:

The males design has a rough female touch because of the round female eyes and the full lips. Their face look so smooth.

I tried to give him sort of a Marylin Manson look. He's like Stranger in that he prefers solitude, but he gives off more of a creepy vibe, while Stranger is more intimidating.

:

Why does Actra ha such a tight hair cut?
Because I looked at her last design, and hated her hairstyle. I don't feel I'm ready for complex Gothic hairstyles, and it just seemed to fit. She's not as "wild and crazy" as I originally intended anymore, she's much more reserved and quiet, but soon comes into her own.

:

Why don't you try out other hair styles to look if this current style is the perfect one, which is the typical Actra style?
That's a good idea, but I've kind of grown attached to this one. It fits her demenor.

:

I hope I'm not the asshole because of my critique today but I'm not perfect too and I just want to give you some advices.
Dude, I'm not going to get mad because you gave me some pointers. You don't need to walk on eggshells here. I know I need improvement, and any tips I get I'm gratefull for.

Thank you for helping me improve. :)

You're welcome!

That's great :) Thanks for the answers. Now I know much more and understand what you meant.
Does Actra still wears the old clothes or did you give her a new style of clothing?

Can't wait to see more of your drawings.

If by "Still," you mean "Have you changed it?" And no, her wardrobe hasn't changed. But as I've said, I'm not concentrating on Actra as much as I was before.

Matt, go to my Artwork topic, there is a gift for you ;)

The unfinished torso of Natasha Von Toxin, a female member of Altus' species. She's a mercenary who runs a gang called the BugThugs. Their emblem is a red circle with a sillhouette of a muscular, flexed arm that's segmented.

Leto 03-08-2006 07:32 PM

I like the latest head of the Altus female as opposed to the previous ones. More buglike, and more to an ominous theme.

No, no, my friend. Natasha is an entirely new character. The previous female insect is named (as of today) Kyara Pace (a play on the word "carapace." CORNY).

Some of the other insect characters:

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...ckjaw_Face.jpg
A member of the BugThugs, Jim Lockjaw. He's got a body that looks like a mix of a millipede and a scorpion, and the head was inspired by a viperfish. His teeth are all individual mandibles, and can move independently.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...abyTChiton.jpg
An unedited picture of a character named Barnaby T. (Thaddeous) Chiton. He's the head of an unnamed museum where Altus (who's name is now Altus Boon) makes his appearance and enlists the aid of Kyara. He's an expert on almost every subspecies of the insect people, and is beginning to study thought-to-be-extinct species like the procerocruidae (Altus and Natasha's species; "Pro-Seero-Croo-ih-day").

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...onBertsley.jpg
Another member of the BugThugs, Keaton Bertsley. I named him Keaton after Michael Keaton, who played Beetlejuce, and it just seemed to fit. He's a species that has evolved very littile since the prehistoric times, and retains a pair of external mandibles (a physical trait that was lost in time when the insects developed ways to hunt without them).

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...nding-Male.jpg
A male version of Kyara's species, which is named "tereviridae" (Ter-ih-vyro-day). He needs legs, arms, and a stinger still.

Sweet! I love these insects to pieces.

And I thought that bulbous sting thing (sorry, I don't know the names in insect anatomy) on the female insect was really cool. Kudos! :D

Dipstikk 03-08-2006 08:42 PM

Thanks! I'm giving them western-style clothing, so that should be fun to do.

Just to let you know, the final body segment on Kyara (the bulbus stingy thing) is her abdomen, inspired by wasp abdomens.

Biggy Bro Slig 03-09-2006 12:11 AM

They're worthy enough to go in the Art of Oddworld!

Dipstikk 03-10-2006 08:00 PM

No they're not.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...raPacecopy.jpg
Kyara Pace's color scheme. I'm thinking of doing an alternate one, coloring her like a green wasp.

Oh, and I finally got my Wacom tablet to work. Yay! Now it doesn't take me 2 days to color stuff!

Paramite Mask 03-10-2006 08:07 PM

Wow, these are really cool!:) Great job Dipstikk! Hey, wait a minute, did I see your stuff on Oddworld Universe? You're stuff has what excactly what I love: surreal. This is great man, Actra's awesome. I bow down to you, oh master of surreality. Surrealists unite!

ZOMG! You know I am a suckler for that western stuff in this day and age. ;)

Thanks for filling me in on the abdomin. I look foward to seeing more of this insect art.

Leto 03-10-2006 09:38 PM

Nice blending of the yellow to the black. Gets almost a fleshy insect look.

Dipstikk 03-11-2006 01:01 AM

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...KiaraPace2.jpg

Yeah, this is how the second color scheme came out. I'm not as happy with this as I was with the orange and black version.

But I've already got the color guide layed out, so I could probably just mess around with some other pictures of her, and try out different color schemes.

Sweet. I love how you are modeling these insects off insects in our own world (are you?). I did something like that for Tales of Ydian.

I am lovin Lockjaw!

CarboN 03-23-2006 11:19 AM

I can't help not to think that she reminds me of something. Hmm. Nah, maybe it's just that the magnificent hands and legs of the male insect have blurred my mind and eyesight. Actually the entire male bug.

Why doesn't the female bug have as cool fingers as the male bug?
And how does the male work with those? They're not very nimble, I assume.
...I must say, the boobs and lips on those insects are... scary, at least.
Um. Boobiness... how.. lactating indeed.
Their evolution must have been rather interesting. : D
What do they do with the fangy paddles on their hands?
I love the jaw -thing with the bugs. I like the mouth picture.
The layery belly and neck are very attracting.

Hmm, how does Mr. Lockjaw balance himself?

More external mandibles! More! ! :0~

Arr, you done good. You have the talent, young one. Use the force wisely.
*retracts my lightsaber, bows and walks away.*

Munch's Master 03-23-2006 12:26 PM

Dipstikk, your art is getting better and better. It's so creative and just, great. The way you've taken elemnets of real insects and woven them into the design of these characters is real good, and they all look like they could easily fit into Oddworld. That Lockjaw character is amazing, as is Altus' design. I'd go with the first colour scheme for Kyara personally, but it's up to you. I can't really fault anything, I merely have observations on Kyara that her breasts are rather large, possibly overlarge (Though again up to you on your designs for her). Anyway, this is great artwork Dipstikk, imaginative and inspiring!

Dipstikk 04-04-2006 03:13 AM

The reason it's taken me this long to respond is because this seems more like a "free for all, tear it apart" session, and I didn't know how to respond. I don't want to sound ungreatful, but maybe if you gave tips on how to change something in your critique, it'd seem more welcoming.

:

Kyara's a different species than Altus.

:

I'm sure he manages just fine. He's quite nimble.

:

...I must say, the boobs and lips on those insects are... scary, at least.
Um. Boobiness... how.. lactating indeed.

I'm really tired of people bringing up the fact that they have breasts. It's not you I'm annoyed with, it's these tightwad elitist bastiches at the Penny Arcade forums (why, oh WHY did I sign up there?). But I told them the same thing: The breasts are part of the design, and I'm not changing it. Who's to say it couldn't happen? The biologocal laws of Earth don't exactly apply on Oddworld either.

:

What do they do with the fangy paddles on their hands?

What, you mean the claws on Altus' fingers? He uses them to climb walls.

:

Hmm, how does Mr. Lockjaw balance himself?

Bad planning on my part. I meant to make the claws level to the ground.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...aranewHead.jpg
Kyara's new face. I made her a bit nerdy, since she's an ArchaeoPaleontologist and all.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...ikk2/Lense.jpg
A self-described "Futurama-esque" advertisement I did for Kyara's glasses just for kicks.

Hard to know how people want others to react with their art. Usually offering different methods or changes to someone's art is considered rude, that's why I restrain myself from doing it (not that there were anything to change, really).

:

Ah, yes, I see. I just got a little confused who's who.

It's totally fine that they've got breasts. And no, you should definately not change your characters in any way just because some people find it weird or unnatural; seeing that those creatures aren't even supposed to be 'natural'. But breasts are always rather noticeable, and you have yourself pointed out or commented about this fact many times, so I believe that without your recently told opinions nobody would have guessed it obscene commenting about them. My apologizes if I offended you in any way.

:

Hmm, I'm not sure if that was what I meant.. but how cool. I like his fingers.

Aw, Kyara's glasses are pretty.

tentacle_orgy 04-05-2006 02:52 PM

:

Actra's friend, Lyddea, would be a perfect example. Her current diet of New RuptureFarms products caused her breasts to grow out so much that it makes it almost impossible for her to fly until her wing muscles adjust to the weight (which could take anywhere between a few months to a few years).

Is it gross that I'm turned on by this?

edit:

:

You know I'm a sucker for a Noc with big knockers

Yes, I am being sarcastic...

:

Wow, I knew there was a reason your name was TENTACLE ORGY

Actually, that name came from a random name generator used for RPGs...I picked the first one that came up....

Bullet Magnet 04-10-2006 06:07 AM

Wow.. they're really good. How exactly do you colour them in? Or get them on the computer? Do you use a drawing tablet?

That's annoying. My Fanfic character is called Lockjaw. Or rather "The Lockjaw Kid". I always thought it meant rabies, but apparently it is the early stages of tetanus.

tentacle_orgy 04-17-2006 06:20 PM

I would like to say that I quite like your art, Dipstikk...The detail is quite honestly astounding...

Dipstikk 04-18-2006 01:08 AM

No problem, man. The anatomy on your creations is really cool. Where do you draw your inspiration from?
