Trying telling the smoking population to kick their habit for global warming.

:

4. If nothing works... Someone had a strange idea... He said we should:
- Every year make a giant frozen cube (You know - frozen water)
- With very strong helicopter pick up the cube
- And throw it into the ocean. He thinks that would help but who knows...
You don't know how tempted I've been to say this, as bullshit as it is.

Bullet Magnet 01-26-2008 08:33 PM

The debilitating issues of that "plan" should be immediately obvious to anyone who has actually stopped to think it through for five seconds. As SM says, bullshit.

Yesterday I was on a mountain; a low mountain but near a very high and snow mountain. The distance was a few kilometres. And at about 3 P.m. the temperature was 13,5 °C. Now tell me if it wasn't an effect of global warming. I hate seeing snow melt on mountains. And I think yesterday snow was melting.

Wil 01-27-2008 04:07 AM

There’s nothing wrong with snow melting. It’s when a glacier’s rate of ablation exceeds its accumulation of glacial ice that we should worry.

Putting a huge ice cub in the ocean would be disasterous. All that freshwater melting into the oceans would weaken the thermohaline circulation ever faster than current glacial melt does. Might up the planet’s albedo, though. Forgive me, I’m being examined on all this is a few hours.

I really want to agree. But I don't know where you live and I don't nkow whic glacers you see. Alps's glacers are smaller than once. Too much smaller than once. In my next posts here I will attach some pics of major glacers of the world. Some disappeared. Some are going to disappear.

The alps have been around for say, hmmm at least 1000 years more than you? And in that time the glacers have been and gone many times. (so I don't think its because of global warming)

Try closer to a million.

AlienMagi 01-27-2008 07:26 AM

I apologise but why are we even talking about all this?
I don't think we can solve the problem...

If ignorance is the root of all evil then apathy is surely the oil for the cogs.

We are the human race. If we must go down we go down fighting.

Bullet Magnet 01-27-2008 08:03 AM

AlienMagi, how does your defeatist attitude work out in the long run? Just curious.

I don't think you can say it. I don't think you saw what I really saw.

Sorry Bullet Magnet... I didn't get your point.
Oh and please next time PM me for questions like that.

Wings of Fire 01-27-2008 09:40 AM

He means that constant pessimism will only get us further into this mess.

If we can't be prepared to try new things we'll never get out of the hole we've dug for ourselves.

AlienMagi 01-27-2008 09:52 AM

Oh Okay... So you are right but we shouldn't just talk about it.
We should do something... but what?
My point: Lets think of what we could do to slow global warming down.

We must stop polluting the atmosphere. But now in the world there too much inequalities of the countries. Poor countries cannot afford newest kind of technologies that do not pollute (filters, ecological engines and fuels...). So, the first point is to wait until poor countries will be as rich as others. And then a global discussion about global warming can be started for everyone. Another problem are wars. I think it is realated to the previous. But the very big problem is: have we time to wait?

We must stop polluting the atmosphere.

Yeah but how are we gonna stop that.
(that's what I meant)

Have you been reading this thread from the start?

Really?

Really really?

Really really really?

Read closer then.

AlienMagi 01-27-2008 11:45 AM

What is your problem wings?
Anyway I didn't read whole thread!

He doesn't need new problem, Wings of Fire.
AlienMagi, you can find everything you need in the thread. Anyway we will tell you it.

That is my problem Mr Martain Manhunter sir. The problem of how to slow down or stop/reverse global warming is the one we have been debating since the beginning of this thread. You don't really think the thread was made to just bloody talk about the effects did you?

Then you are a bad member. Always read a thread before replying if you don't want to look like a drooling moron

Don't defend him, Wings of Fire was perfectly correct in his argument.

Good. You're starting to wind me up and you've only been back 10 posts.

Sticker 01-29-2008 08:07 AM

Awesome my first post!! Let me just say ahead im a specialist in this area, for as far as that goes for a 16 year old student. I've seen An Incovenient Truth, which is a lecture given by Al Gore. It's shocking, terrible and something has to be done. All manner of natural glaciers are vanishing and water levels are rising. Several billions of dollars are spent every year, which could have been spent on cool stuff like a cheaper economy (sweets háve to get cheaper!), so I intend to change it, when I grow up. if i ever do XD.

abe is now! 01-29-2008 08:55 AM

Ok, Sticker. Thank you for posting here. Now I want to attach some images of glacers. Very big glacers. But I want to show you with these photos, what is going on on glacers. In the images that I will post, there are two photos: one of about 70 years ago near a photo of a few years ago. The first I want to show you is of Adamello-Mandron Glacer. It was enormous. Now it does not exist.

Sticker 01-30-2008 09:18 AM

That was on the Al Gore slideshow to!! How did you get that? But anyhow, your right and ladies and gentleglocks ^^ this is just the tip of the iceberg... oooops wrong metaphor. There are loads of exampels, but this is by far the most touching:

Watch it and cry for it.

Sticker 01-31-2008 11:40 AM

*sighs* It's real sad aint it? Anyhow, I intend to really do something about this, and I mean that (ladies and gentlemen, savor this moment. I'm serious!). Oh and btw, Abe is now I love your signature can i plllllz use it? *cute puppyeyes*.

abe is now! 01-31-2008 11:48 AM

A new image about glacers melting. This is Kilimangiaro's glacer from 1993 to 2000.

Anyway I sent you a PM for my sig, Sticker.

Sticker 02-01-2008 01:06 PM

And there so many solutions!! Geothermal energy, weight of water, tidal energy, solar energy, biomass, kinetic energy usage. And im just an noob in this field, experts have loads of ideas. if only that could go public huh? But anyhow, my intention is to become a famous writer some day and then start giving monthly lectures.

Bullet Magnet 02-01-2008 03:48 PM

There are no miracle solutions. While it is true that there are human oppositions and apathy hindering progress, they have more than their fair share of issues that have prevented their widespread execution.
