One thing I liked about the oddworld game was the way it didn't talk down to me- the chars looked like real beings instead of plastic dolls or cartoon characters.
I heard Lorne said we 'weren't supposed' to like those chicken things-Does that mean they're villains? How about those salamanders? I feel they don't quite fit. Kind of like an episode of Star Trek where they beam down and find a civilization of fat purple reptilians that sing "I love you, You love me". I would think OWI would realize that having a really cool character bump into Foghorn Leghorn or some of Elmo's schoolmates could torpedo the game. And Lorne said something about not liking how 'cartoony' that MO turned out to be? Maybe OWI's throwing some of that stuff out to mess with our heads? |
If you guys are worried from the download that its too short I will tell you why it is. The entire program with commercials etc is an hour long. On the other hand, the streaming windows media player you can download has all the commercials edited out so it only totals a bit over forty minutes, be sure to watch the whole thing so you dont miss any of the oddworld stuff they show again after a couple times going between games.
I allready saw the DC full version on tv yesterday and taped it. But I must say as I have stated many times the footage from the streaming version is still pretty good, and will help those who havent had the chance to see the whole show yet. |
sorry Al, but where can I find it? I didn't understand that
edit, okay I found thak you very much |
i just wanted to say thanks to oddipus for the discovery link. thanks. i know a lot of people dont seem to like the salamander creatures but i think they're cool as well as a little funny!! all the characters look great but i'm going to miss abe and munch. just have to wait for the game after.
|
I hope the salamanders are like the chickens, not intended to be liked by the fans :fuzwink:
|
:
The salamanders look like they were made by a kid. They just look like green, squirming tubes with eyes. |
maybe made by Lorne's son :fuzwink:
anyway I have to know what they are supposed to do to give a judgement |
Is it just me?
Am I the only one out there that really doesn't like the new direction of the new Oddworld? The new character just doesn't seem to fit, nor does the genre (western?). There's something about Abe and Munch that "make" OW and the new half/half character doesn't seem to work. They are pushing it. Going for too much. Seems they've even taken away the puzzle aspect of the game based on what I could get from the X-Factor. Looks like a first-personal shooter now. Undermines the integrity of the game and what it was in the past. Give me Munch and Abe!
|
well Oddworld like new stuff, they are trying new stuff... I can understand that, they are actually not very happy about MO
|
I respect your opinion. Although, I must add that OW4 is not first person shooter. It is still almost all third person except, for the times when you are using the crossbow, very much like splinter cell and zelda ocarina of time in that way. But everything else in OW4 is like munch in the way of third person. Also, dont worry about munch and abe, they will probably return after this game. They just needed a much deserved vacation for a while, that doesnt mean they are gone forever.
To end on, OWI also stated if you read the official site, that they will not comment on wheter they have changed direction from those initial concepts, if you read further back in this thread, those were from last september. In that amount of time we dont know how much the game may have changed in direction, or wheter it has. We will all just have to wait. Also welcome to the forums eponine, I hope you enjoy your stay. |
About the Western theme, I don't think there's anything wrong with drawing off of that kind of material. After all, almost all of the second half of Abe's Exoddus had a very strong 19th Century look to it, not only in environment and character design, but the whole MOM News and other stuff I'd probably missed. A lot of the promotional material for Munch's Oddysee had that 1950s American feel to it, in particular the 'Passport to Oddworld'. So giving Oddworld 4 a Western quality I don't see as a problem, but I see exactly where you're coming from.
As for character design, I completely agree with you - although I think plenty of what I've seen is good, none of it has the same Oddworld quality as most of what was included in the other games. After all, even the ring pulls in Abe's Oddysee were distinctly designed, but now a lot of the characters have practically no originality at all, most noticeably the salamanders and the blob creature. Personally, I'm willing to live with it for OW4, since the best production designers have actually left OWI. |
they maybe don't have the same oddworld touch because Farzad left... he had some awesome drawings and idees
|
That's what I just said in my last sentance.
|
Hey Xav or Max. Do you guys know where I can find the really old designer diaries for MO?
There is only one left on Gamespot. But they were still available when it was known as videogames.com. I figured I would ask because there was some information I was looking for in one of the particlar diaries. If not thats ok, no harm in asking though. Edit: I know you probably know this, but they are the designer diaries by paul o'connor. |
i just watched the Xfactor show, and i hardly understand english, but i thought that the issue for each team was to handle release their game for next december??? does that mean that OW4 is for this christmas or did i completly misunderstand???
and are we sure that steef's game is out of the quintologie?? |
Yes, Oddworld 4 is not part of the quintology, but instead runs concurrent to it. Al, you have to use the Internet Archive's archived version, although I may give you something nice.
|
Thanks a bunch Max. I never thought I would see those things again! I definately have to bookmark the site. Once again thanks for your help and putting the time in to help me out.
|
Heres something to think about. If Steef is concurrent with the quintology then will he even meet up with Abe and Munch? Or is he the beginning of a new series of Oddworld games like the quintology but happening at the same time of the quintology only the start of a new series of Oddworld? Like haveing two Oddworld series happening at the same time. Yes we will still see the rest of the quintology but at the same we will see this one start telling its tales. Intresting!
Paramiteabe...:fuzblink: |
How do you guys know it's not part of the quintology?
|
Lanning has said that the new game will not be part of the quintology. Plus squeeks oddysee is part three
|
Hmm... here's a cool idea, if you'll bare with me.
Let's say that no, Steef is not part of the quintology. How do they define that? I've always looked forward to the last installment of the quint, playing as five different characters at once with different abilities- Abe, Munch, Squeek... umm... Rex... I dunno, Stifle the Widget, whatever the hell OWI gives us. If he's not in the quintology, though, then Steef won't be in that merry band, which seems to make sense, being Clint Eastwood and all. But where does that leave him? A one-time character. Maybe not. What if Steef's story dealt with saving some people, doing some good deeds, etc and so forth... but there's a couple of scenes where he talks about those "filthy bug-eyed mudokons, always getting in the way" or something like that. And it all ends triumphantly, yeah yeah, he defeated the villain and walks off into the sunset... carrying two familiar wanted posters and a loaded crossbow. What if Steef was a hero now, but when the quintology returns he's a villain? All of a sudden, in the middle of some raid on a despotic farm of one kind or another, Abe is staring down the business end of a drawn bolt, Munch is hanging in a net somewhere, and you have a true first in an oddworld game- a boss fight. The level loads, and Munch is screaming in the background, explosions are going off, there's mines lining your path as some feral gun-slinger in a Crocadile dundee hat is jumping off the walls like a spiderman villain shooting nets at your ass while the scrolling LED's in the background chime in "Hey stupid! RUN FROM THE STEEF!!!" He's got a chant supresser on his belt, a hankering for that certainly high bounty on your mudokon head, and a personal problem with the race you're out to save. What a great and original plot device it would be! Remember playing Steef? HOW DO YOU LIKE HIM NOW THAT HE'S BLASTING YOUR GREEN BUTT!? Phew, venting. Whadda you think, folks, does it have potential? |
I actually like that idea a lot, its very original and would end up being very odd. But we must also factor in, that steef part way through the game may change his ways, and thats when he might give up bounty hunting and join in the fight against the industrialists. As I have said in the past it all depends on what happens and in the end what is decided. We will just have to wait and see what OWI has in store for us since the original concepts shown of OW4 recently.

Steef handles ' Crossbow'...
Steef handles ' Crossbow'...
--- Does the next GAME have the element of "First Person Shooting Game"(FPS).? Do you think about that? http://www6.plala.or.jp/atusiya/steef/fps.jpg By the way, does steef break a fart?. |
Re: Steef handles ' Crossbow'...
:
well there will be FPS only when he is aiming I suppose, like SplinterCell or Zelda |
yeh Dequibenzo i like the idea of Steef making an appearance in the quintology, and his interests clash with those of our band of unlikley heros and he's hunting them throughout the game, that would be great! I don't like the idea of having a boss fight though

Look at OWI's official FAQ. You can use Abe Babe's new topic. Don't bother looking at mine, it doesn't seem to be working. Actually no, if you could have a go and see if it's working, I'd be really grateful.
I hope Steef does not break a fart - it would be completely out of his apparent character. As for his involvement in the Quintology, I don't know. Do we even know for certain he's a 'goodie' in this game? |
Your FAQ doesn't work for me, too bad,
I'm sure even me could learn stuff from it |
It works for me, btw: site's looking great Max, keep it up. Mine should be finished quite soon aswell.
|
If it isn't part of the quint... I don't think they should call it Steef's Oddysee. But that's probably just me... I'm so obssesive about little things like that.
|
they never said they will call it Steef's Oddysee... actually the name is not known yet
|
Re: Re: Steef handles ' Crossbow'...

http://www6.plala.or.jp/atusiya/steef/steef13.jpg My imagination is filling with all sorts of possibilities...:) |
Re: Steef handles ' Crossbow'...
:
Maybe he cracks his knuckles... I could be wrong about this but Steef looks like the sort of character that would meet his bad game ending with a snarl rather than a lot of crying. Wouldn't quite fit to have him going "oops" either. Dequibenzo's idea about Steef returning as a villain is an interesting one- Many of the villains Abe has dealt with end up killed, tons of anomymous sligs but a few of the gluks had some personality (AE) even if you only saw them a short time So what does Abe end up having to do? Kill Steef?, lead him into a nest of big momma fleeches or something? Kind of a bummer if you've come to know and like Steef from a previous game... Or save his life and throw him into a quandry between honor and that bounty. Or maybe Steef keeps coming back all through the quintology after humiliating defeats, hunting our heros like Captain Ahab chasing the white whale... Ho boy, lots of possibilities here. How about finally Steef reveals that he's Abe's real father? (Sorrrryyy- I think I got too much sun today.) Ps. Anybody else notice which way that skunk is aiming? |
:
:
|
lol, that Skunk remindes me of that thing from the movie "IceAge"....you know the thing....Squrriel I think it was. Anyways I can imagine Steef putting the Skunk on the launch of the cross-bow and it shivering with one of its eye's twitching....yes..
