward to Bakuman a lot.

Wings of Fire 08-29-2010 07:43 PM

I kinda liked Angel Beats!, although the pacing was all off for an anime.

Second half was piles and piles better though.

crimsonxking 08-29-2010 07:50 PM

Angel Beats was alright. Not really as good as I was expecting it to be, though. Actually, it was a completely different kind of show than what I was expecting it to be. I was expecting it to be a lot darker and desperate than it was and without things like rock concerts and hijinks that the characters get into. But it was still a good show for what it was, and yeah, the second half was way better.

But you know what we need right now?

A movie based on Planetarian.

Wings of Fire 08-29-2010 08:07 PM

Haven't completed don't spoil.

I'm still holding out for a Little Busters anime, and a Rewrite anime in a year or two after it gets released as the screenplay was partly written by fricking Ryukishi07.

crimsonxking 08-29-2010 08:24 PM

I never spoil anything without putting them in spoiler tags, so you'll not have to worry about that with me. But Planetarian is only like 3-4 hours long. You should go finish it. I enjoyed it a lot more by reading the whole thing in one go.

I'm just holding out for the Little Busters translation patch. I'd also watch a Rewrite anime as long as it isn't done by Studio Deen.

Wings of Fire 08-29-2010 08:46 PM

Well KEY = KyoAni so we're okay there as far as quality is concerned.

crimsonxking 08-29-2010 08:56 PM

That's not some kind of exclusive deal or anything, though. Nobody has licensed it yet so it's possible someone else may want to take it and is allowed to do so.

Especially since KyoAni would rather make 38 episodes of something like K-ON instead.

i watched:
the whole naruto + specials.
naruto shippuuden till ep 61 or something.
DMC (yeah it rocked) first 3 episodes.
i am not really that much into anime/manga, yeah it's just too......unreal, yeah it can be cool, it can be sexy, it can be cute, but that won't change my opinion, i prefer more gorey and bloody realistic stuff like prison break, that tv show is just awesome.

I see stuff like this said a lot. You say anime is too unreal and not realistic enough but then you say that you have seen stuff like Naruto. Of course that isn't realistic, it isn't supposed to be. Naruto is targeted towards kids and young teens. But that doesn't mean all anime is like that. You just have to know what you should be looking into.

There are a lot of shows and movies that are realistic. Be them shows set in a world that might as well be our own that are very human and realistic or even shows that have unrealistic or fantasy elements but don't get silly or childish.

I'd suggest you try looking and seeing if you like some stuff in a few other genres. Try a few episodes of the series Monster. It's about a doctor unraveling the mystery of a serial killer whose life he once saved. If that's too slow-paced for you, try the movie Perfect Blue. Perfect Blue is pretty trippy at times and seems like it's fantasy but it actually winds up being really realistic and dark (just psychological).

There is a lot of other stuff you might like out there, but I'll leave it at that for now.

abe619 08-30-2010 02:29 PM

thx, that helped.
maybe i'll watch anime again after all now.

No problem. If you wind up liking or even not liking either of those things, and/but want to try something else of a similar or even different genre, feel free to ask for help.

Wings of Fire 08-31-2010 04:19 AM

So uh.

Clannad After Story episode 16/end of Birth Chapter.

Holy shit

crimsonxking 08-31-2010 08:41 AM

Clannad After Story made me cry like a baby.

But you aren't even at the part where it did that yet.

Wings of Fire 08-31-2010 09:21 AM

I'm up to the return of Ayu Fuuko.

crimsonxking 08-31-2010 09:34 AM

I speak of Episode 18 and Episode 21.

Both of them, but 21 moreso.

Wings of Fire 08-31-2010 09:43 AM

I've already done the episode 18 equivalent in the vn I'm pretty sure.

That scene right? It got me but not nearly as much as Nagisa's death via childbirth in episode 16 did.

crimsonxking 08-31-2010 09:50 AM

Yeah. But not just that, the scene before it about his father too. They made me like tear up a lot in context of the show.

But Episode 21 is the big one.

I didn't read the After Story part of the visual novel until I was done with the show, so it was all fresh for me.

Wings of Fire 09-07-2010 10:23 PM

Bit slow, but I finished Clannad and I love it to bits.

The only Anime that I can tolerate is Bleach, but I've only seen a couple of these shows. I hate the jerky animation in general.

used:) 09-15-2010 05:28 PM

I swear to Jesus, the creators of Bleach are sucking Satan's cock.

I haven't seen much anime in a while. I do hope to someday finish seeing all of Miyazaki's work, see the gundam shiz Joe has recommended to me several times, more Satoshi Kon films, and finish Pokemon Adventures.

I also intend to take some time at some point and watch all of my favorite animes I've seen over the years.
