You guys are not giving this guy a chance and saying he's not "right" for Oddworld. Well guess what? You're no better than Caste D. Raider (or whatever) when he didn't except Steef as one of them. You all should be ashamed for judging this guy. I for one am going to give him a chance to prove himself! ;) |
I doubt this is planned for next-gen consoles, I think it's pretty obvious (if this is real) it will be using the OSW engine (1st/3rd person gameplay). I think they could pop this out in a years time.
I agree people should give the character a chance before jumping to conclusions. |

ROFL!!! well im not judging him, i was just asking if he would fit in as a hero..of course im gonna give him a try and jumping to conclusions is for pansies ;) dang lol
|
Sure I'm giving him a chance, i'd love to play as this dude. Something just doesnt fit thats all. Looks more like Warhammer than Oddworld to me, but who knows. I'm sure i'll be proven wrong.
|
When I first saw that picture, "Gothic" sprung to mind, not Oddworld. While I'm sure this character will have many things going for him, in that drawing it looks like they got rid of the traditional Oddworld charm, which is the thing that has made me love Oddworld the most.
And Mojoman, the problem with the next Oddworld coming out in 2006 is that the Xbox Next is planned for Fall 2005. If it comes out for Xbox, the game will most likely be a dud, even if backwards capability is possible. I'm just worried for OWI's sake. |

This game looks like it has a bit of a scottish theme to it. Like:
- A kilt - traditionanly scottish poeple who where those skilts, were muscler and strong becuase it was hobbie trowing and lifting heavy objects. -Goats/ sheeps are in Scotland -High lands -Clowdy grey skys Proof me wrong if you must, but it has a connection. I realy like the cloths and such and very cool guns, but I don't like that he's some kind of cheeta creature. |
Just looked at his hat and it looks like some kind of razor blade that he's fit around his head.

here i my guesses and things i want:
he seems like a cross between a scotsman and a gladiator. the ship in the distance could by used by th vykers/glockons. those "sheep" have some goat in them. there will be more animals you have to look after for more effects (like live ammo). at least a little bit of humour and more darkness. it seems this game has a chance of being in the quintoligy even though he is tough. i don't think he would be able to run in those shoes. those stones on his kilt could be used as grave stones or pelting enimies. the brown sky suggests pollution is a problem or adds to darkness of the game. the game is probloably set somewhere other than modos as a metion of a new country. there are a few other obvious facts (i bet mine were too!) and i hope some of these come true (expecialy the different animal on, but i doupt it!). |
Okay, this is mine:
I really want to travel in Forested lands - like Paramonian Temple - not like Stranger Forests - because they are too normal. I want OLD Oddworld Style! |
:
I also doubt this will continue the quintology. I think Lorne's had enough of Abe. I couldn't agree more. On the contrary, he's broken out of those boots, so it looks like he should be very good on his feet... and his hands, perhaps both, if you know what I mean. |
:
Being dark does not equal to being gothic (and I know what I'm talking about) and we have to face it: Oddworld is changing it's still oddworld, but in a different way, not Abe anymore the poor little smuk Seems the big badass era has arise |
And I'm perfectly happy with that. I mean, controlling Abe and Munch in MO sucked really bad. I mean, I got NO satisfaction with it. That's why Stranger was so refreshing. I really hope this is the standard with their games as it's getting really fun to play.
|
but playing abe in 2D was awesomly fun too... I think
week hero = puzzles strong hero = action (that's why action with week characters wasn't as fun (MO)) OWI found out that actions was easier to do in 3D apparently that's why they are developping ceveral games in that way for the moment. |
MO on the PS2 sounded good, even with the puzzles. But of course it didn't make it.
|
the "previous MO" has more dealing with stealth and infiltration, you also needed to think way more then the final product.
It was more like the 2 first game, weak hero, nearlt no action, anly stealth and lots of thinking and refexion. |
"How do you get the idea of live ammo in this game?"
i did not mean that. i meant that the animals have different effects. e.g. a bird will transport you, fish will let you swim, electric aniamls zap enimies and the sheep can charge into enemies. these are just ezmaples but it would be cool if you could leed the aniamls to attack and stay, bring elements from muches oddesy and other puzzle elements. and maybe in the future (unlikely) oddworld will bring back games in 2d. |

Also, perhaps as a minigame with 2D side scrolling shoot and jump gameplay would be nice :) |

*OFF TOPIC*
well if you where on the forums for about an half year you schould now that difrent members are bisy with games... mostly 2D |
ok, i'm sorry if i am getting too exited conker tribe and i know the chance of being another official 2d game. i can't wait to play one by a fan though.
maybe the diesease altered his appearance and can't only mammels get rabbies. maybe the only decent mammal-like creature oddworld can make is a one that looks like a steef. i guess i shouldn't jump to conclusions just yet. |
:
As in stranger's wrath you had live ammo and each critter had different abilities, in this it would be the same effect. Instead of just critters that you can fire, these one's will protect you, defend for you, teleport you, increase your speed for you, heighten your amour protection, make you jump higher. But rather than just being really boring power ups that do that, there live critters that do it. Like Mudling says, birds that help you teleport. I mean this is just one idea: Cutterfly: A sort of small butterly type insect that has titanium like, sharp wings, that surround you, so when ever you walk into something, they rip it up into tiny shreds. And perhaps the only way of attracting these creatures would be to walk into sometype of honey like substance. Sure im getting caried away, its just me dreaming, but i can be imaginative if i want to be! lol |
that was a great idea elodie and what about an elum substituting for a horse? LOL
ok i think animals helping you would be a great system but seems too much like strangers wrath. i hope they do decide to have more than just " sheep" as fangus's "farm" animals though! one more thing, remeber how we called stranger steef? well this could be something like that as i have already said. fangustan+ equals the land of the fangus. fangus therefore is the name of his speacies. although fangustan could be named after him in the honour of saving his race, nation and basically the "goodies" of his land but i very much doupt it. |
:
I'm also wondering how the whole herding thing will actually work. I mean, how can you herd sheep when you're shooting invaders' heads off? It must be an automatic thing. Or perhaps, you can herd them by walking normally, but when trouble comes, you have to shoot the invaders off or else you have to buy more sheep... or something. What's the point of herding the sheep while he's defending his land? I mean, they should stay at home while he's out and that way they would be less colatoral damage to worry about. Whatever the gameplay elements, I'm sure it will work out great. I was skeptical at Stranger at first, having very little past experience with Oddworld games, but now I see the quality company that they are and I'm going to trust their judgement with this character and it's gameplay. |
well, maybe you would go something like abe did. e.g. hello sheep come to me, wait here, attack, run for your lives!
ok that was just an example and you would have to shoot your enimies. maybe the sheep keep fangus alive in booth spiritual, mental, verbal and physical. and maybe they are worth to the enimies or maybe rabies has kicked in so he has to bring them with him. who knows, but i trust oddworld to make a good game out of this. |
I hosted the picture in full size on TOGG:
http://www.oddworlduniverse.com/togg...A/OTFA0001.jpg just to let you know ;) |
Thanks a lot Xav. I appreciate it :)
|
thanks Xavier!
and now a new idea has pooped into my mind! what if what you do to these so- called "sheep" effects them. e.g. getting stronger, cathing dieses, breeding, fatting up, dieing of hunger, diese and thirst, changing forms, becoming angry and vicious ect. maybe you could use them to get wool to sell but i doupt it. it seems too happy and not dark enough. and i think winning the game will come in a result in saving fangustan and probilby dieing. this would eliminate sequals but i guess that is alright if they are not making a new engine for it. |
So what happens to EA? Will they dump OWI, or do they still own their part of OWI???
|
well i don't know but you know what we all hope T-nex! and guess what:
AO (GT) (AE was an extra game) ,MO (microsoft), ST (EA) and maybe F (magesco)! oddworld probibly have set a new record in publisher changes! |
:
Dipstikk you always say what im thinking. Yes this design doesnt look all that amazingly original, wow its a mammal, a land mammal at that. I think they need to bring different characteristics from other animals into their characters, reptiles, insects and even water mammals. The character and concept of a hearder is rather good and could develop. |

heheh...I think you are all too fast to go towards accepting this as a game.
I think this is just OW pulling our legs. I mean...that thing looks too much like Stranger, I belive this is just a mish mash of rejected art, and maybe art for a new project, pulled together right in time for april fools. I am even starting to belive it is a prototype Stranger. I mean...do you remember how the idea for stranger came from a concept artist who wanted to make a darker game for oddworld, and that he convinced Lorne to do it? This piece looks just like the perfect "missing link" to fill that place to me. I mean, you are a concept artist, you want to convince lorne that oddworld's darkside deserves a separate game, I think the perfect language for you to do that would be a concept piece, and this concept piece expresses the need for darkness while mixing it with oddworldity well enough to convince Lorne, but exagerated enough that he'd tone it down, and add more social messages into him, including the whole "no guns" twist. In creature developing process, I belive there always is a point when one of the artists for some reason comes to a point where they find the core of the character, that picture that expresses all the coolness of the character, all the dinamicy of it in one image, but of course, since the character wont be a still image, but videogame character who has body language, signature abilities, multiple moods, multiple angles, a voice, and most importantly an enviroment to interact with; the concept artists have to modify the character to work well in all these aspects, specially the last, since the Oddworld universe is so well built, and so custom tailored to reflect our flaws. I now am in denial to any other posiblity than an april fools joke. I think it would be pretty lame of OWI to accept something so reminiscent of their last hero for the new one. I mean, look at the history, first you have Abe(Completly unseen), then you have Munch (NO reasemblance) then Stranger(NO reasemblance) and then Fangus(last one on steroids). it's too much, I seriously hope OWI wouldnt fall into such cheapness. That said, this guy obviously looks awesome, but I just dont think there is room for a MAIN character that looks so much like Stranger, I think I remember an interview about the making process of Munch, and I belive Lorne was pretty emphatic on communicating a completly separate look, so I dont think ONE new game would make him change so radically, so as to take so much of the basic reasemblance for the new char. |
:
You made a new section for fangus:) thats cool:) Thanks Xavier, Tim H C |
Maybe this is is an April fools joke. The violence of it doesn't really fit to Oddworld's messages.
BUT, on the other hand, I think OWI is passionate enough to create something astonishing with a character like that. In a way, we could see some Hulk characteristics in there, and I don't think Hulk is a stupid comics using violence for the sake of it. Because if you look at the sheeps, it seems somebody is attacking (the guns still smoking are also showing that). That could be the expression of a man that can be very normal and tender with life, but very upset by... let's say... a big company wanting him to produce more, or to kill his sheeps. So let's just imagine they really have a plan behind that art. I'd say I know Sherry and Lorne's commitment to their own values would not change easily. So the scenario could be very interesting and even more challenging for the player. Also, always keep in mind that OWI is not a studio that likes Good or Evil solutions. Their games usually try to go beyond the simple Godd vs Evil, and in a way, a character like Fangus would be VERY interesting. It could also be some kind of a "trap" for players who are very appealed by violence. Because one should be honest : Oddworld games usually work on people who already agree with the ideas seen in the game. And I see Oddworld games as militant games, which means they should also be played by people not really keen on having humanist and ecological messages in their game. Then, at this point I must say I'm very curious to see such a game made in OWI, and I hope this is not an April fools joke. Because it could be very promising. |
