SpAM_CAN 06-07-2012 03:03 PM

They tended to be very tough discs, but I kept taking them to breakfast/after school club to play with on their PS1, and they'd get damaged in transit. I'd monopolise it on AO (so much so that they went and got a second PS1 xD). I remember we spent the whole evening doing the Paramonian Nest only to get to the Big Face Abe Portal area at the end only to miss the fucking portal and fly off the edge.

We were not amused.

Nepsotic 06-07-2012 03:16 PM

When PS1 discs got scratched to fuck they still worked. They were durable as hell.

STM 06-07-2012 03:19 PM

Yeah, the condition my PS1 copy of AO is in...if that was a PS3 or XBOX360 disk, it wouldn't work, it just wouldn't. The only problem with AO is sometimes it won't remember saves from my memory card.

SpAM_CAN 06-07-2012 03:25 PM

It was disc 2 of AE that died every time, because I love playing through Bonewerks and Slig Barracks that much (I used to HATE and totally skip the Trials with a level skip code)

Nepsotic 06-07-2012 04:01 PM

Bonewerkz and Slig Barracks are horrible parts of the game.

Mr. Bungle 06-07-2012 04:41 PM

Are you kidding? Those are two of my favourite parts. Much better than the fucking vaults.

Nepsotic 06-07-2012 04:47 PM

Slig Barracks was incredibly fustrating,.and Bonewerkz was just boring. It also creeped me out. It had bad vibes.

Sekto Springs 06-07-2012 05:20 PM

I agree with Bungle. The vaults were just the same level.
I loved Bonewerkz and Slig Barracks, though I'm not averse to perhaps changing the color schemes a bit. Both of them were green, and I think I eventually tired of looking at that much green.

Mr. Bungle 06-07-2012 06:28 PM

I found Bonewerkz was more greyish and light brown, with maybe a smidge of green. Kind of the color of bones or bonemeal, which I always thought was a really nice touch.

And the green in Slig Barrack's always had a military feel, which, along with the music, created a very oppressive, militiant atmosphere.

The vaults were just boring chambers, especially the Scrab vault. Yawn.

Although, I do still enjoy playing through them (to an extent) because the puzzles were so great.

EDIT: Dammit now I wanna play AE again. But I don't wanna go through the fucking mines. Ugh. Necrum.

Sekto Springs 06-07-2012 06:32 PM

There is a level select code, you know.

Hazz-JB 06-07-2012 06:36 PM

Slig Barracks was one of the best parts of either game in level design and atmosphere, I must say. Getting past an actual army of Sligs, infiltrating a Glukkon's office and possessing him really conveyed how insane and impossible Abe's quest was, more than anything else in the games IMO.

SpAM_CAN 06-08-2012 12:41 AM

These days I appreciate the Vaults way more, but when I was 10 I found them incredibly annoying.

Scrabaniac 06-08-2012 01:14 AM

Talking of level select codes, will AbeHD have any codes? I kind of liked the fact that there was no invincibility cheat. Abe's exoddus had a less serious feel to it because you had the option to cheat death.

Phylum 06-08-2012 01:17 AM

The age of cheat codes has since past. I think they're best omitted.

SpAM_CAN 06-08-2012 01:18 AM

O ^ [] X DOWN DOWN DOWN O ^ [] X

Its more memorable than the Konami code for me, its the only way I managed to see much of Exoddus as a little kid.

xXxrenhoekxXx 06-08-2012 01:46 AM

41 - 50
new ending (it was all a dream with horrid kids in reality),
unlock possession of sligs in mosaic lines,
remove early secret areas until the return to rupture farms (I do not agree),
(after a flame war),
change sign saying "if you escape all 28 mudokens will die",
have unsavable muds in rupture farms (become savable in the return),
have a currently in zulag board,
get rid of no return doors,
unlock-able stages / dlc (go back to previous areas),
have bird portal practice (have abe fail 3 times before getting the hang of it),
have cages containing the so called trapped paramites and scrabs in cages open in the ending,
chanting back story,
change
Overly obscure solutions to puzzles
Easily skipped puzzles
Tedious Whistling
Slog Stampedes (the ones who spawn DEFINATLY CHANGE THIS K THX BUI),
weapons (like slingshots (because sligs don't count))
kinect compatibility...
more control over shrykull
have mudokens in background instead of glukkons if you have bad quarma
(after more mlp controversy)
shredded pony meat as food in rf
have ocarina of time style whistling
tf2 promo hats and hats for elum and abe
remove star and the bird sound when abe gets K.O'd
rupture farms backstory
make the orbs static and the drones mobile
abe scratching his but
a demo just before release
paramite and scrab in the same screen
customisable controls
achievement for possessing the very first slig (I think he means the secret area.)

sorry I couldn't do the whole thing but OH MY GOD there's so many suggestions.

any way I'ma go do a remake of oddworld in adventurecraft (it's a minecraft mod) now... And never finish it.

Sekto Springs 06-08-2012 02:09 AM

Man you guys are wussies. It took me like half an hour tops. :p

unlock possession of sligs in mosaic lines,

So how do you propose we do some of the secret areas in Rupturefarms that require possession?

Heck even one of the normal areas requires you to possess a slig to rescue a mudokon.

Nepsotic 06-08-2012 02:17 AM

We're not discussing them now, I don't think.

Jordan 06-08-2012 02:19 AM

There wasn't really a part I particularly hated in Abe's Exoddus, it was all consistently good for me. I'd say Bonewerkz and Slig Barracks were my favourite parts though, mostly because of the atmosphere and the background images. I'll still never forget the part in Bonewerkz with the platform in the middle of the screen with the giant pile of sand/bone dust in the background.

xXxrenhoekxXx 06-08-2012 02:58 AM

hey I didn't make the suggestions I just listed the ones so far.

Nate 06-08-2012 04:38 AM

I will remind all members that this is a thread for suggesting ideas for Abe HD. It is not a thread for discussing AO or AE in general. If you want to discuss your favourite bits of the games, go make a seperate thread.

Scrabaniac 06-08-2012 06:44 AM

I saw on a MOD of Abe's oddysee that at the stockyards, in stead of a floating mine being released when the alarms were set off, slogs were released. I think Abe HD should have a sloghut in the stockyards like the MOD. This way it ensures that you can't dodge it, the slogs can come from both sides of the screen and kill Abe.

But if you're good at timing you can just hop over them (which I thought was part of gameplay). Sure the guy in the video pretty much allows the scrab to knock him over from the mine blast but I thought hopping over slogs/jumping over them was always a valid strategy.

SpAM_CAN 06-08-2012 07:27 AM

Its gotten to the point now where we've given enough ideas, and we are just gonna keep going over specifics that JAW are probably going to figure out for themselves. We gotta stop being backseat developers for now and let JAW get on with their job :3

Sekto Springs 06-08-2012 09:24 AM

Yeah, can we just like... close this? Or at least make a new thread or sticky of the suggested ideas for JAW as a go-to guide? I think at this point, it's safe to assume that if JAW wanted our opinion on a specific element of the game, they could ask. We've given them enough suggestions for now.

JennyGenesis 06-08-2012 10:24 AM

To me it just feels like people are complaining or making suggestions for stupid things just in case it makes it into Abe HD they can have their 15 minutes of fame for it...

Community input is great, only if the idea is great, like when Blur was in development, I did recommend they include the Ford Supervan 3, which they did, however they did not take my suggestion of including the Lincoln Town Car.

If I remember rightly, weren't some of the guns used in Army of Two: the 40th Day ideas suggested by the community?

SpAM_CAN 06-08-2012 10:29 AM

We should summarise the rest of the thread first, then close it.

xXxrenhoekxXx 06-08-2012 05:51 PM

my one suggestion is that in the future build a time machine and release the game now :P

SpAM_CAN 06-09-2012 04:49 AM

But then the game will never get made, thus not being able to be sent back in time, thus creating a universe-shattering paradox.

crimsonxking 06-09-2012 09:32 PM

So apparently this doesn't exist anymore and is instead being turned into a complete remake from the ground up, that's being treated as a reboot?
http://www.destructoid.com/abe-s-odd...h-229231.phtml

I'm hoping we can get actual details on this soon. Does this mean reboot from the point of view that this remake is going to start a new canon? Or is this just something pertaining to this game only?

Sekto Springs 06-09-2012 09:36 PM

It's been a complete redux from the beginning. This isn't really news.

crimsonxking 06-09-2012 09:41 PM

I was under the impression that it started as a HD version, then they decided to change aspects of it (such as scrolling camera and major changes to reflect that), and now if Destructoid and the facebook quote it references are to be believed, it is now being redone from the scratch up.

I did just now see that this has been covered here already, though. I originally went back only two days in this thread, thinking that was when this news hit, then saw Destructoid was rather late, and went back more days to see the posts here about it. So I get that it's not changing canon or rebooting anything in terms of the franchise/series.

But there still seems to be a sense of ambiguity elsewhere on the internet about if the part about the original plans being scrapped and the game being reworked from the ground up is true.

SpAM_CAN 06-09-2012 11:54 PM

It would be nigh on impossible to do an HD version of the old games due to the old engine and the fact that all of the backgrounds are pre-rendered and thus would need rendering again (and I doubt that the 3D models are still anywhere on the systems or compatible with recent modelling tools)

Wil 06-10-2012 12:04 AM

We've been saying it's a completely new project built from the ground up for the last two years. That's. Not. News. The actual news is that it's Abe's Oddysee, not any of the other alternatives we were considering.

We do still have the 3D character models from the original game, but they're NURBS and not suitable for realtime.

DarkHoodness 06-10-2012 01:37 AM

I wonder why people are oblivious to information that's both publicly available and painfully obvious? Maybe you should make a few official statements with clear, basic wording so that nobody has an excuse to misunderstand anymore.

It's probably not about the clear, basic wording, but rather about finding a way to get the message out to every single interested party and not leave anyone behind.

Scrabaniac 06-10-2012 06:05 AM

So is this thread being closed? Also, whats a sticky?

Michael 06-10-2012 07:21 AM

This confusion is because there are three groups of Oddworld fans; the forums, the Facebook crowd, and the casual fans who find out about Abe HD when it's reported on sites like Destructoid.

In general, I get the impression the Facebook fans don't have a clue. Even when something's directly stated by OWI, a lot of people get their info from other people's comments and end up being completely wrong. How many times did OWI need to repeat themselves over the whole 'not on XBox' thing?

Third party reports on the new games are no better than Chinese whispers (I wonder sometimes if the information they post has been sourced from the Facebook fans themselves). Not only does it come months after we hear about it on the forums, but it often has glaring inaccuracies or pulls 'facts' out of thin air.

With different sites reporting different (sometimes contradicting) information, people don't know where to turn. It should be obvious to go straight to the official OWI source on Facebook, but as we saw earlier this week even that can be confusing!

I wonder if OWI on Facebook could clarify everything by directing people to posts on this forum? We've got all the info they need. The only downside could be a surge in annoying new members who have just a casual interest at best- but who knows, the more the merrier and whatnot :p

Sekto Springs 06-10-2012 09:27 AM

Are the mods going to actually make a new thread or they going to continue being lazy cunts?
