In less than 2 days of using Paul's Map Editor, I already made 5 scenes for my map. I had a few issues though that were time consuming (getting the grenade machine to work and having to rebuild the map after accidentally overwriting it... x.x) But all is good now and here's a video! :D

All of the levels and background props were made by myself in Photoshop. It takes a while to do this but it's worth it in the long run!

that looks nice!,cant wait to play it ;)

MeechMunchie 01-07-2011 07:16 AM

I was thinking vaguely about making SligStorm when the editor is a bit more polished. You'd posess the slig as Abe at the start of the game, but from then on it would all be Slig-based puzzles and action.

Scraby 01-07-2011 09:08 AM

yeah,i planned to do the similar, but till the bnds or bans or whatever need to open the textures,i was thinking of making abe as a slig a white one

BlackVenom 01-07-2011 09:19 PM

I got a suggestion for the editor. When placing collision paths becomes available, how about a collision path drawer? something that allows you to draw a connecting set of collision paths because I saw some collision paths for certain objects (like moving bombs and bats) and it would be a lot easier to be able to do this instead of placing collision paths one at a time.

NovaMan 01-08-2011 01:38 AM

One more feature.
The electric walls should be able to follow a collision path, bouncing loop or not.
Any static object should be able to follow a collision path. Like a flying slig for example.

You mean, painting collisions when holding left click button.
And then it's automatically quantized to the grid?

And sorry for double posting.

That is AMAZING! It looks like OWI made the background themselves, seriously. :D

The only nitpick I have is that the shadow areas look a bit too dark, and you can't even see Abe in some of them I noticed, which makes it hard to know where there are unpassable walls and such.
But that might be the video doing that, you know it better since you've actually created and played the level.

Also, I meant to ask... are there any online tutorials available anywhere that teaches you to do those awesome "3D" backgrounds with platforms and shit in Photoshop?

About painting them, not exactly like that. But I meant, Click at Point A, then click point B, C, D, E and then click near point A again to complete a loop or right click to finish.

Also, moving electric gates would be impossible. It's got to be hardcoded get that moving. Moving bombs, Flying sligs, Bats, Bonesaws, ect... Are already hardcoded to move. It'd be an extraordinarily difficult thing to do to basically reprogram the electric gate to be able to move.

Thanks mate! :D
The video quality is poor as I stated and you can actually just see abe and I also fixed that ledge in scene 2 that you could barely see. I lit it up a bit more so it's more visable.

[EDIT]

Also, no. There are no tutorials that I know of. I just taught myself over a couple years of experience with photoshop. I intend to make it look even better later on but that's just a basic idea of what I'm aiming for in that scene basically.

Crashpunk 01-08-2011 03:24 AM

I would love to make my own levels only if the lvl. edittor was easier to use and understand.

Scraby 01-08-2011 03:38 AM

well it is quite easy,i managed to teatch few guys how to work with it,if you want i might teatch you on how to do the basics

It's actually quite easy as it is now but I've had lots of experience with many various level editors before so I can't say it'll be easy for everyone.

This is probably the most basic paul can bring it down to right now without making it restrictive.

Also, love ya crazy oddworld vids. "This is repture farms" *kicks* xD

Also, moving electric gates would be impossible.

Then i will never use Pauls editor:fuzmad:

My plan was that abe should be chased by a deadly electric wall and a scary music should be played at the same time. It will feel Science Fiction if possible.

Then this feature:

That makes absolutely no sense at all. Zooming with the scroll bars? I'd prefer to leave them how they are and have the mouse wheel for zooming...

Zooming with the scroll bars?

Yes. It's a workflow improvement you know.

have the mouse wheel for zooming.

I prefer both.

Wil 01-08-2011 07:48 AM

A workflow improvement to use the scrollbars for zooming? Then how do you scroll?

SligValet 01-08-2011 08:09 AM

Having moving electric walls would probably make the game crash.
And zooming with the scrollbars doesn't really work well for those who don't have wheels on their mice :p
But some sortof shortcut for the zooming in or zooming out WOULD be nice aslong as it doesn't replace anything existing.
Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V shortcuts for Copying and Pasting too please :)

Scraby 01-08-2011 08:11 AM

there is a zoom in and zoom out buttons, search for them

We know that.

oh missunderstood how about + -

Jango 01-08-2011 08:33 AM

Guys...all of your levels look really really good. They are actually really amazing. :)

But what's the point in just posting videos of the levels? You should upload the .lvl files for the levels straight onto my 'Level variations thread' (there's a link straight to it in my signature) so that we call all enjoy the levels and give you proper feedback. :)

Thanks very much.

Only paul can prevent the game crashes?

:

()
how do you scroll?

The edges on the scroll bars.

Jango 01-08-2011 12:47 PM

Just please, when you make a variation, upload it onto my thread (link in my signature) so that we can all enjoy it fully and give you feedback. It isn't difficult. :)

Maybe only after Paul has made a new version.

Phylum 01-08-2011 01:18 PM

Jango, these are previews of the levels.

When they're finished they'll go in your thread. Please be patient.

Jango 01-08-2011 01:21 PM

Some good CAM images here!

I'm sorry, I didn't realise that they hadn't finished them yet. I hope this makes up for it: :)

I have images from RuptureFarms that can be used in the editor's CAM files. I have all the signs, symbols and sprites in one map pack. In the other two I have useful background images. You may need to change the sizes etc. to make them look good.

IMPORTANT! MAKE SURE THAT YOU SAVE THESE FILES AS '.bmp' ONLY! DON'T SAVE IT AS ANY OTHER FILE TYPE, OR IT WILL RUIN THE IMAGES.

Here they are:

You know you have an old computer when your mouse doesn't have a wheel on it... xD

Not bad sprite ripping but I'll stick to photoshopping all my stuff like I currently have.

Look, here's the difference between my grenade machine and the one you ripped Jango. :D

I think it would be pretty awesome if people started rendering their own versions of little devices and such for .CAM editing, giving them to people, and letting them slap these onto wherever they want :D

You could have whole new things that aren't geometrically shaped like the original ones I mean.
